Hot Box Cookies is pretty fucking sweet. I LOVED Tiger's Takeout so fucking much. We STILL don't have anything comparable to that here in St. Louis County (at least not in Ballwin, Manchester or Ellisville)! :(
The campus McDonald's was pretty awesome, a lifesaver. When the only other places to go for lunch were the shitty 'food court' in the Student Center (and the overpriced Brady Food Court BEFORE the NSC was built) and Wheatstone Bistro, I could get a lot of food for like $5 at McD's.
And it's not Columbia DOESN'T have all your other corporate and chain favorites- Domino's, Papa John's, Imo's, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Taco Bell, KFC, Best Buy, Walmart and so on. The mall's not too bad.
But I guess there IS a bit of truth to the statement that it's "just for young people." If you're middle-aged or older, you probably won't get much enjoyment out of Columbia unless you live in the suburbs and can find a lot of stuff for your own age to do, wherever that may be.
Not much from my observations. I'm 40 and I go there all the time. Columbia has a very high proportion of younger adults but there's always plenty of visitors and locals from the other age groups as well. I know plenty of middle aged people from STL and KC that go there regularly on weekend trips. There's always something going on down there. If I wasn't tied to my job, I'd move there in an instant.
I don't know why there's so much hate. It's certainly not the BEST city around, but it's still far from the WORST. Of course, I'm not really into bars or niche cafes and clubs like Blue Note, so I could do without those wastes of space. And the hippie stores I couldn't care less about, either. But there are still a lot of great places to visit there. I did enjoy the fact that were so many cool shops, restaurants, etc. (including a Slacker's) just a 5 or 10-minute walk from campus.
@whoo689 You can believe that 99.99% of that comes from goofy Nebraska and Kansas fans who probably haven't even ever been to Columbia. Class and honesty isn't one of their vocabulary. Columbia is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in America so obviously they're doing plenty of things right.
I lived in Columbia from 1975-1981. Some good memories, but generally speaking I found most Missourians to be stuck Aholes. This state couldn't even decide which side to be on during the civil war.
@101971854 With comments like that I have to wonder if the problem really wasn't your attitude rather than the residents of Columbia or Missouri. I've been to Columbia many times and have found the majority of people there to be very pleasant and helpful. Everyone else I know that's been there says the same. That makes it appear as if maybe you need to do a little soul searching and ask yourself this question. "Am I an asshole?".
@101971854 If you're an asshole then you'll probably get treated like one. I visit Columbia regularly and have never had a bad experience one time with the people there. They've always been extremely friendly and helpful.
@TheElefaunt They're actually not crazy rednecks at all, just a few bad apples here and there... our police chief thinks pot should be legal, and the residents sure as hell do.
Not to mention a corrupt police force who tazes people on no grounds whatsoever and shoots family pets in order to gain less than an ounce of weed. Oh, not to mention the pro-nazism view they take on minorities.
@mypiratehat Really? Everytime I've been there I've seen people of every nationality imaginable enjoying themselves. I'm thinking you're probably some University of Kansas or Nebraska fanatic that's just a wee bit bitter about Columbia being shed in a positive light.
@mypiratehat Obama won Boone County in a landslide. Don't know many "pro-nazis" that would vote for a black man. I find it strange that I've been there so many times and never seen or met one. As for cops tazing people, guess what, that's happens in every city in America on a daily basis. In San Francisco, the liberal capital of America, a police officer shot a guy to death in a train station just because he wouldn't get up when he told him to. Clearly you've never been to Columbia.
Rack & Roll Billiards is gone now. So's Shakey's & Churrascaria Steakhouse. The steakhouse is now a Mexican Restaurant, but they're moving soon. Nothing stays in that spot for long.
UMC was last on my college quicklist, but I would have had a better intro to college in Columbia. It has a decent size population, great journalism school, and the town is VERY open to it's college students. I remember an active Greek scene, ugly girls(all nose) and decent gay scene for being in the middle of nowhere.
@gravelandgrain100 Lots of tornados? Hmmm. Hasn't been a tornado in the city of Columbia itself in the 40 years that I've been alive. Only been one anywhere near it that I can remember. Granted, I don't live there but it would have been on the local news here if there had been one.
I am not going to argue with you, because arguing with a child begets nothing but a headache. I lived in Columbia and St Louis-city for many years. There were at least-I say at least 10 tornado warnings a season in both of those areas. I am unsure as to why you press comment posters on one issue with Columbia. It is a great town, I live in Minnesota, and we do have tornadoes here but not as frequently as MO. I wish you positive energy, cause you won't get far on your own steam. xo
@gravelandgrain100 Let me explain to you what childish is. Kids like to blurt out opinions without knowing what they're talking about. That's child-like. Tornado warnings aren't the same as an actual tornado. It just means all the conditions are right for one to form. I see one on television two or three times a week during the spring in this area. That amounts to thousands of warnings. Yet, I've never actually seen one in person.
I'm not pressing you about anything. Just correcting you. It's not a matter of me having negative energy. It's a matter of you not being big enough to accept the fact that you're wrong about something and move on. In my book that's a whole lot more negative than my correcting you. It's not very becoming. Hard to learn anything when you think you know it all already.
i was born in Columbia... Dont remember much cuz i was young when i moved to wisconsin (not by choice) but what i thought i knew about it... it was a small town!!
Thanks for the memories. I lived in Columbia Mo. 1979-1980 year and miss the wonderful town. However after hearing that the town has grown to 100000 plus and has now more than 4 zip codes, has the town lost it's small town quantness? I urge residences who came from Katrina, to keep the town as you arrived there. Thanks for the video again.

Hahahaha. Sorry man. No brothels there. Columbia is a college town so there are young ladies aplenty there though. Between the University of Missouri and other small colleges in Columbia there's close to 40,000 students there so you'll find a lot of people your age around to keep you company. Keep in mind though that Columbia and the surrounding communities are small towns though. It's a far cry from being in London. St. Louis and Kansas City aren't that far away though.
I lived in Columbia my Sophmore and Junior years of high school. Attended both Hickman and Rockbridge. I miss it so much. Was headed back, just have not made it yet. Not to say I won't though. Best two years of my entire life. Nice people, nice place. Miss my buds - Chet, Vince, John, and everyone else. Maybe someday........
Living on the W. Coast now. It was nice to look back on my hometown. I was thinking, what about that silly place, Tropical Liqueurs? I hope you'll make another that includes the parks and lakes (Little Dixie Lake, too). Nice job.
