My Dad, who toured with Dudley Dale and his Gang of Boy Singers and Dancers back in the 40's used to sing this to me when I was a kid and it always made me laugh. Still does to this day. Wait until I let him know that Frank Crumit is on Utube! Thanks so very much for posting this. Dad never could remember all the verses! lol
Well - I have a copy of the original 78rpm record of Down in de Cane Break ("down by de mill, lives a little coloured gal the name of Nancy Dill, I told her that I loved her I loved her very long, I'm going to seranade her and this'll be my song"). Quoted from memory, and the fact that I used to play it on my guitar in my earlier years. Problem is that it will take me some effort to find it. If you are truly keen I'll make the effort to locate it (licensing laws considered of course) . Barry
My sister used to sing this to me when I was a little girl back in the 50's but now she doesn't remember it and no one else I've ever met does either. Thanks for posting this!
We had this on a 78 when I was a kid and I loved it. I was minded to look for it because I was telling my daughter how I went guising (trick or treating) in a black bin bag as a prune and sang this song. Well it always rains at Halloween in Scotland and I was fed up with wet wings! (as a fairy or angel)
No 1080p on this? ;D

That's a great song. It gives you an idea what children's songs were like, in the 1920s. :)

Strange how people can see "gay" in so many "normal " things these days, funny old world isn't it.

What a witty ditty.
Would you happen to have a version of "I Don't Want To Play In Your Yard"? Another classic is "Your Baby Has Gone Down The Plug-Hole".
5*****.
Thank you.

This has turned into a camp song, with many of the lyrics omitted, and I think it's amazing that this is the origin.
Thank you for posting this!
