  • the best rendition of this nice song.

  • This is such a powerful movie. This scene especially has such a contrast. So many complex emotions.

  • god i love when he sings this song. best part of the movie could watch it over n over. im in love.

  • @youngandbored1 meeeeeeeeeeee toooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! minus the whipping part >.<

  • the best f***ing version of this song! 3 hours in web and no results... if anyone has this version without the screams, pm me

  • love this version. perfectly chosen and used in the film. as haunting: the opening "happy land" photo show... eerie.

  • Filth, sweat, heat, dust, flies, pain and the sweetest song in the background of it all sung by most heartless character in the movie. EPIC!

  • Absolutely my favorite movie.

  • Yikes! Good song, disturbing scene. O_o

    *scarred for life*

  • @AlwaysThere4YouX well said!!!

  • For some reason I felt this :(

  • Jesus Christ, what a powerful scene. Watch the first :45 seconds. Somehow, that song makes all the men realize the darkness of their own hearts. Great movie.

  • He was a great singer...He was also a rapist and a homicidal murderer. The fact he was sing this while attempting to rape the police chiefs wife made me happy when charlie walked in and Blasted him in his head and blew his brains all over the wall. A well deserved death for a scumbag like that. 4 stars an 2 thumbs up.

  • 4 people are nightingales

  • that guy is such a beautiful singer and that poor guy being whipped

  • amazing performance by Mr Ray Winstone. I think he is the only actor to pull it off, quite right.

  • @ASDMarauder007 I dont think there was a poor performance in this. I think Winstone did his whole hard man thing again, but with much more depth and complexity to his character than in any previous role.

  • @grimblebrumble17889 oh no doubt. you're right about his character and his performance is electrifying in the movie

  • My name is Peggy Gordon <33

my mom used to sing this to me as a wee child

needless to say i love it

  • I think I prefer this version to The Dubliners or the Corries. This song always makes me feel terribly scottish!

  • A moving, tender rendition of a well know tune - fair play to the actor ....

  • The film is a masterclass, sheer utter brilliance

  • I certainly don't think the screams "add so much", I think it's just John Hillcoat juxtaposing the beauty of the song and serenity of the "evil outlaws" with the horrors of the "civilised society" carrying out the punishment. The screams only add to it if you're watching the film. I would very much love a version without the screams purely so I may listen to Tom Budge fucking nail it.

  • The lashing notwithstanding, this is quiet true to life - countless times in my life I"ve seen hard Irish men silenced by a beautiful song. They always respect it.

  • I watched it in the movie and it was pure delight.

On a differernt note though why does Australia have so many flies?

  • This is a very old Irish folk song that u can hear being played all the time in Irish pubs many people have covered it but this is my favorite.... Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

  • it e¿beats me why the production didnt include this song in the soundtrack

  • Is there an audio tack of this? Without the screaming, o' course.

  • GOD BLESS THE IRISH . BEAUTIFUL SONG.

  • Amazed at the cover the Melvins did of this. Beautiful.

  • best ive heard

  • Isnt that the sweetest voice you've ever heard?

Sam Stoat was the best thing about this movie.

  • goin visitin

  • The guys voice is soothing and the poem itself is good, shame they decided to splice in the whipping and screaming sound in throughout, that ruined it

  • @DarkBiggie I beg to differ, it's an excellent juxtaposition of whom is supposedly on the side of good or bad. The villains and outcasts song of lament seem way more civilized and humane than the side of good and upright citizineries cruelty and barbarism at that very moment. A very powerful scene from a great movie.

  • erm.....fair point dude, i wasnt looking that deep into it, i was just stating that its hard to enjoy such a nice poem whilst watching a guy get tortured, but good analysis

  • I totally agree with you DarkBiggie. I would listen to this song every day if it weren't for that horrible whipping. Just too painful.

  • @asmoen thnx, despite the whipping an amazing song

  • Wonderful Movie.

  • Amazing movie, and I have to say, a perfect cast.

  • sam stoats is the best version on you tube nothing else comes close even whats yer man called luke kelly

  • this cat does a "slightly" different version, at the end of the movie...

