SORRY FOR LENGTH: Notch said distance traveled in the Nether = 8x distance on normal world. So if you build a portal 2 squares away from your first portal in the nether and enter it, the exit portal SHOULD appear something like 16 squares in front of your first portal.

Also, two portals in the real world can be close enough to go to the same place in the Nether... especially if they're less than 8 squares apart, or are at the same coordinates but above or below eachother.

I can relate :( a big ole wooden castle, before an up date i accently right click to close a door not realizing i had lava equipped which was unpoured and i was trapped and by the time i quickly tried to get it up, it allready stared to spread then bye bye castle which had water inside it but was not enough i spent for ever building it and now gone:(

I create barriers between my lava and wooden things... like a glass wall. I also don't put lava garbage disposals in my wooden houses though... for this very reason =/ GOOD LUCK THOUGH!
