I honestly LOVE Smitty's rendition of this song!!!! Yes, Carpark North's is great, too, and obviously that's why Smitty wanted to do a cover of it. C'mon, I'd say after 30 years in music, he should be free to cover other music if the original artist permits him to. And...considering what an honor it is for a music legend to cover your music (and he HAS acknowledged their name in other interviews, FTR), I don't think they would be anything but happy! Just enjoy it for what it is, people!
Wow. It's funny...I fell out of love with smitty's music once I started going to college. When I heard this one in a bookstore I was blown away! I couldn't believe it when somebody told me it was him. Turns out, after listening to Carpark North's original, that it was their writing and chord progressions I was responding to at the store. Sorry Smitty, I still think you are brilliant but I am waiting for you to break out of that evangelical-sounding cast you've got yourself set in. Keep trying.
@InYourPresence fair enough...I guess it just really bother's me when "up and coming" artists don't get the respect they deserve. I think Michael W. Smith is a fantastic artist, but he was the last person I would have chose to cover this song, and to top it off, doesn't even mention Carpark North. Not too classy, but that's just my opinion. I still got respect for ol' mws.
there's no direspect in taking the song at all. I come from Denmark and on our Christian school we use carpark norths song as worship. its about, who you're dedicating the song to. And I think it's great that Michael W. Smith brings it to many other countries for serving God!
I competely disagree with you. There are several artists who "cover" regional songs and release them. For example, the Carpenter recorded "Close To You" and it became a standard for them. Richard Chamberlain recorded it in 1963.
This song will become more popular because MWS recorded it. Enjoy both bands who recorded it.
@RevBlood I totally agree with you! very disrespectful. He just knows as soon as everyone hears Carpark's version, the only version, they will never listen to this again.
Jeez, the least thing you could do, would be to tell people you made a cover song (As it is not just a "new record", but a cover.), and tell them who originally made it (And not just wrote it - Played it excellent too)
This is just disrespectful.. At least tell people Carpark North did it first, before releasing it as something that was "written by someone in Denmark"?
No need for this song to be remade anyway.. Really. Carpark North did it just fine.
@RevBlood Maybe MWS should mentioned the band's name. However,Carpark North didn't mind the re-make& gave the consent&was glad MWS did it.No one could take credits away from original composer-they wrote a good song. & if MWS could take a good song&make a good Christian song to carry a message, more power to him!Christian brothers&sisters, celebrate success of each others, for God's glory is the ultimate goal.give others 'Benefit of the doubt',try not to take every opportunity to knock them down.
@CJoanLin That's great, but the path to the goal means something too. And yes he can take the credit, watch the video - No credit were given to Carpark North, and no one would know who made this song, if we weren't commenting on it. That being said, i don't mind him making the cover, and i know christians will love the lyrics. I'd just wish he would mention who made it first. I don't want to knock him down, but if i was in a band and made a good song, i would hate being "the guys in Denmark".
@RevBlood No, sir. He can't take the credit&he didn't.I bought the 'Wonder' CD. The song is the 1st one & under the title it said 'Lo Hojen, Soren Balsner, Morten Thorharuge'. all CarPark North members. It's the law that one gives song composer credit & in the print under tis song, MWS' name isn't there, even he sings the song. I own most of his CDs, DVDs and song books-All songs are properly credited.Check it out.On this video,he didn't mentioned the band name, it is an interview & oversight.
@RevBlood Have U ever been in the public place&wish U have mentioned something &U didn't.Have U ever said things U wish u didn't.I have, more than once.In this case,he did'nt mentioned the Band's name.I will give U that. It would have been better if he did, absolutely.MWS is a great Christian song writer, singer &he inspires many.we need more MWS.So I say let's give him a bit of room,he earned it -it was an oversight but not a terrible mistake like some would try to make it seems 2 B.I esteem MWS!
@RevBlood How many people still think "Agnus Dei" is a Third Day song??? I'll bet you quite a few. There's nothing wrong with a music legend making his or her rendition of someone else's song...especially, after they have approved of it! And despite what you may personally feel about this video, Smitty has been very respectful of the song and the group, and I along with many others, are QUITE HAPPY with his rendition!
@iamthemallard Nothing wrong in making cover songs, heck, i have whole albums with just covers. Even if I liked this rendition, it doesn't change the fact that this video nearly presents the song as his own. And sure, great he got permission to use it. But I'd still feel shat on if i lent someone my creation and they went "Hey look at this cool thing i made!". He fails to mention "Cover" and "Carpark North". That doesn't mean you and others can't like his rendition. Feel free.
