I've had the Oregon Health Plan in the past, pretty much free health care for the extremely poor. I don't remember any DMV-like lines to stand in. My employer now pays for insurance, about $800 of the $950 premium per month. That's more than my monthly tax payments. Employers are struggling to pay for these benefits. Insurance is to blame, bring in the hammer! This is one big factor in our ailing economy.

The State offers medical assistance, food stamps, energy assistance, and such for those who have trouble. Unempowering people is not the answer. If people work and have the ability to pay for their health care/insurance good. It shouldn't be done away with due to people not doing so well being offended at someone else's success.
In my opinion the Government should look after the health care of the vets and their families first, those who receive Social Security, Disability, and those who receive State Assistance. It should be a temporary thing with the State Assistance to empower people to be able to do better for themselves. I am all for a hand up, but not coddling.

The State offers health care, and it's called welfare/medical assistance. They also offer Medicaid and Medicare. When the Government gets involved with anything it complicates matters, and always has. "Allowed to keep" their private insurance? If the Government offers medical assistance they can dictate what treatment a person gets or not. Employers are not obligated to give anyone insurance or benefits, but are generous when they do.
Unions have done good work in this area of obtaining good health care for workers. Unions are being busted however due to corporates finding better deals elsewhere. The days of corporates offering benefits and pensions are quickly leaving. People raised hell when mothers with children needed medical assistance, but now are in line to obtain it for themselves. People raised hell with the State over welfare costs.
Anyone who has had to file for food stamps or medical assistance knows about the waiting. I had a friend who had to wait 2 years to obtain Disability. If you need reminding of how the Government complicates things think about it when you are changing the unknown number of clocks in your house on Daylight Savings Time 2 x per year. The Government can do good things, but more often than not complicates things.
Obviously, Blunt hasn't been to a hospital or doctors office lately. BTW, I'd be pretty happy with a medical system that works as quickly, efficiently, and inexpensively as the post office.

Medicare is on the path to bankruptcy and many doctor won't accept medicaid patients because docs lose money on these patients. Private companies don't give a damn about public good. However, when greed (= private companies) is unregulated, greed will run amok and cause problems for all.

Under a unregulated free market, private companies -- driven by self-serving greed -- will find ways to screw everyone else to earn a buck. If you give private companies too much freedom to do whatever they want, they *WILL do whatever they want*.
Of course, that's the exact philosophy of Republicans and conservatives. It's either the government OR the private corporations that will screw us over: pick one.
Private companies are owned by investors who elect members to a board that oversees the financial managers. If there is foul play, the board members are under pressure by the share holders (who get screwed by fraud) to fire corrupt financial managers.
Also, corruption decreases the value of a company and the financial managers could lose their jobs should the company be taken over by someone who could run it more efficiently and thus increase the business's value.
Sure, if investors were so smart and almighty, why would they elect CEOs that earn hundred of million dollars in salaries and bonuses while the companies keep making losses and ultimately go bankrupt?
Just look at AIG and Citigroup -- it's the investors who elected their CEOs and presidents. Those CEOs sure have run their companies "efficiently."

I've had the Oregon Health Plan in the past, pretty much free health care for the extremely poor. I don't remember any DMV-like lines to stand in. My employer now pays for insurance, about $800 of the $950 premium per month. That's more than my monthly tax payments. Employers are struggling to pay for these benefits. Insurance is to blame, bring in the hammer! This is one big factor in our ailing economy.

Hi mockingarab. The insurance companies and pharmaceutical companines are not the enemy. They also are big employers. The State offers medical assistance, food stamps, energy assistance, and such for those who have trouble. Unempowering people is not the answer. If people work and have the ability to pay for their health care/insurance good. It shouldn't be done away with due to people not doing so well being offended at someone else's success.

In my opinion the Government should look after the health care of the vets and their families first, those who receive Social Security, Disability, and those who receive State Assistance. It should be a temporary thing with the State Assistance to empower people to be able to do better for themselves. I am all for a hand up, but not coddling.

The State offers health care, and it's called welfare/medical assistance. They also offer Medicaid and Medicare. When the Government gets involved with anything it complicates matters, and always has. "Allowed to keep" their private insurance? If the Government offers medical assistance they can dictate what treatment a person gets or not. Employers are not obligated to give anyone insurance or benefits, but are generous when they do.

Unions have done good work in this area of obtaining good health care for workers. Unions are being busted however due to corporates finding better deals elsewhere. The days of corporates offering benefits and pensions are quickly leaving. People raised hell when mothers with children needed medical assistance, but now are in line to obtain it for themselves. People raised hell with the State over welfare costs.

