  • Who recorded this, why couldn't they keep the camera focused on the performances on the stage instead of the sign. Disappointing.

  • This show gives me goosbumps. Perfection on broadway.

  • Loretta Devine was the BEST Lorrell

  • I just want to take a minute to acknowledge Mr. Ben Harney, who I think has NEVER been beaten as Curtis, in both his explosive, passionate acting and his superb, clear, soulful vocals.

  • Does anyone else wish they had written in just one more fight scene to this sequence?

  • why didnt they put this song in the movie? im sure alot of people were mad at that change

  • @fry12341 , technically, the song is in the film, just not the sung-thru dialogue.

  • mann in the movie this was my favorite scene and song from the movie soundtrack!! so for me to hear the song in its entirety from the stage play is just great for me lol to really the arguement and all the emotion that really came from all the drama and how it was beginning to effect the performances is just pure gold!! If only I could have seen this play in its hayday to badd im so young lol

  • I like the change they made, Effie stealing the solo reads SO much better than her just standing there.

  • @Selendomono Agreed, it makes alot more sense... In the original Boston tryout of the show, after the final warning of "Stop bringing us down", Deena and Lorrell go on to sing Heavy w/o Effie...

  • I like how they did this on stage a lot.. I've heard many complaints about how the movie did this which, I understand but I still think they did a really good job with this show. I just wish they chose someone that had more of a powerful voice rather than an amazing range. But Hey, I guess its one or the other. Still lovable.

  • @KitanaiBaishunfu I don;t think anybody could really live up to holliday's sheer vocal strength :/

But Hudson did do a really good job.

  • Hopefully they don't change this song in the new REVIVAL that's out now.

  • @screenhorrahfan I like how it is in the revival. The changes to me are minimal. just a bit of blocking, costumes are a little different and the use of the LED panels but I loved this scene in the new show...

  • @Marcosdastar how do they do it

  • @jenard20 the LED are used like t.v. recording monitors, kinda like in the movie. I think it was a pretty creative idea. I wish someone would post the new touring video for you to see what I mean. It added a new element to it...

  • @Marcosdastar I have a bootleg of the new cast, and honestly, I feel like the dancing, is too 'hip hop' and not very feminine...Shane Sparks was a poor choice to choreograph, One Night Only (Dreams version) Looks like a damn Ciara video, It's the 70's for gods sake... The blocking is all wrong and slightly amateurish. Sometimes the shift between the Dreams performance and the backstage scenes are awkward, especially during Heavy you lose some of the effect and Drama.

  • They still go up on that costume change and the one with Effie singing I Am Changing. Enjoyed this though I'm a little dizzy now. rofl

  • I love the musical and I'm so glad you posted this so those of who didn't see the original can witness the magic!

Oh I would've loved to have seen the Jennifer, Sheryl and Loretta as the Dreams!

  • Gosh I wish I could have seen this show live!

  • Hey Everyone! I have Vogue Sequence and a Clip from Cadillac Car in my channel!

  • You know how when effie walks off in the first part and deena and lorell follow, how theyre voices play over them while they go? Did they lipsynch the whole song or did they like start at a certain part?

  • what?

  • Some of the backing....they tried to make it seem like they were at a real tv show tapping.....but think it maybe company as well

  • i know that but im wondering if they lipsynched the entirety of the song or if they just stoped singing at a certain line to get the effect

  • No....just the background vocals...I have the soundboard and Sheryl does different ab-libs

  • They lip synched it, so that when Effie runs off, the song keeps playing so it looks as if the were actually on a tv show and the song would keep playing...

  • im so upset dat dey re-did dis scene in da movie. dey should have kept it like dis. nd im also mad dey took out da song ain't no party...da song lorell sings 2 jimmie before he goes on stage 2 sing i meant u no harm.

  • Could you please write in English!

  • GET IT LORETTA!

  • i wish they did this version in the film. i love when effie rips on deena during this section.

