Either way they evolved so far is more than simply worth listening. It does not matter if they make Doom-Like Metal, use Synthies and Darkwave-Influences or Drum Sequencers alongside their Drums. The result is extraordinary and always transports the intended feelings to the auditionship. They have been giants 15 years ago and they still are...!
When it comes to a word "evolution", my first thought is - Paradise Lost. It is so magnificent to see band progress in that kinda way but still possessing the true core of their identity.
@adiscloud on the subject of Depeche mode, have you liked any of their recent albums? I liked 'Sounds Of The Universe', can take or leave 'Playing The Angel', and thought 'Exciter' was one of their all time worst.
'Ultra' was the last one that really impressed me.
I don't wanna go against the flow here, but for me that album is too repetitive and monotonous, kinda 'Depeche Mode for the poor'. Nor do I like their latest releases. It's pretty obvious that 'Gothic' and 'Icon' will remain unsurpassed
I have several favorites from Host, but this is one of the true standouts in my opinion. This songs just soars in the chorus; it amazes me every time.
known about this band for a while, and just now starting to get into their music. Really wish I had invested in this CD some time ago. Now I gotta purchase it online. Great Song, Great Band!!! The lyrics go beyond the harmony of the guitar and bass and the rhythms of the drums... they make it that much better.
I'am Depeche Mode fan,Paradise Lost comes second in my preferences. Host is a beautiful experience where rock, melody and electornic music come together in an unique way. I appreaciate their courage of experimenting with music. And it's quite normal because they also appreciate Depeche Mode and it's normal to be influenced by them. Now, the latest album, you can experience a pure gothic rough experience.
@adiscloud I'm not sure about that. I remember an interview in Terrorizer magazine where Nick and Gregor said they hated being compared to Depeche Mode because they didn't lik ethem.
@lamentate07 to be sure of that you can search on Bravo Magazine, I think in 1993, there were some personal album charts of some major rock bands leaders. Among them there was Greg's personal top ten albums chart . His first favourite album was DMs Songs of Faith and Devotion. On their concert in Bucharest I even talked to Greg and Aaron about that and they confirmed they like DM. When I mentioned about Nick's deniyng that, you know what they answered? "Don't worry, Nick has all DM albums":-)
@adiscloud they were probably just denying it to the press to save face. You'd have to be mad to not hear the influences on O.second and Host, particularly Host.
@lamentate07 Well...It's enough to see all the cover tracks of DM songs...of great metall bands like Rammstein, Lacuna Coil ,Crematory, Moonspell, Marlyn Manson, Anathema, Him...etc etc. Anyway...I would like to see a DM cover by Paradise Lost :-)
@adiscloud yeah, but that came later. When Paradise Lost released 'One Second' in mid 97, there was barely any talk of Depeche Mode being an influence on metal that i remember. that's what was so 'shocking' about it, that a band that so many considered 'pansy shit' ended up becoming such a prominent influence for a while there.
@lamentate07 Yes, you're right...it was strange even for me as a DM fan. Anyway...it was easier for me to accept those major changes than a person who only listened to metal music. If we compare the album lost Paradise with Host we can easily say that it's the most drastic change of style any band had ever had. Indeed, there were times when rock fans and DM fans were against each other (childish of both), but after a while many DM fans became rockers, and many rockers came to appreciate DM.
@adiscloud yeah, there is still a degree of elitist/separatism in metal and rock and pop today, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was in the 80's or mid 90s. I think it was Mike DiSalvo(ex Cryptopsy) that said back in 2001 or so that in the past metal was concerned with keeping sub-genres separate, whereas the prevailing trend now is to cross elements over and create interesting hybrids. PL, as you said, went beyond that and moved straight into the world of pop.
@adiscloud So you don't like the more explosive albumes of paradise lost like Draconian Times, Gothic, Shades Of God or In Requiem? is one of my fav bands :)
@AALK5555 Ohh, but I didn't say that, I love those great albums, I just wanted to say that unlike some rockers that were dissapointed by Host, it was easier for me...as a Depeche Mode fan, to accept that major change in style, and at the same time to be more objective than others.:-)
i love everything from PL from Draconian Times until the album Paradise Lost host is one of may favorites from them check out year of summer this cold Life From One second and divided from, believe in nothing
I have the same feeling about megadeth's album called 'Risk'. If that had either been a side project or didn't have the megadeth name on the cover, it would have been loved...
i do agree with that..theyve gone electronic. but thats so nice...depeche mode is amazing! id rather have a softer tune with cleaner beats in my opinion when it comes to PL.
First Album I've ever bought in a LONNNNG time. But this song came up on my Pandora play list and I had to get this CD. I'm now a fan. I will be picking up their other CDs soon.
Maybe the best song on the album. Paradise Lost is maybe the most underrated band in the world....and that thing makes me very mad. I'm a Depeche Mode fan but they come second in my preferences...because no matter what...they keep doing great songs...and the variety of sounds we find on each album is to be apreciated, and not criticised as some do. Although the sound is different on each album.....an although I like some albums more tha others...we always fin quality on their work.
I´ll be headbanger to the end, I love almost any extreme type of metal there is, and I WORSHIP EVERY PARADISE LOST ALBUM OUT THERE, if there´s a band that knows how to explore different music styles is them. They´ve succeded every time, not falling for the greed or fame virus, they just do their own thing and pull it off so well...
I don't care what everyone says, they sound so much better when they do more alternative style, like this, as opposed to the heavy metal, and I like heavy metal. So it's weird.
Damn the nostalgia feels good. One of my all time favourite albums.

Having said that, even though i like their EMI albums, i can understand why they flopped. They just didn't cut it in that world imo.
I'd much rather listen to 'Host' than Lost Paradise though.

Is there any particular reason as to why this album (song for that matter) is not on iTunes? Every other cd of theirs is on there.

One Second, Host, Believe in Nothing & Symbol Of life are them ost interesting Paradise albums to me.
It's very ironic that when these albums came lout, so many Metalheads ccalled them 'poppy'.
Failling to understand these albums are actually strong influanced by numerous gothrock, darkwave en synthpop bands.
But you can actually blame the magazines a lot for that. As they stick to the rivallity between Metal and Wave from the 80ies. Blind to see that:
Metal + Dark Wave = Great Music
