  • why do some people hold the bow like that and some people hold it like on a cello? Is there an advantage to one way or the other?

  • bravo!

  • cool german bow!

  • Just started playing my bass and I'm trying to find something I can do for solo or ensemble thats classical and kind of challenging this looks like a good peice to do it sounds so great

  • Makes me want to start playing again. I miss it so much.

  • I just love double basses. I have been playing one for a year now. You're definitely one of my idols. You play so well :)

  • Such a wondrous and magestic sound! I wish I one... I only play electirc bass guitar:\

  • @UnnecessarySarcasm I have a bass guitar and a keyboard. I could make an orchestra on the keys, but if I ONLY HAD a Double-Bass or Cello. The I could be legit.

  • what if the guy is really tiny and he is really playing the cello

  • @dravey2631 than the piano must be tiny too

  • can anyone recommend an easy/intermediate but good classical tune i can learn on my bass, i bought my bass with rock and roll in mind but would like to try using the bow??

  • @KRSpodcast Try the Bouree 1 and 2 from the Bach Cello Suite no. 3 arranged for double bass in G major. Ask your local music store if they have something like that. For a reference, watch on YouTube /watch?v=0VDmvuyKOyU Hope it helps!

  • @jcobalis Thanks man, appreciated, just watched it, i reckon i could just about manage that one, i like this video too but looks pretty hard, im still not familiar with all the frets yet.... thanks again. :)

  • @KRSpodcast The 3 duets from J.S. Bach's English Suits is intermediate/hard but It's good for practice with a bow...and Minuet by Bach is an easier piece for bowing you can find both online for free as well I hope it helps :)

  • who is the composer?

  • @KISIMOV Miloslav Gajdos, its in the description ha

  • wow! that was great! i love the bass.

  • ouch but still relly good

  • very very very beautyfull

  • Amazing piece and amazing playing! Congratulations!

  • Very derivative.

  • How expensive are these things? I am going to get a Bass Trombone but it cost around $3,000.000 so I can't get one till the end of summer.

  • you can buy one here from online Guitar (sellers Name) om eBay

  • ebay has them for sale for around 500$ to $2000+

  • @decaff123 i dont know if ebay is a safe place to get instruments. music stores are always the best place

  • Brilliant. Truthfully, I was like, spacing out, spelled by this guy. Anyone know where I can get a double bass?

  • Brilliant!!!

  • really soothing

  • i play this same instrument at my school and I'm better then all the other graders

  • Im wondering why I play the violin??, the doble bass is million times better.. is powerful

  • @krasnojcripke1989 i used to play violin, but I'm glad I switched to bass;) not many girls play double bass:D

  • @eunicorn1 yes it is a fact!! I going to return to the orchestra to play the doble bass :B

  • @krasnojcripke1989 woo whoo!:D

  • @eunicorn1 sorry is double bass "doble" is in spanish or "el contrabajo de la sección de cuerdas frotadas" :D

  • @eunicorn

omg your just like me yeah i know i love the ways it sounds and it is pretty easy to play and i am like the only girl in the school who plays it well actually a few people in the grade above me play! :)

  • @SwimmyTurtle you rock!:D

  • @eunicorn1

PSHHHH you dont gotta tell me

  • Where do i get the sheet music for this ??

  • What's the size of the world's largest double bass? We could use more giant double basses in symphony and philharmonic orchestras since they, along with giant tubas and subcontrabassoons, give those orchestras more much-needed 'low end'. By the way, excellent performance by a well-trained double-bassist.

  • @grickard319582010 : There's a thing called "Octobass" but it sounds terrible. I's about 8 foot tall, but it's pretty much worthless, since all you can get from it is long, sustained notes, and it's too hard control or to produce any sound (among other things). A full size double bass is about 6 feet, and it's as good as it gets for orchestra playing. Remember: "Size doesn't matter..." I'm serious! It's the quality what makes the difference.

  • The effort that went into learning this must have been great, but there were so many out of tune notes that hurt my ears. >.<

  • incredible...

and i saw the same in Spain...

this guy is a real killer!

    Congrats

  • Can I ask what song is it? is it Buch's fugue?it's important to me,please tell me if you know it! thanks a lot!

  • @TheNanstube It says it right there: Prelude and Fuge by Miloslav Gajdos.

  • Can I ask what song is it? is it Buch's fugue?it's importent to me,please tell me if you know it! thanks a lot!

  • What a great piece! This should be played more often!

  • I play upright bass as well, and my my, this is simply beautiful!

  • ***adds this video to Favorites***

AWESOME job man, keep it up :thumbs up:

  • Great playing. What' s your string height for arco playing?

  • uhm have you ever played with a german bow? the level of control it takes is insane.. i play french and had to switch to german and i was like wtf.

  • german bow=lazy XD

  • check out that vibration on the low E at 2:01 !

    Thats immense

  • Diggin' the german bow.

  • beautiful.