  • lol.. i liked the peggy gordon version at the end... thats wat i first tried to look up and thought this video was... :(

  • I have heard Peggy Gordon in many boston irish pubs and I love it. They skip a verse or two, but this director shows the pain of those times

  • MandyMayzy,

The song isn't yours to keep, but u can bitch about it as you see fit.

In the film, the song is delivered with gentle and beautiful melody which generates a harsh contrast against the heinous imagery. The inclusion of the song caused me to consider a provoking idea. As a species, we are at once capable of inflicting profound cruelty, and creating exquisite beauty. The movie did what any good piece of art should do: it prompted its audience to think in new and unexpected ways.

  • Yeah, you've got the right idea here.

  • wow, well you just got the whole idea without getting it. putting beauty in the midst of horror emphasizes both by contrast.

thumbs up to this movie, Danny Huston's performance was amazing. Personally I'd rather go with my brother against society, but then it's difficult to think of the psychological pressure I'd be under if my brother enjoyed watching people be tortured and constantly created that scenario.

  • Perhaps the juxtaposition of beautiful song and grisly setting illustrates the dichotomy between our lofty ideals of love and the grim realities of human conduct. I suppose each person can take what they want from it. I personally think that it was a sublime scene-- wonderful job by the director here.

  • I just watched this movie tonight, and I thought this version of Peggy Gordon was really good (as was the film).

It's one of my favourite songs sung by Luke Kelly, so I was pleased to hear it in the movie.

  • irish tis man

  • this is the most incredible recording of this song, then I looked up the lyrics because I couldn't hear the words over the movie track. The words ' where pretty birds do change their voices, and every moment a different sound' unbelievable.

Nick Cave is responsible and this actor, even the line could shame a nightingale....it's so true!

is this an Irish, or Scottish ballad. I've seen it listed as both.

  • The song is associated with Irish musicians like Luke Kelly and is now in their repetoire. Peggy Gordon is very Scottish name, which is one indicator of the origin - the song is also called Maggie Gordon. Truth is the song could be Scottish and even Canadian according to some sources. The tune is actually traditional English - Banks of the Sweet Primroses.

  • "where pretty birds do change their voices"

It sounds to me like, "little birds sing upon the branches"

  • thats a savage tune!!!

  • sad and poignant movie...the song has been one of my favorites for many years...once picked it up on Radio Erin on a Sunday afternoon from Connecticut...must have just been the airwaves that day....the Furies do a fine version of it and it's a staple of many Irish bands, but I don't recall the Clancys ever doing it...could be wrong...

  • Could shame a Nightingale indeed. Brilliant & lovely. I hate how other artists try to speed it up. This is how it is intended to be hear minus the screams.

  • I've actually got a version that's slowed down and it is incredible! Absolutly amazing, even. I don't remember who it's by though...

  • @wiseguy400 No, i think the screams a air of realism to the song. I can imagine a score of Irish men working in a potato field while an English gentleman beats them with a wittling stick. Ah yes...music to my ears....

  • I always watch this film and "Three Burials..." together. Don't know why. I do the same with "The Woodsman" and "The Machinist".

This scene always makes me well up.

  • I would very much like this audio tack, though with out the screaming.

  • @DariusMidnite

    watch?v=22eK8oE5YYk

  • @DariusMidnite

    the screaming adds so much

  • @CuntxKicker WOW what an obvious rebellious thing to say...fuckin loser......."the screaming adds so much"

  • @DariusMidnite I know its a shame nick cave never put it on the soundtrack, the actor does an amazing job of it. My fathers favourite to sing.

  • This is a great, great movie. ....An exploration of the gray areas in life, not just good or evil. Nick Caves music is haunting.

  • that was such a harsh scene.

    great movie.

  • Comment removed

  • this movie, 'good bad ugly' and the unforgiven are the best westerns ever made.

hillcoat is a brilliant director and i cannot wait for 'the road' to come out.

    respect to nick cave to

  • Brilliant scene

  • Absolutely beautiful, gorgeous movie

  • this is greatness

  • You could shame a Nightingale.....

