  • im pretty ready!

  • WOW..you made me relaod my sonar.. : )

  • Good stuff, nice job! ;)

  • thank you for taking your time to make a video to help other that's cool

  • @Crazysoulrecords

    Ok perhaps I'll remove it.

But wait - 21,000 views and nobody else had a problem.

Maybe I'll let it ride for now

    Sorry it didn't help you.

  • Sorry but I don't know what FX comes with 7 xl.

But you can still make an improvement. First make sure its in tune. Then you will want some compression to even out the volume of the vocal performance and make it all uniform. Then use some EQ if needed. Finally a little reverb might help to make it sound pollished.

    Good luck

  • I meant 7 xl

  • If not, what effect can I use with 7am that might enhance vocals?

  • Does sonar 7xl have vc64? I can't find it.

  • is this sonar 6 producer

  • @donniebangout

No, this is Sonar 8 Producer edition - very similar

  • @dustypuppy If I want to eliminate echo and make my mic in-sync with my voice, how do I go about doing that? And also, Sonar 8 keeps cutting off on me, how do I go about keeping the audio running so that it won't drop(or cut off)

  • @kjchicago1

Using the input echo is called "software monitoring". If you want to get around that you need to use Hardware Monitoring. This simply means using a mixing board or some way to hear the signal from the hardware instead of relying on the software. I have a mixer set up so I hear the sound of my mic thru the headphones as I am recording.

If your audio is dropping out heres a few things to try.

Update drivers for your sound card - be sure to use the newest.

    Set the latency higher

  • @dustypuppy When you say latency, can you find that on Sonar 8?

  • @kjchicago1

Yes - go to Options / Audio / General Tab - you'll see a slider for latency

  • @dustypuppy Have you tried the new Sonar? Sonar X1?

  • @kjchicago1

No but it looks awesome eh

  • @dustypuppy It does look awesome! Also, be sure to try the Sonar V-100!

  • @dustypuppy Oops, Sorry about that! What I meant was be sure to try out the Sonar V-Studio 100!

  • Thank you so much this is actually exactly what I needed. I used your tips and now my vocals sound crisp :O)

  • @one100gs

    Nice :)

  • Hi, Healthy 2011 to you.

I notice that when I activate that "effect Send" button (where it says POST), whatever is on the channel sounds more present without me adding any FX. Why? Thx

  • @adomayor Hi - Thank you

The FX send makes it sound that way because it is adding a second signal, which seems to boost the overall volume. Notice if you turn down the send's volume, things will return to normal.

Unlike your INSERT FX (fx bin in each track) the sends simply add this second sound (usually with FX) to your existing mix.

    Good luck

  • @dustypuppy how do you make the voacls louder?

  • @tag1989

Highlight the vocal clip and go to Process / Audio / Gain. Use one of the presets, for example 3dB Boost.

    good luck

  • @dustypuppy thanx it works...but in your proccess effects/audio effects what are your settings? cause right now my voice sounds like im talking into a mic. btw I have sonar 6 and would you recommend a filter ?

  • @tag1989

First, you need to use a good mic - then I suggest you experiment with the FX you have available. My audio fx will look different than sonar 6 because I use version 8.

  • can I have song title and artist name please..

  • @DevorathROM

Her name is DJ, she lives in Holland and the song is called "just being jealous".

Sorry I don't know more than that but we never met. We only did this song via the internet and just for fun.

  • Hi, I have a question about panning. I have some tracks recorded as mono and want to use the panning automation. When 100% right panning the audio gets killed for that track in sonar. However after I export the audio mixdown, I hear the panning to R. Bottomline is what I hear in sonar isn't the same as what I hear in Media player after creating a wav file. All my outputs are routed to Master which goes into the ASIO out. Do you have an idea on what needs to be set correctly in this case? Thanks

  • @aldada13 Actually I was able to figure it out. The ASIO outputs from master was routed incorrectly. Now my mix sounds like my actual output.

  • Thanks for your reply. I have EMU 1616m and had problems since the beginning with the preamps. The in-built phantom power supply was really bad and I had to buy an aftermarket phantom power just to get rid of the horrible crackling noise from my mic. I have tried changing the latency and gain but haven't been able to fix the issue. But based on your feedback, I will keep looking. Thanks again.

  • Hi I'm having some trouble getting my guitar to sound good in my recordings. I tried both electric and electro-acoustic guitars to get a clean non distorted sound and I couldn't get any, the best sound I got was using a condenser mic. Is there any specific plugins that you'd recommend for guitars other than Guitar Rig LE ? Also with vocals, how do you remove the hissing sound from the mic? I found that using vx_64 vocals' expander worked well but I was wondering if there's a better idea. Thx :)

  • @aldada13

    Hi

There seems to be some problem with your equipment.

When we record electric or accoustic guitar "direct in" or with a mic, it should be as clean and clear as can be. Also when you record and play back vocals there should be no hiss at all.

So even though there are ways to clean up the signal after the fact, you need to try to get a clearer signal to start with.

I expect you need a better sound card or audio interface, but perhaps it might be just something in the settings.

