6:38 to 6:50 is 6 similarly framed shot of Robin in row. That is NOT good editing. It's the most common problem throughout the clip, especially during The Frail (which is a hard song to edit). The cuts are just pointless. Why cut to a different angle and disorientate the viewer if the image they see if barely any different from the last?
Also, the camera from the high angle has some weird framerate issues going on that make it look insanely amateur.
@squall6789 It's a GUITAR solo. That merits several back to back cuts to the GUITARIST. Seems like you learned editing from a book called "How to create extremely boring, uninspiring edits."
@skbonit It's not the fact that its 6 shots of robin, it's that its 6 extremely similar shots of robin (there is the one shot thats a little different though, still not enough). In a pro DVD they'd cut back to a wide or go in for a close up on the guitar or something. I know in this situation where your source material is shakey fan filmed footage it's almost impossible to cut it how you'd like, but it'd still be nice to see some of the "same shot" cuts to be worked around with something else.
@squall6789 that's probably because that's all the source material allowed for. Speaking from a schmuck-with-a-camera's perspective, I found myself following the action... and during this particular timeframe, I'm sure I wasn't alone in putting the focus on the guy doing the interesting stuff, and I was left of center stage! I think these folks did a great job with this edit, and if they could have made it any more dynamic, they would have.
@gregthepilot Yeah, when the source material doesn't allow for much else you need to get creative though. Meticulously look through all the available footage for something else to jam in there, even for just a second to split up the monotony of 6 shots in a row of the same thing OR just cut to a wide for a second and a half. Something to keep it a little more dynamic.
I'm just saying for constrictive criticism. If I really hated the project I'd just be on hear saying it's shit and nothing else.
@squall6789 Yeah, that's called a strobe light. Definitely not frame-rate issues. It's light banding on the image sensor of the camera. Only it's horizontal matching the strobe's movement, if you look at the closer cameras in the pit you'll notice purple and green vertical bands from the lighting as well (And you can tell who owns Canon cameras). And it does look amateur, because it's all from amateur cameras :)
@rlemv8 Nah, not the strobe bit. The whole image looks weird. There's some kinda weird frame blending or something going on. It looks like the video has been slowed down even though it hasn't.
@rlemv8 Actually if that higher angle was shot on a dslr it's possible that the camera person bumped the shutter speed down during the low light part in The Frail, giving it that weird effect. Later on when there's crazy lighting going on the problem seems to have gone away.
@squall6789 Oh, you were talking about the Frail, I thought you were talking about 6:00 - 7:00. The Frail stuff is definitely lighting related. Also, considering the camera conversions needed, pixel motion estimation would have to be used to avoid 4th Frame repeats, and create actual "progressive" frames that technically aren't there. Definitely agree on the DSLR part though, it's really apparent in the zoom. But I guess that's just the nature of the beast in a project like this
really looking forward to this release. I saw the band live on this tour and I really liked the stripped down line up. they kicked asses big time! and now thanks to you guys we can re-live the experience. keep up the good work - it's much appreciated!
The quality of your guys' edits are mind-numbing. 1000x times better than TOUIOU. I can see now why it's taken you guys this long. You can tell every single cut, every single shot was meticulously chosen. The wait is WELL WORTH IT.
@ninpatrol1 for the record we agree, TOIOU did a great job with their project. and we intend to do the same. this isn't a competition - at the end of the day we're both working towards giving the fan community something that's missing.... and something they can relive over and over again. we give respect to any group that takes on something like that. its not an easy undertaking.
Magnificent, synthethikz! Kudos to you and the rest of the crew for a job well done. I'm so happy to see the project moving along and will wait patiently - like a good NINnie - for the finished product.
Oh, and I so want the kalimba he plays at the end!
I'm convinced this isn't coming out.

TOUIOU did an excellent job.
To draw comparsions between atld & TOIOU... I think there's no need for it.
