  • i sweear to god he said his name was sandypiper.

  • thats a big business card

  • This would make a really cheap thin client for VDI if VMware or Citrix decided to provide a native client

  • Cant wait to have one...

  • The future is here !

  • @baskervillemanor Wow, you are very helpful! If it were me I would shoot everyone to the forums! Thanks for your detailed answers.

  • @GRAYPAW99 Yes, I would advocate people going to the Raspberry Pi forums and also checking out related YouTube videos regarding the Raspberry Pi.

  • This does not look 100% as described on raspberry pi's site. Your using a different power connector on this board, on their site it specifically points out on multiple posts a 5V micro-usb connector. Why is this changed?

  • @imthecoolman9998 this was a preview board.

  • @andypiperuk is the video outputting on the screen?how did you guys accomplish that?

  • @debuggernigger it was some preview software the RPi people had running. You'd have to ask them via their site. I don't know.

  • @andypiperuk Nevermind found it,it`s called DirectFB,it outputs on the terminal (without needing a graphics server)

  • Next time, can you fix the audio before uploading? This sounded so bad with headphones.

  • my credit card number is 9009847644211334. Pi please?

  • Hmmm...

    One for Puppyarcade

    One for Ubuntu

    One for XBMC

    One For Zoneminder

    One for Torrenting

    One for File Server/NAS

    One for Minecraft... Hopefully...

    I CANT WAIT!!!

    Hooray Raspberry pi...

  • @BroknSircut

Yeah...minecraft won't run on it. Gaurantee it.

You might be able to pull off one of the open source clones, though.

  • @BroknSircut >Puppy arcade Maybe. >Ubuntu. No, can't get ubuntu. >XBMC It may not have XBMC, but something similar. >Zoneminder. Not sure about this. >Torrenting. Limited by SD card size. >File server. Again, limited. >Minecraft. Not a chance in hell.
  • @hatman28 You do know its got usb OTG support, so you'll be able to connect a hard drive to it without providing a power supply to the hard drive.

  • @BroknSircut There are no plans for Ubuntu to be ported to the Raspberry Pi, meaning Canonical, the maintainer of Ubuntu, has said it will NOT put support into this project. The only main versions of Linux that will be available are Debian and Fedora.

I have doubts this micro-computer could run Minecraft well enough to be enjoyable for most. I idea behind the RP is to get open and cheap-to-buy computers into the hands of potential developers and programmers.

  • @baskervillemanor potential developers and programmers already have PC's and if they don't have a PC they would likely just buy a $50 used desktop which has proper PCI slots and more USB ports, along with more upgrade ability (AGP, pci express)

  • @canufi I think you are failing to see the whole picture of the purpose and need for the Raspberry Pi. The Pi is open and has no restrictions and can easily be replaced in a school. Also, as the Pi is cheap to buy it means most people will be able to buy one. This means significant potential growth of computers being available in poor countries which means people who become digitally enfranchised and are able to catch up to other areas of the world where such tech has flourished

  • OGOMGOMG. Please, just release it for sale :O

  • What distro will this run?

  • @McKenna654 I think I read somewhere that the default Linux distro that will be installed on the Raspberry Pi when they ship will be a basic Debian OS. It most likely will have a low-resource desktop environment running on it too.

  • Seed box, files servers, media server, backup over Gigabit Lan... I can see this thing embedded/hacked in door chime with a webcam to provide video/voice box or on the fridge for note taking immediately sent to email. Mate the pi with any cheap LCD picture display and thumb keyboard and you got a mini laptop that can be inserted in all sort of case! (GameBoy, Hollowed Book, Mailbox) It a tinkerer wet dream come true I might just have to get like 10!

  • i want 2, maybe 3, at least :D

  • how much would this cost if it can run at full speed arkham City without lag/freeze/slow

  • @DARKZERO216psn You are kidding right asking such a thing? In order to play modern PC and console games you would have to put out a few hundred bucks at least for a good CPU and a good GPU card. The only games you will be able to play well enough on the Raspberry Pi are either old games (more than 5 to 7 years old) or very basic, simple games, like Peggle or Plants Vs Zombies. You aren't gonna be playing XBox 360 / PS3 quality games on it or anything like Crysis or Team Fortress.

  • I thought this was released already.

