My dad surprised us one time and brought home a new 1979 Red Plymouth Volare with red interior and mag wheels. It was a gorgeous car and we never had any problem with it until my older brother totalled it in 1985. Boy, was my dad pissed. LOL!!
The 1976 and half of the 77s were crap, they were built just as well as any car from ford or gm from 78-80. I've now owned 3 and I'm 24, no major issues.
that guy in that commercial gave up dependability those and the aspen were junk even though they had bulletproof 318 in them the bodies fall apart only after 6 months to a year after being sold these were the cars that almost put chrysler to the grave.Read lee Iacocca biography from 1984 it tells all about the follies of these cars
@1978mtb You're not kidding you gave up reliability with those things. A friend of ours bought one of the pieces of crap, and it had exactly 25 miles on it at it's first breakdown. He backed out of the driveway, started down the road, and it just died. They did have a really good starter motor and battery in them. Those were two things that had to be well engineered if you were going to own one of these. They got a workout.
@bigman55434 Dont forget the SuperPower Steering..you could drive those things offroad with one pinky...almost too much power assist in those days on Volare
@StoneCold75 hahha i had an 81 lebaron sedan with a 318 aka 5.2 ltr v8 with power steering could steer it with 1 finger with no problems and thats either sitting still or driving down the road
@bigman55434 back in the day u had to have a backup balast resistor in the glove box as the old chrystlers where know for those resistors going bad causeing a loss in spark
cuz i already have a real strong 460 in an f150 that i got for free.paid 150 bucks for my volare and im thinkin cheap fast hot rod.did you ever read about the cheap thrills dart that hotrod mag built years ago?
@grasscat1977 yeh put a 440 chrstler v8 in it heck my uncle had a 70 dart with a 440 in it the dart originaly came stock with the 225 slant 6 then later on they came either with a 318 or 440 in the from the factory stock
The 75-79 Chevy Novas were even a much better, reliable, dependable , durable and has an even longer longevity than the 75-80 Ford Granada, AMC Hornet/Concord & even much superior than the 76-80 Plymouth Volare'. The only mistakes GM made with the 75-79 Chevy Nova was there were no Station Wagon version for a car of this midsize category and instead settled for a hatchback option which is more synonymous with subcompacts. The Novas were also discontinued to soon & Citation was an embarrassment
I agree. You see far more American cars that are over 10 than Japanese. Why is that? Because the AMerican cars last longer. I have a 1968 Chevy Biscayne with a 6 that is still going strong.
A friend of mine has a 79 Volare sedan (which is known as the ASS-Pain) which was a Canadian car; he has a 76 Volare wagon which has been in storage...
For some strange reason, I used to like the Volare as a kid and wanted my parents to buy one....
It was probably a good idea that they didn't.

Say what you want, but my '78 is still on the road. After 31 years, it has never once failed to start. The 225 slant six is an unstoppable motor!

@hugeshows agrees the slant / super six are damned good engines along side theer big bro the 318

Volare unreliable? I still drive one to work EVERY day. Can't kill the thing if I tried. Slant six is bullet proof.
jrcstudios 3 years ago
You can ram it on a tree if you want to kill it. That's a guaranteed way to kill a car.

or just wait for the rust to finish off the car!