Anyone who has had to file for food stamps or medical assistance knows about the waiting. I had a friend who had to wait 2 years to obtain Disability. If you need reminding of how the Government complicates things think about it when you are changing the unknown number of clocks in your house on Daylight Savings Time 2 x per year. The Government can do good things, but more often than not complicates things.

Do you see the items for private medical insurance -- that is taken out from your paycheck before you even get your money?
They are no different from the healthcare tax. In many cases, those insurance items (for private medical care) cost much higher than what people in other countries are paying taxes for their healthcare.
In a way, we already ARE paying a tax for healthcare -- but we are paying it to PRIVATE companies instead of the government.

The private insurers are not perfect but it is better than government run systems. Medicare is on the path to bankruptcy and many doctor won't accept medicaid patients because docs lose money on these patients. Currently the private system is better than the failing government system. So why do we seek to expand the government system?

The fall of these companies was due to fraud and improperly labels hybrid securities. Instances of fraud go against a free market. Some private companies fell, but others remain. Its as though we did not put all our eggs in one basket. When the government runs everything and it fails - we're screwed.

The fall of those companies was due to GREED, which was the exact motivator behind private companies. Now, greed can be good -- but only to a certain extent. Private companies don't give a damn about public good. However, when greed (= private companies) is unregulated, greed will run amok and cause problems for all.
Obviously, private companies can't regulate themselves. We all know that our current state of trouble is caused by the LACK (i.e., loosening) of regulations.

Here's the truth that conservatives refuse to see:
Under a unregulated free market, private companies -- driven by self-serving greed -- will find ways to screw everyone else to earn a buck. If you give private companies too much freedom to do whatever they want, they *WILL do whatever they want*.
Of course, that's the exact philosophy of Republicans and conservatives. It's either the government OR the private corporations that will screw us over: pick one.

here's the reality:
Private companies are owned by investors who elect members to a board that oversees the financial managers. If there is foul play, the board members are under pressure by the share holders (who get screwed by fraud) to fire corrupt financial managers.
Also, corruption decreases the value of a company and the financial managers could lose their jobs should the company be taken over by someone who could run it more efficiently and thus increase the business's value.

Sure, if investors were so smart and almighty, why would they elect CEOs that earn hundred of million dollars in salaries and bonuses while the companies keep making losses and ultimately go bankrupt?
Just look at AIG and Citigroup -- it's the investors who elected their CEOs and presidents. Those CEOs sure have run their companies "efficiently."

The market is not going down now due to CEO salaries. CEO salaries, while larger than yours, represent such a miniscule portion of annual GDP that it is a non-issue.

While one may have good intentions such as working for the public good, the outcome may be disastrous if the operation is not profitable because it will ultimately collapse and be unable to provide any services at all.
The current state is not cause by lack of regulations per se, but by the lack of preventing fraud. Fraud is not part of the definition of a free market.

Now, a privatized security force could potentially better than a public one (i.e., the police force.) However, the police force remains to be a public, government-run system because that's the only way to guarantee that ALL citizens have equal access to security and protection.
Now, whether you believe healthcare should be private or public depends on whether you think everyone -- rich and *POOR* -- should have access to healthcare.

No, under a private healthcare system, "the poor" will hopefully quit spending money on cable, cell phones, and eating out all the time and then can afford health insurance. I know someone who "can't afford" the $50 a month health insurance premium for her plan but eats out every day. Parasites.

By your logic, we should be paying for privatized police force and fire department. If you're robbed and burglarized, then you will call the privatized police -- and pay a fee. If your house is on fire, then you will call the privatized fire department -- and pay a free. You should pay your own bill for your own crime and fire problems. Why should I pay for your crime/fire problems when I'm always careful and avoid troubles? It's not my fault when they are not careful and get robbed, right?

Hey, you pay for fire protection either way. Its either thru your taxes indirectly or through direct insurance payments. doing it directly through a private provider would be cheaper.

Hi azas1949. The current system is not failing - people are. As I have said before the State has always offered medical assistance, food stams and such. People are struggling due to changing and shifting circumstances. Employers are moving to places where the view of things, such as feelings expressed of entitlement being seen in many Americans, and work ethic are different. Americans are spoiled pure and simple.

And many Americans want something for nothing. Nothing in life is free. Someone has to pay for it. The Government does not have working income, but levies taxes, borrows money on assets. The Government creates work. It is not a corporate. I have learned that people do better when empowered to do that. Give someone a fish they will be back for another, but give them the tools/education to fish they will be able to provide for themselves.
