Oh, these girls own New Who companions nine million ways to Sunday! (Don't get me wrong, I like New Who, but with the exceptions of Martha and Donna, the female companions have been disappointing)
Can you imagine what would have happened if Romana, Ace, Leela, Nyssa and Sarah Jane all teamed up? The evils of the universe wouldn't stand a chance!
you forgot jo grant--some people may disagree, but I think of her as a transitional companion--Jo Grant was the bridge between the screaming damsel-in-distresses of the sixties serials and the more independent, more action-oriented and more dimensional female heroes of these companions in this video.
In fact, I call her a damsel in action--a damsel who kicks ass! She may not have the personality of an action girl, but Jo is a major step up from the previous companions like Susan, Polly, and Victoria.
@harrietamidala1691 I agree, for the most part; however, it might be more accurate to say she was the female companion who was first given the most time to grow over time, in terms of on-screen time. Her 3 full seasons gave her time to go from being a relatively naive, weak-willed girl, to a more experienced, focused woman (her resisting the Master's hypnosis in season 10 was a real hallmark for her, as a character, as it showed just how far she had come since "Terror of the Autons").
@harrietamidala1691 Frankly, they all had their moments, beginning with Susan attacking a caveman to save her grandfather in "The Tribe of Gum." We also had Polly beating up a British soldier in "The Highlanders," Victoria saving the day with her screaming in "The Underwater Menace," and Zoe walloping the Karkus in "The Mind Robber."
Great. Personally I had the most resspect for Liz Shaw - 1 half scream in an entire season, Cambridge doctorate, capable of discussing complex issues with the 3rd Doctor, her other world alter ego shot the brigadier's other world ego and Caroline John was an experienced actor which showed.
@flashrobbie Agreed! I love my Ace and I love my Romana, but Liz Shaw was my first companion and one of the most interesting characters in Doctor Who history! It takes someone pretty awesome to THROW THEMSELVES OFF A BRIDGE to try and avoid capture. Don't get me wrong, Jo was a great companion, but I'd rather have had more of Liz!
Awesome. Both versions of Romana were great, but for some reason it was Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) who kept me awake at night as a young teenage boy. Memories...!
Oh so want to see this vid with Jamie included. For some reason that would make me lauh very hard. But then again I think all Doctor Who is better with Jamie McCrimmion <.<
yeah, I liked barbara, and vicki and zoe, and even dodo too--in fact, I think they were the only sixties female companions i like (the rest, like susan and polly, really annoy me with their screaming) which are your least favorite companions?
Awesome!

@MaskedMan66 Actually it was "Fury of the Deep" where Victoria's scream saved the day.

Actually one of them's Princess Astra but the Beeb didn't look very far afield when they needed a new Romana in the next story.

Ah of course! I'd forgotten that episode! Well, in my defence I only saw half of it. Thanks!

Oh, this is a great vid!! Love it. My only quibble is that it didn't have Barbara, the original kick-ass female character on the show.

Thanks, glad you like it!
Yes, I love Barbara too, but I couldn't include her or a few others because I didn't have enough clips! Maybe next time!