  • lol thats alright i found the problem and now it is fixed! yaayy! and umm how can i get that program u use to convert MP3s ????

  • @dustypuppy i belive it was the SoundForge lol

  • i have one question.... how can i equalize the sound on my mixer, so that when i sing into it, and press the space bar when done, i dont have to fiddle around with the trimming and the main volume on the track? should i raise all the volume on the mixer, including the master volume and the track volume???? because when i usually record a song, i always have to raise the volume after on the program.

  • @LatinKorpz

This just takes practice and its a matter of getting used to your equipment. Anyone who sings might have a different volume. Its important to do some adjustments and tests to be sure you have a good volume level before you begin to record.

Its better to have a week signal you can boost later than to have it too hot so it clips or distorts

    Good luck

  • @dustypuppy hey! it's me again. sorry. ummmm okay. now. say that i've finished recording a song, and when i export it, and listen to it, i sounds like the volume is increasing and decreasing all on its own, and it doesnt sound like the way it would play on the program, the volume level goes back and forth as if it were modulated or an effect was added but nothings there. why is that???

  • @LatinKorpz

Hey - that sounds strange; theres something wrong there. You mean it sounds different than it did when you played it in Sonar?

Burn a CD and play it on some other computer or in your car or some other CD player. (just as a test) I believe this might be a wierd problem with your media player. -I have seen this happen before.

  • @dustypuppy okay. when i export the file, it doesn't let me export it as an Mp3 format. only WAV. now. when i play the song i exported on Windows Media Player, it gives me that wierd sounds as if the volume was being changed up and down repeatedly. nut, when i play the song on a different program (for e.g ITunes or Creative Media Source Player) it sounds perfect! but here's the thing. when i convert the song which is a WAV file to an MP3 file and listen to it, i still get the same problem =s

  • @LatinKorpz

Wow this is really nutty hey ?

Its obviously a problem with WindowsMediaPlayer. And what program do you use to convert it to MP3?

  • @dustypuppy uhh i downloaded it off the Internet. its called, "Blaze Media Pro"

  • @LatinKorpz

OK; I use BLAZE too for some disk burning but not for converting MP3s. For that I use SoundForge. But I think you must experiment with other decoders till you find the problem.

Sorry I am not much help here.

    good luck

    Dwight

  • Good Video, Thanks

  • i cant find v vocal why every time i right click it never works some one plz help me

  • ok i see. thanks a lot dustypuppy.

  • oh i see. so for this clip did you adjust the amount of reverb too or just keep it the same as large hall?

  • @voiceofexpression

When you place an effect in the FX SEND, you can leave it at 100%

But on each audio track, you can now adjust the amount of signal going to that reverb. Notice on the vocal track, I have "Effects Send 1" turned on and I have it adjusted to -19.0. You can slide this green slider up or down but at 0 it would be too much reverb.

  • @dustypuppy hey dustypuppy i did what u told me to do...however, i happen to have some echo sounds from the vocal. and it doesnt sound like the lady singing here...is it because of different mics?

  • @voiceofexpression

I don't understand - there should be no echo unless you added it. There in a little icon on each track called "input echo". Be sure that is off or this could cause an echo sound as you're recording.

  • @dustypuppy hmmm...i still dont know why as well...i was wondering, is it possible to record vocals with effects at the same time? if so, how do i do that?

  • @voiceofexpression

If you place an effect (reverb for example) in the FX Bin of an audio track, arm it for recording and turn on "input echo' then you will hear the fx while recording. You need a soundcard with near zero latency in order to take advantage of this. Otherwise the delay is too much. But in this example, the reverb didn't actually get recorded. Afterwards you can turn off that reverb and you'll see your vocal was still recorded "dry" (no fx)

    I hope this helps

  • @dustypuppy yes this help me a lot. but i was wondering, i checked in audio in sonar 8 and it says 2 latency but cant switch it anymore and im using ASIO...are there by any chance that i can switch 2 latency to 0 latency? because the 2 latency still has some delays when i tried to record with the reverb effects.

  • @voiceofexpression

I think if you're using ASIO, you might be able to set things differently in the control panel of your sound card. What sound card or audio input device are you using ?

  • @dustypuppy i use a cakewalk UA-25ex interface and it was highly recommended to use ASIO by some people. any suggestions?

  • @voiceofexpression

I also suggest ASIO is best when you have hardware like this which can handle it. I have never used one of these UA-25ex but they look great to me. This UA-25ex must have its own "contol panel" software where you can make some more settings. Bear in mind you can only have "near zero" latency. The delay will always be noticable by fussy ears. This is why HARDWARE monitoring is best. (ei. using a mixing board)

Are you using XP, Vista or Windows7 ?

  • @dustypuppy im using xp. hey dustypuppy, in this video, is that all u need to mix and master the vocal recording?

  • @voiceofexpression yes I think so :)

  • @dustypuppy ok...just a regular comment from the bottom of my heart. I think you're a very generous man. you don't even ask for money to teach me how to fix the vocals. many musicians I've known will always ask money first in order for them to teach me how to use sonar, cubase, pro tools and so for. thanku very much.

