The hostages in Iran were released 4 days prior to the election between Carter and Reagan. Reagan merely took credit for it.
As a matter of fact, the only thing Reagan can actually claim credit for was the Iran-Contra Affair and the war in Greneda.

The failure of the USSR was a fundamental issue that boiled over of decades of huge defense spending and failure of agriculture. It had little or nothing to do with Reagan, who simply stood by and claimed credit for something that was transpiring even before he took office.

Yes, Reagan sold Tow Missiles to Iran in exchange for getting American hostages out of Lebanon. I'm sure Carter could have freed the Embassy hostages if he had been willing to stoop low enough to sell arms to the enemy.
Then they funneled the Iranian money to the Contras in violation of the Boland Amendment, for a double header of law breaking.
