my worst dentist experience was in USA. I was going to get braces & the orthodontist was checking my mouth & told me to stick my tongue out & when i did they said "THAT'S ALL?" & told me I had to get the bottom of my tongue clipped & 4 other teeth extracted. Before the day, I went to the family doctor & my mom asked about it & he said my tongue is perfectly fine. we tried to persuade the surgeon but he declined. it was waste of money and I couldn't talk for a month or eat much. T_T
HA my wifes father is dentist! I always go to Japan and get my teeth fixed for free! Its really good because normally i hate to go to the dentist (dentist fear) at least now i wont need to be scared and robbed of money at the same time. :P
you paid only 1000 yen because of you national health insurance.. My brother came in Japan last year and need an chirurgical operation of a tooth .. and of course no natinonal health insurance in Japan right.. he was here with a tourist visa.. so the first dentist refused to do it because no insurance..
the second one, accepted without insurance, but the total cast was ¥122,000 (¥100,000 for operation, and ¥22,000 3days latter for a check..)so if no insurance in Japan it s really expensive ;-)
True, but your brother should have gotten travel insurance. I always get it when I go to a country where I have no insurance. It's cheap. Damn, too bad for your bro. That sounds painful....Live and learn. HOWEVER, my parents were here with no insurance and both got sick and both went to the doctor for a visit and it was less than $100 for both of them. I honestly don't know if there is a national policy for tourists.....
@Gimmeaflakeman I think he tried to get the money back once back in europe, and got it ( or a part of it)
The problem here was that the operation was risky ( hole on the jaw's bone near the tooth) so he had to go to the dentist of british or us embassy, don't remember. ( the only one that accepted to help him.. was really really painful and absolutly need an operation... ) I guess when you have no choice, you have to pay lol
I went to the Dentist several times in Japan. The dentist kept asking me to come back. So instead of fixing all the probelms in one go (which I would have preferred). I had to go back six times to do 2 fillings. So I went to another Dentist and he did the same. So I've learnt that's how they make their money, ne.
@Koroodetto I had the opp experience. My dentist was MILES away & he'd always voice concern for me having to trek down there & would go out of his way to accommodate me. He also wouldn't do any unnecessary treatment. Once I begged him for an injection (such a wimp) before he started treatment and he refused. In the end, he said he'd start the procedure & if it hurt I could have an injection. It didn't hurt, lol. Minoura clinic in Kurokawa, Aichi on Meijo line if anyones interested. I had Masataka
@Koroodetto sensei. Lovely bloke. Although, judging from the animated way he spoke about visiting England briefly for training or something, I gather he may have a bit of a soft spot for Brits.
Geez, dental work in general sounds super expensive (more so in the USA I think, that sounds like a great deal you got in Japan with your insurance). I think in Britain we have to pay for dentist appointments (not sure how much though) but the actual getting of braces for example is free as long as you're under 18 :) Again, no idea how much it is for over 18's :O It seems like a bit of a rip-off anyway, spending so much money on denatl work :(
I just went to my first vist in Japan. The clinic was clean and modern I had my teeth cleaned and a x-ray for about 3,500 yen. Oh...dental tech was great she explained how I was brushing my teeth wrong. I had a good experience !
Uugh dentists in Canada are so damn expensive, you have to have great insurance to have it covered. I got two wisdom teeth out last February and it cost $1300, plus $275 previous to that for the "consultation". Thankfully I had insurance and they covered almost $1000! But it's still always a horrible experience going to the dentist ew.
I´d never realized this before until my friend made a comment like her teeth got weaker since she came here in JPN, she said the water here doesn´t have fluorine and BRA they have, i don´t know if it´s true. Anyway, Victor, how much would you pay if you didn´t have insurance? Thanx.
@Gimmeaflakeman haha should I tell you something ? When I got to the dentist, in any case, i pay around 0 $.. We in Germany don't have to pay for any doctors.. Just like 10Euro every 3 Months, but only if we are going to any doctor and if we paid the 10 Euro wen can come to the doctor in these 3 Months as often as we want to. So It sounds really odd when I hear how much you have to pay for that o.O.. We only have to pay if we want special things like golden dental crowns instead of white ones..
@joetioeb for sure.. but the amount is fairly low and a lot of other things are included... for sure the doctors aren't working for nothing but when i hear about the amount you have to pay for doctors and medicines.. WOW !
Welcome back Victor! I'm glad to see you are back posting again. I think your shows are better than t.v.!
The stuff they put in your mouth is a composite resin for tooth bonding. It replaces mercury and metal fillings. They use it here in the U.S. and it literally bonds with the tooth which makes it better than metal fillings.
They sell daily fluoride rinse in the U.S. which helps make your teeth stronger and yes, your memory is right, the dental hygienist are pretty and young in the U.S.
I feel for ya Victor! Within the last 2 months I've had major oral surgery, had 7 teeth pulled, had a number of fillings, and now a new partial denture. $3000 *after* insurance! But now doing well and presentable. You're lucky it was just a little bit!
alittle off topic but just out of curiosity in a year and a half or 2 years maybe im planning to go to Japan to look for an english teaching job ... in your opinion which is a good start ? Ekiiwa ? or like teaching adults or kids ? and when im there how do i do such a thing ? do i just walk in the school and ask if they are hiring lol ? thanks ! @(^_^)@
This was not the video I should have watched... tooth phobia, just thinking about the dentist gives me shivers. Though I have had a crown put on one of my molars (because of my wisdom tooth) and with insurance it was about $200 after all was said and done here in the States.
