the company doesn't need to pay hidden costs it externalizes onto the taxpayer. Pollution, not cleaning up spills like they should, lack of stability from using a fuel that is available only in concentrated places (many of which are held by folks that are basically warlords), protection of pipelines.

If everybody had a better grasp of all the work, thought, planning, and technology that goes into producing just one gallon of gasoline they would be thanking Exxon et al for the great bargain they are getting.
I hate how people without a clue about how gasoline is produced think they are in some kind of position to determine was is an honest price.