  • Andy - there is hope. I've got to get one of these for the kids.

  • Why would you teach children programming, it's too advanced for them.

  • @GotenSSJ1 I was programing basic in my spectrum with nine years old, and if I had the computer before, even more young. It's only interest in something.

  • @GotenSSJ1 Maybe its time to stop treating kids like they're idiots. In the early 1900's books that are standard highschool curriculum now were being read by 2nd and 3rd graders.

  • i keep throwing my money to screen but nothing happens:O

  • @TheHalflife123 you're not in India my friend ;) (or are you????)

  • @kroqgar78 :O:O

  • Every TV should come with this...

  • i want 3 ! :)

  • Can you just load ubuntu onto it? If so, can you just use remote desktop rather than plugging the keyboard to it? That way, it can be located anywhere as long as it has eithernet plugged in..

  • @baloneyjazz Ubuntu is not planning to support the Raspberry Pi. Only Linux versions of Debian and Fedora are planned to be supported and to have help. If you want Ubuntu, you're gonna have to figure out how to put it on yourself basically.

  • @baskervillemanor can I use it to run remote desktop and have it connected to an arduino?

  • @baloneyjazz Remote desktop is a possible ability, but I cannot speak with authority in this area. The Raspberry Pi, you must remember, is equivalent in power and specs to a top-notch desktop computer made seven to ten years ago. I get the feeling a lot of people think the RP will be capable and equal to todays desktop computers and that would be a false thing to base your wishes and beliefs on.

  • @andypiperuk Wish it had SATA and DDR3(or 2) support. Then lots of us will buy it,

  • It's nice.. now where a box that's really need to cover it up from any dusts??? Derp.

  • I've seen video cards with a greater chip count. Good job!

  • How can we get internet to developing nations to take advantage of this? That and the display remain problematic.

  • @jag9998 I don't see how this is going to help developing nations. You can buy used Dell computers and IBM's with a small form factor for about $35 each in truckloads. The advantage of a real computer (dell or ibm) over the raspberry pi device, is that, it is a real computer, that has PCI slots and everything. What advantage is there with the raspberry pi? it's cheaper to ship, I guess, but still you need to buy a 17" LCD screen for people... so the size of the motherboard is moot.

  • @canufi You can buy pallets of surplus computers for as low as $35, but it wouldn't be enough for everyone. About 100 thousand computers survive their expected lifespan and are surplussed each year.

Let's say that there were 10 million people who needed a computer (very conservative), and every surplus computer available was given to them. It would take 100 years to help all those people. By then, we will have figured out how to make dirt compute.

Screen can be an old tv. Much more common.

  • @canufi extremely low power consumption, especially compared to used PCs and it has rca/hdmi to hook to any tv.

  • @jon780 It basically has the same power consumption of an Apple TV or Roku box. You could literally leave it on 24-7 and not worry about the electric bill.

  • @canufi dumb :D it's all about portable functions.

  • @fretka022 it's not about portability, it's about a charity and third world countries. Third world countries would be much better off with small desktops that have desktop functionality, not a crippled circuit board.

  • @canufi It's not about third world countries, it's about UK schoolkids learning programming. They're planning to sell it to schools at more or less cost price to either use in class or distribute to their students so they can work at home. That's why it uses hdmi rather than vga, lets kids plug straight into a tv at home rather than having to buy a monitor

  • @SolidSquid1 maybe i miss something but is not VGA connector on more TV's than HDMI?

  • @canufi you are right.

  • But can it handle x264 High@L4.1?

  • On the label it says Pi foundation is creating a small ultra low cost computer so why are they selling on ebay for as much as £3,500.00 that aint low cost to me wtf

  • @lozthegreat1 I was about to post the same thing lol. But the retard that is paying 3500 is only paying that much because it's #1 so he can say i got it first... then hopefully in a year or so we can buy one for £20 haha.

  • @BritishRider The expensive ones on Ebay right now are the beta versions; it's basically for either comercial companies who want to make money from an early release, or for wellwishers wanting to donate lots of money to the cause, while getting something cool back :3

    That or collectors.

  • @lozthegreat1 It's the Beta board, wich makes it a test version of the Pi. People are mainly bidding on it for collectible or historical value and maybe using it for developing similar computers.