  • What I got from this scene was that the bad guys became good and the good guys became bad. Mikey was being whipped and it's obvious that Standley didn't want this to happen and after awhile everyone was feeling some bit of remorse for Mikey.

While the whipping was going on, Sam was singing Peggy Gordon beautifully and you could see how all of them looked so innocent and calm.

So that's what I got from watching that scene. Wonderful movie to watch.

  • This scene broke my heart

  • this is eerily pretty...maybe because of the awful violence in the background... and the voice itself is almost androgynous. I imagine a sylph would sound like this, but the character sure is one creepy dude lol!

  • It's meant to display at once the beauty and the horrors of humanity, which is why it's juxtaposed with the brutal torture scene.

  • could shame me!

  • I found some more info its Tom Budge !

  • Can anyone please tell me what the name of the actor is ?

  • i don't know if better than Luke Kelly or even Paddy Reilly....but i think the totality of this scene is so powerful and moving. Great Job all around on this film, the score and song selection mates.

  • OMG! I wish I could get this recording just by itself!

  • I KNOW! It's not on the soundtrack. Is it on ANYTHING? Does anybody have any info on the availability of this song?

  • Tom Budge has his own band and they have a MySpace page, but it only provide their original music. I want 'this' version of Peggy Gordon from Tom....and it irks me that they wouldn't put this on the soundtrack. I wanted the soundtrack until I found out that 'Peggy Gordon' wasn't included.

  • one of my favourite movie moments... from a list of literally undreds an fousands.....

    thanx 4 posting...

  • best australian film ever....and why do the irish always have to be the bad asses lol....Ned Kelly...these dudes.....gangs of new york...the departed..the wind that shakes the barley many more i am sure

  • One of the finest scenes in Australian cinema

  • better than luke kelly....i dont think so guys

  • While it IS indeed a gorgeous rendition of this song, comparing it to Luke Kelly's version is just asking for trouble. Debates of "which is the best" when it comes to art should be saved for idiots. Don't be idiots, people. Luke Kelly's version is beautiful, and this one is beautiful as well.

  • When I first saw this movie, I had to wait for about three hours for it to come on again later that day, just so I could hear this song again. By far, it's the best version of it I have ever heard... in my opinion it's even better that Luke Kelly.

  • i love this song ,,, andv the film is amezing ,,

  • Thanks. He says that with such intense eyes. Great film! Nick Cave is an amazing storyteller.

  • What does Arthur Burns say after the song?

  • you could shame a nightingale

  • Does anyone have the download link to this version? I mean MP3 or something?

  • Ive been looking for one but cant seem to find it... let me know if you do!

  • i think he is an australian singer and what a lovely version. its not often you can say someone did a better vrsion than luke kelly, but i think they managed it

  • Such beauty coming from such a hideous person...Nick Cave is a genius !

  • the beauty of this song is made even more poignant because of the violence in this film, and the character singing the song with such a beautiful voice is one of the most violent in the film.

  • it's funny though he only sings that song in the two most gruesome scenes in the movie.

  • Amazing i love this song! i feel it everytime i listen to it! i think peggy done the dirt on him! Bitch! Sam Stoat could shame a floke of nighingale.

  • Thanks for posting. The song has been drifting to mind since I saw the film.

  • it's pretty amazing that this guy is from australia

  • are you suggesting australians can't sing, or are you are you amazed there are actually people that live in australia

  • hahahahhahahahhaha good one chief...

  • whats that supposed to mean rowstyles?

  • He probably meant it's amazing because he isn't Irish or Scottish or whatever.

  • hmm yeah, though he's possibly of irish descent.

  • Well I can't say whether or not the actor's Irish, but his character was supposed to be.

  • he does a damn good job of it though

  • i guess i meant, great acting job. he's an australian so obviously he doesn't have the kind of emotional ties to this song that a boy who grew up hearing it would

  • fair enough lol

  • The juxtaposition between the lyrics about love and the complete lack of it among these supposedly righteous people is very powerful. It's a shame this isnt on the soundtrack.

