Part 2 to my prior post. I remembered to mention the things that are difficult for me and forgot to mention a very important one:
5. even when she does not come to a full stop to collect, she "passes through" collection. Watch how she goes back with the left foot in step #7 (which forms a backwards "L") to meet right foot before it becomes a side step to her left. If the follower does not collect after every step, she becomes impossible to lead.
We have recently started to enjoy the Argentine Tango at the Ballroom classes we attend. The videos have added another dimension to our dancing. we have been able to pick up the style and feel of the dance much easier. Many thanks for creating such wonderful instructional videos.
my tango cross is not going well. I keep ending up more to my right than I should be and my partner has to take the next step slightly left to correct. Also it feels like my steps are mushing together when going into a cross. Help!!!
Try to make you 4th step a little shorter and also make sure to keep you partner in front of you. Of course it will help if I could see you do it , but in this case i can only help virtually :) good luck and happy tangos!
This is the best series in Tango Instruction in ALL of YouTube. If you don't get it after this, then it's no fault of the teacher. After this try Tangocity, then watch Tango Helena to fill in any mysteries.
I found Tangocity a year ago when I knew nothing about Argentine tango. But everthing in slow motion confused me more than it helps and that made me abandon Argentine tango. Recently I saw Dario's Tango Guide and it shows how Argentine tango is done in real time and made it simple. That made me start to learn this dance. You are a superb instructor. Thank you!
What is the music being played right at the start, when the woman is saying "Welcome to Dario's Tango Guide"? I would love to find it on itunes to purchase. I adore Argentine Tango; will do more lessons this summer!
I learned that there is no basic step, and that the first thing to learn is weight changes and walking forward (or backward if you're a follow), and that at any given moment I can step anywhere, whether side, forward, back, cross, whatever. Of course, I'm a beginner.
This is very true too. But my approach to teaching is with a little more structure. In a beginner mind the way they are showing you could be a little confusing.(in my experience) but of course is always best to explore whats best for you. Of course there is so much to learn in tango. the base of it is gigantic. Many different aspects to it. Music, connection, energy, quality of movement, ufffff long list.
reminds me of blues in that way, I went to a class with blues and the first thing he said was, "there is no basic" and all the beginners just stared at him like his head turned into a lemon.
Yeah, Blues makes Tango look really structured by comparison! If you can't handle the improvisatory nature of Tango, then don't try Blues! (Just started doing blues 2 weeks ago)
The 8-count pattern was introduced by stage dancers on tour because it's similar to the box step that European and American ballroom dancers know. Argentines teaching Argentines seem to prefer the molinete (wheel) as the basic, where the woman walks around the man in four, six, or eight steps while he turns in place. This works better in Argentine milongas where people are often literally shoulder-to-shoulder. Then they use the caminada when the floor opens up.
This is a pretty good introduction to 5 count basic. But many teachers today do not recommend this pattern because of the "dreaded" back step on count 1. It is too easy, especially as a beginner to step on someones foot when stepping backward. The leader needs to be aware of who is behind him and take a tiny back step.
Come on :))) its Argentine Tango its not standard tango. In standard tango you walk you dont straight your knees as in waltz.Tango as a standard dance has to have the both partners in knees, and most important is to have the " stacato ". So this is argentinian tango :) dont mix it.
Argentine tango dancers use the term "tango" as if Argentine tango is the only form of tango. That's just the way it is with them. Actually, there are several forms of tango. The main 3 are American tango, International (really English) tango, and Argentine tango.
:) I dance IDSF tango the standard techniques european. Really dont like the argentinian tango as a technique of a dance :)how they have theyr heads together :) like narrow tower in PIZZA :), what ever it is dance I accept it and more I accept to wimin that are danceing it :) how they move with the special argentinian tango skirts and long legs :). Keep on doing it.
To me, tango is a just a extension of Argentina abroad. Afterward each nation makes it is own with his nationnal personnality, dances adapting to its national skills and abilities... To sum it up, each country makes it his own ! But at the very biginning Tango is from Argentina, isn't it ?! The point is : Who grows who ?....
i just "found" you.. (cher & pete told us about you (from albany... well, i cant get guide one to open!!! just loving your lessons .... wish you were here in florida!! joanc228

THANKS!
As a follower, I appreciate Claire Vivo's grace & precision and wish that more of what I see her doing was spelled out in the narration such as:
1.she is maintaining a slight forward lean;
2.she keeps her feet, heels together and toes out, in the shape of a "V";
3.she extends the free leg back first before moving over it;
4.I am not sure but, when going back, she seems to allow him to land a fraction of a second before she does.
If not looking very closely, this could be missed.