  • @lozthegreat1 because people are f*cktarded morons... $3500, are you serious?

  • no way this will be as cheap as they say it will when it comes to release!!

  • @anitatime It will be, that's the whole point...

  • @ksbnr1 people don't keep their promise when it comes to over budget production costs..

  • i hope they design a nice compact little case for it.

  • I can't wait till the final version is released because they chose some good hardware (the gpu could have done better) for use in Neuron emulation.

  • Im sooo gonna get this

  • I am from Mexico, I am very interested to buy it. Is it a dealer in Mexico? Thanks and go ahead!!!

  • which the consumption of computer watts + -??

a PC like it could run BOINC?

when it comes out for retail sale?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @alanolicheski

most ARM processors go in mobile phones and cosume 1-2 watts but this one may consume more since it's not running on a battery.

current x86 windows software will not work with this processor, only software for Google's 'android' and Apple's 'iOS' will work with it (tho apple would never let these guys use their OS), Microsoft is currently building an ARM-version of Windows.

  • @arkatub Windows 8 is going to be ARM ready!!! I believe the Developer version will already run on ARM architecture.

  • @chronic8000 sure, but the Windows licence will be 5x what the

Pi board costs! In other words, why bother - stick with the Linux OS and do stuff with it, you don't have to use Windows.

  • @gbjbaanb or say no to linux, and install BSD

  • @canufi Who the hell wants BSD other than anti-social, networking maintainers? BSD equals shitty everyday, desktop experience. The only major plus for BSD is that it is a stable and secure OS for servers and nothing more. BSD as an average OS for most would be horrific, annoying, and a major turnoff. Linux is so far more developed and maintained by many and actually has a potential future in the world other than being a server OS.

  • @baskervillemanor BSD isn't infected with the communist GPL richard stallman (dick stall man)

  • @canufi Yes, it's fair to say, Richard Stallman is a polemical figure, however, it's also safe to say he does not represent all of the Linux userbase and its advocates and maintainers. I have nothing against proprietary and closed-source software being used in Linux or any other operating system, yet I still see the benefits overall of advocating open-source and massive collaboration between developers worldwide.

  • Were can I by this machine!?

  • This is great stuff for educational purposes! Only 35 Bucks? buy buy

  • "Debian, Fedora and ArchLinux will be supported from the start."

But there's going to be a graphical environment for a newbie user or a command line system (an endless terminal) instead ?

  • @McMenios Either one. It is indeed capable of running a standard Linux desktop environment, but it can also run in terminal mode if desired.

  • I wish they could have given it a cute casing instead of allowing the user to see the Hardware---but I like it though!!!

  • This is a great idea. first me being cheap (Ahem) if you could stick this in a case of some kind, shove a shedload of films on the SD card, you would have a silent video playing computer... Im using an old xbox with xbmc at the mo and its getting noisier every day. Although i have a CRT TV so it would have to be comp out, hmmm tricky with the audio. il check the w/site for this. It looks really good. great vid. Thanks

  • SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY

  • my news server ssh :]

  • fap fap fap fap fap

  • That thing's so little it's almost lost in the accessories!

  • where is the ram, graphic card and processor? huh? how this work?

  • @cawoosh They are inside the Broadcom chip. It is called a "SoC", system on a chip.

"how this work?" It is a complete computer inside 1 chip, that is "SoC". The chip was originally made for low-end cell phones.

  • even though the design concept is essentially a stripped down mobile phone, this is genius.

I'm extremely impressed by its price+size to performance ratio

  • @Crownw3 That's not the case at all, this is based on the concept of introducing programming and code to kids in the same way BBC Micro's and ZX spectrum's did.

  • what we want now is a cute raspberry pi box to fit it all in !!

  • the orders for this pc will be millions ! well done to the smart people at cambridge!! this pc will sell in to the millions in asia and africa because its so cheap to buy

  • If it comes with wifi connection I'm sold

  • @iamyou0976 It doesn't, but you can connect a USB WiFi device supported by the kernel(=Linux).

  • nice all they need to do is put it into a smartphone now!!

  • ROM or RAM?

  • @GamepitDAngelo

256 mb ram, SD card as storage.

  • no ram?

  • Comment removed

  • @clerlic It runs Quake 3 rather smoothly, so maybe yes.