  • @voiceofexpression --Your post is old, but I'm just now seeing it. Your problem is that you can't record with reverb on a computer. It has to be added aftewards. It's impossible to get 0 latency, but your 2 is super good. As long as it's under 10, you can work, around 4 is pretty ideal. But the reverb will always echo if you try to add it as you record. Gotta add it to a recorded track, not while you record it.

  • @rbowser11 yea i realized that. thanks anyway.

  • so is this sonar 7 or sonar 8? and was it the lexicon reverb that you were using in this video? if so, what are your adjustments for the lexicon? for example, in the lexicon it says mix. should i put like 20% or like 40%? great video here. thanks

  • hi voiceofexpression

    This was Sonar 8 PE.

Yes I did use the lexicon in this video - you hear it at 02:01

I used the preset called "Large Hall". I can adjust the amount of reverb from the slider on the strip because the lexicon is placed in the FX Send 1 as seen after 02:18

    I hope this helps

    Dwight

  • when recording ,do you suppose to hear yourself in the headphones or just the music?

  • Hi taddison2

You need to hear yourself in the headphones. When using a mixer, you can do this by turning up the volume on that strip. This is called hardware monitoring.

Otherwise, turn on "input echo' for the track you're recording in SONAR so your recorded voice comes thru the headphones or speakers. This is Software Monitoring and you will notice a delay (or echo) unless you have a sound card capable of near zero latency.

    Dwight

  • when i record my vocals it like crap when i play it in the car. HOw can i fix the problems?

  • @taddison2

    Singing lessons ?

    Sorry I'm joking :-)

Everyone seems to hate the sound of their own vocals. But if its in tune and in time and sung with emotion, it might not be so bad.

What seems to be the problem?

  • I can't tell you how understandable you have made Sonar for me. thanks in large part to your tutorials, I'm finally at the point where I can concentrate on creating as opposed to learning the technology. All the best to you.

  • thats awesome :)

    thanks very much

  • you' re very welcome . let keep music Up forever.

  • nice video

  • thank you :)

  • @dustypuppy Say you want to record the music sound track and your voice at the same time? How do you do that?

  • @kjchicago1

That would depend on how you have things set up. I have a multi tracking setup with 8 ins and outs so its easy for me to do that on 2 different tracks. But with a basic sound card you would need to use the right and left inputs. Then again the soundtrack will be stereo so that is no good . . .

Why not put the soundtrack in first, then sing it.

Highlight an audio track and go to File / Import / Audio and brouse for soundtrack.

Then setup an audio track to record your voice :)

  • Dwight, should all vocals be routed to MASTER and MASTER only?

  • Yes, I think its safe to say always and only. Then use an aux bus if you want to add something else - like reverb to the signal.

    I hope this helps

  • what do you have your lexicon set on? i'm having problems making my vocals clear..I dont know what all the effects to use on my vocals..what you run through your master bus ,metronome and effect send?

  • Here, I inserted the Lexicon into the "effect send" bus. I often use the "Large Hall" preset on the Lexicon. But adjust the send from your track so you don't get too much.

Also experiment with the VC64 if you have that.

The Metronome bus should be used only for the metronome. (you can add more busses if you need them)

The Master bus is where you can adjust the over-all level of the song. Also you can insert mastering effects into this strip.

  • Good video! I have a question for you. How do you slice audio in Sonar. I'm trying to get the "stutter effect" on some of my sounds. If you can help me with this it would be cool. I'm using Sonar 7 Producer Edition.

  • Hi

You can slice your audio using the S key. Place your timeline where you want it to slice. Turn off "Snap to Grid" and zoom in for fine slices.

    good luck

  • Hi, dustypuppy. Thanks for such a very clear and informative video. Keep up the excellent work.

  • Hi Dwight and thanks again. Do you think that VC 64 is enough to mixing vocals ? And do you create a reverb's buss for your vocals ?

  • I believe VC64 does a great job on vocals. Try the pre-sets and don't be afraid to turn some knobs too :)

For reverb, I place the Lexicon in the "FX Send" bus which is already there. If its not there, you can add a stereo bus for this purpose.

  • Thanks again, very clear !

  • Another great, easy to understand and effective tutorial .Why doesn't Cakewalk give you a part time ,on line, job explaining their complicated miracles .Are you listening Cakewalk ? Everybody loves Dustypuppy;s tutorials !

  • perfect!

  • Hi Dwight:

Couldn't agree more with KeithCold1 ... I, too, always look forward to any and all of your postings ... you have such a good command of the basics, and your ability to share them help us all ... I hope all is well you way ... thank you very much for the post ... take care ...

    Don ...

  • Thanks so much Don

  • I check your site often and have used every tutorial a number of times to learn more about Sonar. I can't thank you enough! Stay warm - an Alaskan admirer

  • thank you :)

  • wow that's fantastic...is that sonar 8?

  • Yes it is Sonar 8 Producer Edition

8.5 is out now :P I want it bad but not sure how much more my ol' computer can handle LOL

  • Cool