  • It's a damn shame you can't get his version on CD. I would really like to hear it without the screams of the whipping in the background. The contrast is powerful between the beauty of the song and the horrid cries of the man being beaten, but I don't want to hear the cries every time I listen! Someone told me it's not on the soundtrack. Forshame!

  • starkly beautiful indeed

  • What a good movie. Very different kind of movie, and i was surprised how nice this guy sounded singing this.

  • anyone know where i can stream "the rider" from the same movie? the one with the angry electric guitar...

  • he could shame a nightengale

  • i wish i was away in ingo far across the briny sea

  • a great movie...sadly underated

  • This is definitly the best version of Oh Peggy Gordon. I wish it was on the soundtrack.

  • so stunning

  • goddamed!

  • Absolutely stunning...this is film making at its best.

  • It is violent. Doesn't make it any less touching, but it is violent. I won't bother to flag it, however.

  • The best version of this song. Beautiful. Puts all the over sugared/over produced other celtic stuff to shame.

Anyone know why it wouldn't be on the soundtrack? I would have bought it if it had been.

    Can I download it anywhere?

  • beautiful song stunning

  • Sarahsbooks sucks go watch the bradey bunch its far more eye friendly for your sort

  • Fuck you sarahbooks you stupid bitch

  • LOOK, that is what it was like in 800's Australia! British rule made flogging a normal everyday thing, they also executed them in front of children! That was what life was back then, it is true to history!

  • GREAT FUCKIN MOVIE one of my favorite movies ever, sarah if you think this is violent, the song plays again at the end and you who watched it know what im talkin about

  • at the end of the movie, can you hear the song without the screams? or is it something even more horrible in the background?

  • does anyone think i should flag this?

  • For what, violence? Are you the internet police?

  • The dual display of beauty and the violence is the whole point of the scene. If you don't like it, then don't watch it.

  • Why did you flag it? It's people like you that are shitting up this site.

  • Anyway this could be downloaded somewhere?

  • this film rocks!

  • ...."not quite up to Luke Kelly's level though"....

....Maybe not ( Kelly does kind of "belt" it out in his version) but this version shows what a fine actor with a fine voice can do with a great song. Far more expression of regret and sadness here.

  • The movie was so powerful - one of our best Australian productions.

The version of Peggy Gordon very well done - not quite up to Luke Kelly's level though.

  • verse 5

I wish I was in some lonesome valley

Where womankind can not be found

Where the pretty small birds do change their voices

And every moment a different sound

  • verse 3

I did put my head to a cask of brandy

It was my fancy I do declare

For when I'm drinking I am thinking

And wishing Peggy Gordon was here I wish I was away in Ingo

    Far across the briny sea

    Sailing o'er the deepest ocean

Where love nor care never bother me

  • Oh, Peggy Gordon you are my darling

Come sit you down upon my knee

Come tell to me the very reason

Why I am slighted so by thee

I'm so in love I can't deny it

My heart lies smothered in my breast

It's not for you to let the world know it

A troubled mind can know no rest

    I

  • I love this film and this song, I'm so glad someone put this scene up I was desperate for it.

    I love you x

  • I think I am the sick one. Getting excited at a man having his back whipped so fiercly

  • Hands down, the best western ever made.

  • This has got to be one of the greatest westerns of all time. :)

  • So movingly naked and hauntingly beautiful. All other copys of this song are horribly overproduced. This steam is the best even with the screaming.

  • All other copies of this song I've been able to find are dreadfully overproduced when it's the spare nakedness of this one that makes it so moving. Wish I could hear it without the flogging but even with the lash and screaming it's better than anything else I can find.

  • disgusting- ruined a perfectly beautiful whipping scene :)

  • Just Audio

  • Is there anyway, or anywhere I can download this??

  • This is one of my favorite scenes ever. Such beautiful singing. I just walked through the night time empty streets of Oxford singing this.

    x

  • Absolutely gorgeous rendition of a timeless song. Great movie too.

  • Too bad it's not on the films soundtrack, brilliant scene.

  • awesome scene from an awesome film

  • Been looking for this for a long time. Thanks!