  • Палец вверх, кто из хабрасюда пришел!

  • Quantum Computing - Bring it on!

  • full hd huh? keep me updated cuz I need one for my room/backpack/...

  • Does it have an audio in plug?

  • @Donatello1015 I don't believe so (although the final board may have added one) but you could always use a USB connected audio device to add a mic.

  • @Donatello1015

While I have no reason to doubt it could, I didn't see any suggestion that this device would make an effective encoder. I believe the device was decoding H.264 from the SD card at a sufficient rate (PAL or NTSC) to properly render 1080p video on the demo monitor, but I'd like to know whether it has a fast USB host controller, how tasks (like demuxing) are assigned to hardware or firmware, and whether the device performs concurrent AAC decoding for output through its HDMI port.

  • I have absolutely no desire to be cynical about this--I'm just astonished by the possibility that I can attach a USB hard drive to this device and view 1080p mkv files on any HDMI-equipped flatscreen for $25.

  • @Donatello1015 Yes it does have a standard audio jack (3.5mm) and it can provide sound over the HDMI port

  • @Donatello1015 YES! (Check out Raspberrypi . org)

  • @Donatello1015 Yes, it has a jack and hdmi output(for video and audio)

  • @Donatello1015 How come you don't know this already, I thought you did machines, dude!!!!

  • @Donatello1015 The final board has a 3.5mm jack audio output.

  • @Donatello1015 HDMI

  • I have no idea what the hell I'd do with one of these. But I'm going to buy one anyway.

  • it also runs on unbunto and this will help people get familiar with the linux OS and possibly programing!

  • so glad they are including a composite video out. the goal of a 25$ computer is to be able to sell it to developing nations. kids in BF no where can now plug into second hand junk and be able to begin to learn. The net open to them, communication at the click of a button, KNOWLEDGE available on demand!

the best implementation of technology i have seen so far in this new century.

  • @bromah

This is before or after they ruin the internet with SOPA?

ps: I will buy one or two for sure, they are magnificent in every way. I love the power usage.

  • @bromah you can buy used computers for $25-$50 that are 1-3Ghz, what in the hell does the Raspberry pi offer than a used $50 computer doesn't offer? The only advantage of the raspberry pi device would be the shipping cost. What point is there to having such a small motherboard though if you are going to be using a 17 inch monitor anyway? With a 17 inch monitor, the size of your motherboard is irrelevant. THe size and weight of 17" lcd screens is never going to change to be smaller..

  • So Basically, it's like a little computer?

  • @flaperise It 'is' a little computer. :)

  • now if only it could run photoshop :(

  • @qoaa ha ha ha too bad should have waited for this to come out

  • makes me feel bad that my laptop can't play 1080

  • Just imagine, if David Braben had access to this kind of technology as a child he would have learnt how to say 'obfuscated' properly. Instead, he travels around the world saying "obfusticated" his own special made up word that bears only a passing resemblence to the genuine word found in the dictionary. This technology will change lives and no amount of obfustication will stop it.

  • I would buy 10 of them and donate the RB's to schools in Morocco.

Little, old schools in little villages nobody ever heard of.

  • Its perfect to learn programming on, i learnt BASIC on a C-64 before it got stolen ;( and a ZX Spectrum, this is 1000 times superior.

It would be a good idea if Raspberry Pi made an all in one unit that had a keyboard and trackpad.

But still, i'm liking the idea, i hope it starts a programming revolution at the home and the School. ICT in the UK at the mo is a joke, learning Word or Powerpoint is great if you want to be a secretary, not so great if u want to be a games programmer.

  • @05Rudey What kind of secretaries use powerpoint? Powerpoint is clearly a presentation tool why would a secretary use it? Perhaps to demo to the boss the rise and fall of postage note usage around the office? Explain what possible use powerpoint is to a secretary because I'm saying you got that wrong. Although I don't know anything about ICT, I now doubt the credibility of your other criticism based on the ill-informed powerpoint remark that makes no sense whatsoever. Wrong Wrong Wrong.

  • @srjones8

Its a requerd skill if you want to become a secretery, as they normally do all of their employers work, including powerpoint presentations. You actually think all the middle aged middle management executives actually do any powerpoint work do you? If you would rather learn how to use powerpoint, Word and Excel at school rather than Computer Science skills like Programming, Networking,Software engineering and Databases then be my guess. Its your career choice...

