i like the rasp from the original...you can hear there is an m3 coming or leaving....but now it's like a gti or something...don't like the milltek i m sorry
I have an E46 M3. I agree. They generally sound like crap. I finally found one combo (i am sure there are more) that really sounds great. That is saying a lot because I usually cant stand 6 cylinder engine tones. I could not afford the new 8 cylinder M3 so I was very happy when I got my Borla Mid Pipe and Rogue Engineering El Diablo muffler set up. Sounds, uh, "exotic".
@bosundave You're right in it sounding exotic. I have an e46 M3 and I don't really want to switch out my exhaust as it sounds like kind of babyish you know? My bro has the borla cat back on his and it sounds like a lambo, but the sound I wish I could hav esounds like the vette or the new benz V8.
basis for your comment? i'd love to read an unbiased article that explains that even though bmw inline engines do more with less (ie: 1993 325 2.5L I6 produces 189 horsepower and performs on par with a 1993 5.0L mustang that produces 215 horsepower) but still aren't "as good"
im not taking anysides but, maybe nordsporter was talking about the exhaust, not the engine itself.. i think he meant to say, the inline engine 'exhaust' are never as good as 'v' or flat engine 'exhaust'. maybe!! but the m3 puts out alot of power for a 6 cylinder. my japanese friends are use to 6 cylinder engines putting out under 300 hps like the nsx and the skyline. but when they came to america, they couldn't believe the possibilities, but that was a while ago.
Thats only because of the gentlemens agreement which was lifted jus a bit ago. Why do u think the all jap cars pre '04 are all under 300? And all high performance coming out now are well over 300? Say ISF? but no way does a stock 5.0 mustang sound better than a bmw
Inline 6 will always beat the v6.(SUPRA,m3, and many others). Find me a NON F/I STOCK v6 that has anywhere near 333HP like a m3. YOU CANT! which makes the m3 better than any v6. DONE
That is what we are getting for M3 conv purchase last week , Headers, sec II with electronic bypass valve, makes more 30lb torque, muffler makes less than 10.
Actually i think the stock exhaust sounds better...

Got to say I liked the original rasp better than the Miltek. Was looking into getting a Miltek system but not going to bother now!

i prefer the stock one i think

Headers w/ O2 simulator should be next. If you live in Calf, keep cats on header, get el diablo rasp pipe for deep tone.
US headerCats rob you 30ft lb torque

the secound test sounded better

It is almost impossible to really hear what these set ups sound like from sound bytes. The simple revving, no load sound bytes are worthless.
I bought mine on a friend's advice.

NordSporter, are you for real ? Do you even have any basic knowledge about engines ?

Are you running an anti rasp resonator or pipe before the Milltek muffler?

well, the tips are nice...

seems like it needs to be broken in before its louder..assuming you just installed.
Hot exhaust and nice upgrade either way!

hey
i think the standard sound was better it was more piercing. millitek fucked it up a bit. dont get it twisted millitek are sick but not for the M3

Sounds awesome, I have a full Milltek system on order for my CSL so should be a nice improvement over the stock OEM system (which sounds tinny).

Are you kidding? BMW's inline-6s are some of the best sounding engines out there. I can recognize one from a mile away.