  • i wish the shuberts would let us see this :(

  • its not hr same in the film...Effie argues more with Curtis than Deena in the film...unlike here the argument is between Effie Deena and Lorell

  • I agree, this is GOLD!!!

  • you should be thankful your even watching this, its broadway Gold!

  • I so wished this would have been faithfully added to the movie! And don't get me started on the costumes!

  • You said a mouthful. People always argue that the scene WAS kept in the movie, but they changed it so much (by making it a recording session) that it doesn't resemble this at all. I worked as an usher during a run of this show, and the singing backstage fight- as well as the stunning 4-second costume change- always excited the audiences. Oh, well...

  • I love this... it's such a shame they cut it outta the movie.... i blame beyounce.... i'm kidding.. but no they should not have cut it out

  • Wow!You were an usher?!Did you see Julia McGirt play Effie? Is she as dynamic as I remember?I was on a school trip and had no idea that I was so fortunate to see her - one of the best Effies ever.

  • No, I ushered at National Theatre, when the 1987 touring company came to DC. Sharon Brown was Effie (and did very well), Deborah Burrell was Deena, and the curvaceous Arnetia Walker was Lorrell. But this original staging of "Heavy" looked so much more like what we would've seen of the Supremes on "Ed Sullivan" or "Hollywood Palace," down to those sheer evening gowns. And the quick-change when they're suddenly in San Francisco ALWAYS got roars from the audience.

  • Even better!I saw Sharon do Effie 4 times & I must say she acted the mess out that role!!Sharon & Arnetia used to tear "Heavy" up don't you think?Sharon is my fave Effie (not counting Jen Holliday).

  • Does anyone have video of THAT cast? I know it was up here a couple of years ago, but only for a short while. I'd love to hear Sharon in the role!!!!!

  • Sharon was the bomb! I'd pay top dollar for a copy of that cast. I'd read on the official Dreamgirls site that the archived video in the Lincoln Center (NYC) is the cast from '87. You must request special permission to view and they are very precious about who they'll allow to do so.

  • Why do they do that? It's a show that isn't running anymore and yet they're trying to keep people from seeing it. Complete and utter bullshit!!!!!!!!!

  • @gerodh The video is the cast from 85

  • gerodh @youndatmonkee: Do you know who featured in that archived '85 cast?

  • @gerodh I don't know the exact cast, but I know some in the know and it is the 85 cast, Deena can be anyone from Linda Leilani Brown to Deborah Burrell, I am in question as to who was doing Deena in the end, LLB did Deena from mid 84' until pretty late into the run in 85, but I am still not sure I have a recording from 85 and can;t figure it out... Terry was prolly Michelle, Ms. Loretta Devine... Lorrell... Mr. Ben Harney... Curtis and Roz Ryan as Effie... Now these are all wild guesses

  • Yes I was just wondering about that I would LOOOVE to see Sharon in that role! Footage has got be somewhere, could someone pllllleease post it!

  • THE BEST!!!

  • i dont understand why you would tease people like this, there are so many people who would die to see the whole production and you have it and cant share it,I thought i would never ever see move(your steppin on my heart)so thank you so much, but to have these amazing clips and not let us see the whole production is cruel, please upload the whole thing, maybe even for a limited time but please!Be a true Dreamgirls fan!

  • the only thing i dont' exactly love about this is that early in the run after the infamous costume change, they just have effie not sing. i'm glad they made the much more effective change of having her sing deena's solo.

  • can somebody tell what does Deena say about at 1:39

  • the actual line at 1:39 is "wait a minute Dewight". It's to to the stage manager for the Dreams [inside] of the play.

  • why didn't they have this song on the obc album?

  • beacuse David Geffen wanted the album to sell like a pop record; and thought a double album would'nt have sold as much(and with ALL the songs deleted, it would've been a double)

  • And it is a rarely known fact that Geffen was not a big fan of this number (OMG, B/C IT IS MY FAV)... And he actually financially backed the movie and there was talks of completely deleting this scene from the movie, b/c he disliked it so much...

  • Wow, how could he not like this number!? The infamous 5 second quick change... you can see Jennifer unfastening her dress at 2:42.