  • @05Rudey I'm not sure what you mean by "be my guess" it's guest surely? Programming is overrated anyway. What kids needs in school is games consoles so they can learn how to have fun. Programming is for stuffy old farts living in the 1960s. Kids who want to learn programming can always pick up a book on it. As a priority though, those kids should be learning how to aim straight on Call of Duty so they don't get pwned and bring shame on their family.

  • @srjones8

So where are all the games going to come from for all these games consoles if people don't learn programming in the future? Games arnt produced by magic alone. Even COD was a pet project of Ben Chichoski, who learnt programming not by learning how to use Word and Powerpoint but by learning C++ in his Computer Science classes at school.

With devices like this combined with Computer Science lessons at the School place, will insure that there will be plenty of games in the future.

  • Which window manager or media player is it using?

  • this is faster then my first ibm computer

  • this would make a good mp3 media player for your tv also

  • Comment removed

  • The datasheet for the CPU BCM2835 IC chip is NOT available to the public!

  • Is it use sd card as its storage?

  • @adhiofawkes yes, as I show in the video, there's an SD card slot on the underside of the board that the OS boots from. If you need more information please ask on the Raspberry Pi website.

  • I don't think my brain can comprehend how awesome this is.

  • I can't wait till this is finally available. I really hope it wont be hard to buy this.

I'm also wondering, since it uses/allows HDMI output, does that allow me to plug it straight into my HD TV, which has HDMI? Or does it only work with computer monitors, not TVs?

  • @NikoKun yes, any display with HDMI as far as I know.

  • @andypiperuk what program u use to play this video?

  • The final board will be smaller than this anyway.

  • Please go and ask technical questions on the Raspberry Pi forums - I can't answer them here. Thanks.

  • I can't see DRAM chip on PCB. Where is the RAM located?

  • @USR15616 I think it's integrated in the CPU (stacked on top of it)

  • How much RAM memory does it have?

  • @ffuentese go look on the Raspberry Pi site where they have an FAQ

  • I think this is unlike to succeed as scale economy of smart phones will led to phone computers. Just take a look to Motorola/Google Atrix and its dock station.

  • @Otakumasim the point is to create a useful education device, not a desktop replacement.

  • Where's my strawberry shortcake computer?

  • I hope these do not go the way of the guruplugs. I hear they overheat.

  • @trailingdot should not be an issue - I was invited to touch the CPU/integrated system chip after it had been running this video for some time and it wasn't too warm at all.

  • Yo, does Debian run on this?

  • @trailingdot yes

  • This is an awesome project, I think everyone here though about a way to use this, there are many possibilities. It came to me that I could use this to create a "retro-gaming" console, running some emulators with usb gamepads. I would like to use this to teach computing, programing and gaming (why not?) to my kids.

  • @UnixTiago We'll have to port emulators from the native x86 code.

  • If it runs Debian, I will be happy.

  • this will make a great pc to store my r@ygold, hussyfan and kingpass collections and still be able to keep it hidden from authorities.

  • And now the question is... Will it BLEND ?????

  • Understandable, I just would like to see it used by people that are trying to go green on simple services like firewalls, routing and security.

  • @rdw283 totally agree - works well in all kinds of scenarios! :-)

  • But can it run Crysis?

  • Its awesome to see this in action, can't wait for its realse. You should add a riser card that supports more NIC's so it can be used with Pfsense, Vyatta, UnTangle, ClearOS or any other appliance that could use more NIC's.

I will buy a few for . . . IIS hosting, ClamAV scanner and Pfsense.

Someone should make a rack draw that can hold a bunch of these so you can consolidate in a server rack.

Thanks for coming up with this device, I know it will do well.

  • @rdw283 The important thing, in my opinion, is that this is aimed as an education device - so it's our responsibility to help them to get more kids coding and learning about computers... of course it's also nice to have low cost, small, lower power boards like this, but it's targeting educational scenarios.

  • It`s Ubuntu ? Gnome 2 ? Mplayer?

    Also it`s look amazing !

  • @Struk0FF linux/ gnu/

    the power of open source

  • @frvfilms lol, I know about OpenSource, I`m using linux now