I am alive! I got to this video late but i made it! Good to see you Victor and i know what its like to have a tooth ache. :( Very fun video as always though. I like how you look at the humor of things.
Man Victor I'm so glad you're back I was looking forward to a new video, glad to hear you're all better. Great video! One little remark, you put "you're tooth" in the subs, I guess you were a bit confused, just thought you might want to know! Thanks for the information!
In germany the insurance covers the cost for braces mostly...I don't know the complete cost, it's probably expensive but due to the insurance my sister only had to pay 400 euro, the rest was covered.
I don't pay for check ups either. Well, if I go to a doctor for one I have to pay 10€ in a quarter of a year and can then go to as many doctors in that quarter without having to pay more if it's just a check up. As a girl you don't have to pay for contraceptives (the pill) either until you're 21.
OMG! THat's so cheap for a dentist visit! In Denmark, you end up paying at least 100 dollars for a normal check up. If there's a cavity, it can easily run up to 300 dollars. Last time my father went to the dentist, he paid about 700 dollars....
did you know that crabs dna does not detiriorate like other animales, we cant tell the age of a lobster and ther is a posibilitie that somewhere in deep oceans may live 1000 year old ones perhaps size of submarines this is legitymet biological theory
maaaaaaaaan, only 16 bucks for it all?.. i'm in Finland and one doctor pulled out my tooth last year for 120 euros, and THAT was considered cheap here.... lucky bastards in Japan :)
You're subs are watching my videos (even if they don't understand nothing) xD. Glad you're back hope you don't have more complications, teeth hurt a LOT. Now go answer my email or yaeba are going to grow in your mouth muahahahaha.
About cavities: I have never had a cavity in all my life. I'm going to be getting braces on my crooked bottom teeth, but I'm afraid the braces will obstruct access from brushing. I take pride in the fact I've never had a cavity so I hope braces don't screw it up for me!
@DavePerry2012 I agree. The Japanese are super humble. But I'm sure Vic knows she finds him sexy. Haha. I'm with a French girl who'd laugh in my face if I ever complimented my own looks.
My dental hygeinist said good things about Japanese dentistry, and I am so glad to hear about it straight from the horse's mouth ;) For some reason, it's just one of those things I'm interested in, hm. Our dentistry in the US is so expensive, and possibly most people don't have dental insurance - it's just not as widely offered. And even if you have it, with monthly premiums and co-pays, it get very expensive. I just paid a $1500 bill :(
Dentist in the UK: You have to pay around 4,000 yen just to see the doctor. So many times I've been to the dentist, for him to look at my teeth for 2 minutes, say 'You have lovely teeth!" and then pay 4,000yen... grr...!!
Just on a side note, I don't think Tomoko was criticizing you, Victor, when she reacted to you saying "I'm still good looking". She probably just thought it sounded like you were bragging about your looks (which are indeed very handsome). I don't think she was trying to come across like she thought your were ugly or anything like that.
10 years ago when I was in high school, there was a Japanese student who came to stay for a year in Australia partly for study, but also to get cheaper braces. I found that interesting.
Actually I asked Hiko if you were still alive. LOL. Tomoko looked panicked at being your wife(real wife is a hottie) I broke my front tooth last week eating a steak sandwich of all things. Got it fixed the next day. Didn't have to pay anything for it thanks to insurance. Got a cleaning an cavities fixed this week and still no copay.Tomoko gesture = Yeah, Right!
Welcome back, good sir! I've been putting off going to the dentist since I got to Japan. I've heard a couple of stories from coworkers and friends who have had more invasive dental procedures (root canals, wisdom teeth removals and the like). The constant that runs through all of their tales is that Japanese dentists typically don't have anesthesia that is strong enough for many Westerners. Have you experienced anything like this, at the dentist or elsewhere?
Man I need to be sure to take care of any dental problems before I go over there cause I can't stand having dental work done on me; I can imagine the nightmare that it would be in a foreign country where I can't fully communicate with the dentist. I have bad gag reflexes.
@KidManga69 It is very simple. You purchase something called a plane ticket. This ticket is used to fly something called an airplane. Yeah, it flies in the sky. Once you arrive they will give you a visitor visa at the customs in Japan. And that is it.
I dont have insurance, and had a molar crack last month. It cost $780 USD to get a crown put on!!! But even with insurance it isnt cheap. My sister had to get a crown on one of her molars the month before, and even with her good insurance, it cost $550 USD! For some strange reason, dental insurance covers only a small percentage of the cost, while health insurance covers everything after you pay whatever your deductible is...

Mr.Victor how do we get to go to japan do we need a visa or something?
KidManga69 4 months ago
@KidManga69
You could swim. But since I don't know what country you're from I cannot advice you on the visa.
Gimmeaflakeman 4 months ago 8
@Gimmeaflakeman They could use Visa to charge an airline flight...or Master Card.
DavePerry2012 4 months ago
@KidManga69 It is very simple. You purchase something called a plane ticket. This ticket is used to fly something called an airplane. Yeah, it flies in the sky. Once you arrive they will give you a visitor visa at the customs in Japan. And that is it.

It's based on your income. If your salary is high so is your insurance!

I understand when you said that when your teeth are in pain you don;t want to do anything. I had a root-canal a few years ago and it was so painful.

Episode 1 of The Walking Dead season 2 was pretty rad! Though I must admit, I still prefer the graphic novels to the television show.
Glad to see that you are feeling better! Toothaches are the worst!