  • Damn, I wish Micheal Bennett were still alive. He would've transfered this to the big screen IN TACT. No cuts or unnessacery changes like most of what ended up in the film. What a loss!!!!!!!

  • @summerholliday44 the most ironic thing about that is, now a days when a double album is released, it counts as two and you are more likely to get a gold or platinum album... I think one of the biggest travesties in Broadway history is not having an actual studio recording of the complete OBC. I feel with Dreamgirls, it would have been complicated to release every song on an album without recording the whole show. Just because, there are so many 'backround' songs...

  • a god sound man can take the voices and remix them so that they wil sound more powerful and rich, it can be done

  • i have this whole DVD. someone sold it to me for only 20 bucks. i don't understand how JesusFan is selling it for 200. I would refer the man's username if I can find it (or if he's on YouTube)

  • woo can i borrow it

  • can u please upload the video on google? I'd be happy to pay you thirty!

  • I've also bought several broadway shows on DVD for $20 from a man. Did he happen to be located in Massachusetts?

  • Is there any way I could get a copy? How much would you want for it?

  • what scene was made - it made no sense to have the second verse with effie just being so sweet the second time around - the change later on in the tour made more sense than this but you can't beat the orginal divas nor the magic of broadway

  • The scene Effie is making is by not singing at all, she just stands and defiantly grins...

  • yeah - but it's not as pronounced as her making an outright scene - but you do have a point - usually when someone makes a scene it's outright ....

  • they made a lot of changes to the script from opening night to the road show to add to the drama, and fill out the characters motives. Effie interrupting Deena was just one of those changes...

  • The only thing that upsets me about this HEAVY Version is that the HEAVY video here on Youtube w/ Frenchie Davis in it is a bit better. Effie interrupts Deena's singing there (overpowering Deena's voice) and that leads to the 2nd backstage battle. I still think the OBC is still better though. Nobody can beat them!

  • Before i beg some more, i think you (summerholliday44) are the one who posted a video of this HEAVY before. It was long ago and i was scouring YOUTUBE for clips of Dreamgirls OBC and i found it and actually, this vid was longer before because before, after HEAVY, DRIVING DOWN THE STRIP was shown and a short confrontation of C.C. and Deena in the dressing room when Jimmy arrived was also included (they were bickering about Effie's DIVA attitude and C.C. is defending her).

  • The DVD of this show is way to expensive for me! I Can't afford it! i'll be very glad to watch all of these clips instead even though it's not in good quality. Please POST The WHOLE SHOW!

  • I'm EXTREMELY DESPERATE (a trillion times!) to see the whole production! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease post the whole musical 'cause i can't afford to buy the DVD (JesusFan is selling it for $200! too expensive for me!)! It's okay if the video's not really good but i will ABSOLUTELY appreaciate it and i will very much treasure it like my life. PS., T.Y. for posting these amazing clips for HUGE & DIEHARD fans like me! i appreciate it VERY MUCH!

  • why didn't Effie interupt deena to start the 2nd arguement?

  • Because originally she was just supposed to not sing. You might not notice it too much, but she's actually just standing there smiling. They changed it in later productions.

  • Still my favorite scene from the show! Thanks for posting this.

  • Hey, i know you have a lot of demands for certain parts of the play but can you please post stepping to the bad side and fake your way to the top, i would be extremely greatful, you rock!

  • Wow.. we have so much to thank Michael Bennett for..

SummerHolliday thanks so much for posting this. Would you by any chance have Michael Bennett's masterpiece "Step into the Bad Side"..

  • I have the whole musical. I love that number....when i watch Steppin to the Bad Side, with that great dancin(and singing) I feel like "....that's Broadway!" cream of the crop.

  • I know right? It's so fascinating!

  • my favorite scene. please post one night only disco version.

  • Thank you for posting these. Its so refreshing.

  • I agree completely with your "about this video": Michael Bennett was truly revolutionary in his ideas. Nothing short of magic.