  • this is incredible

  • to the guy who said that a 15 year old boy can barely use one of these things im twelve and have to us a triplet because i cant play a double

  • Thumbs up if you're a German too!

    We're a dying breed!

  • @ThePsychoMike im 15 and i've been playing for around 4 years lol. My conductor in high school got me to try a german bow as opposed to a french bow and I actually prefer the german over it.

  • @To0kYourHp Happened a similar way for me as well.

I couldn't get the smooth sound the other basses could with the french bow, so we were just joking around when she said "Maybe you should try a German bow,".

    I took it seriously, ha.

  • whos' the compositor of this sick piece? is it bach's?

  • beautiful! this are the things that make life worth living

  • didn't realize how amazing double bass sounded when played correctly (with a bow).

  • @metalheadneji That's true, but consider some of the great bassist like Ron Carter, John Patitucci, and Charlie Haden can make the bass sing in pizzicato as well.

  • whats the name of the first peice?

  • what's the actual name of this piece? i'm looking for the sheet music.

  • @teamjoe3

Prelude and Fugue by Miloslav Gajdos no Bach here

  • your comment is a big eyesore on this video

  • Does anyone know where I could get the music to this? I'd love to give this a shot.

  • I want one! But they are so expensive! A 15 year old boy has a hard time getting one of these! XD

  • @Hiarch123 RENT TO OWN!

I got my cello at fourteen, am sixteen now, and it was the best thing that's ever happened to me!

I'm looking to give bass a try. It's never too late, and it's worth the money!

  • How much would it be a month? I don't have a job....

  • I feel ya! I'm in the exact same situation as it sounds :P

  • @Hiarch123 That's why they invented bass guitars ;) ...unless you want it for the bowing technique, then you're kinda f**ked, they are very expensive if you can't settle for a budget one, which I think run for around 500 or 600$. Try electric upright, they're a bit more affordable for the sound, you'll probably get a nicer sound out of a 600$ electric upright than a 600$ accoustic.

  • They were really expensive but now I have heard you can buy ones for as cheap as 300 euro!

  • @Hiarch123 first I would rent a bass to see if you want it but it is so much fun to play for me

  • @Hiarch123 I saved up from when I was 15 years old, Was able to buy one at 17 years of age. Best purchase ever.

  • @Hiarch123 try a silent bass, NS design makes some good ones, especially the WAV which has settings for optimal pizzicato and arco, its about a grand

  • @Hiarch123 ikr im 14 and im getting one next month. my teacher charges 75 dollars a lesson! but i guess that just because hes a professional. he plays in the national symphony orchestra.

  • @Hiarch123 get your school too get one. Thtas what i did for mine.

  • @Hiarch123 When I was 15 Rented one... it only cost about 10 dollars a month.

  • @Hiarch123 i am in the exact same boat

  • @Hiarch123 I know exactly what you mean. I'm having the same delima.

  • @Hiarch123 A 18 year old as well ^^. But just never give up. I just love the sound of double basses, the possibilities and everything. But I hate it when I search for double bass on youtube but all I see is two bass drums :D. Why can't the contrabasses be shown first. :D

Good for me was that I had the chance to fool around a bit on a double bass :D last week. It was pretty cool even if it must have sound horrible :D. Holding it in your hands gives you power already and playing it even more.

  • @Hiarch123 I know you posted this around a year ago but you can still rent the instrument... that's what I'm doing with a cello at the moment... :)

  • @Hiarch123. they are expensive buddy but they are worth every penny, i have a low to mid range double bass but it was still expensive, not compared to an upper end one tho, yeesh! your talkin a couple grand for a top notch one, best thing i ever bought tho,,, i got an Archer 3/4 double bass and was a bit worried about spending my money on coz i dont know who makes good ones/bad ones,i was well happy and would highly recommend archer for beginners or maybe even intermediate players.

  • im first chair bass at my school and we go on tour to all of the elementary schools and im in charge of doing a solo and i dont know what to play! im in 8th grade. i know all steps and notes... just reply with something good! please!

  • do the capuzzi bass concerto. if you can handle it. I really have no way of knowing but I dont recall it being too hard

  • @hellyeah0136 Um, jazz improv?

Create your own chord progression while

    simultaneously playing leads notes?

Perhaps play in the the key of D or A and

play all up on the scale of your choice while

keep the rhythm with open strings..

  • Woohoo so good you are

  • Who wrote this piece?

  • Great!

  • i play a 4/4 sized based in the school band... its taller than me. :(

  • lols my bass is too try being 4 11 and playing one my band teacher actually called me the short one =(

  • win!

  • @MusicLuv33r That's a good thing, haha. Makes reaching higher notes easier. I always have my head at the bottom of my Bass's pegbox.

  • Slightly out of tune now and then, but very very musical!

Much more musical than a lot of the solos you can hear in youtube. Congratulations!

  • Crazy doubles stop work on both movements!! 5 stars!!!!!!!1

  • Where can i buy the notes of this piece. I cannot find it anywhere.

  • try to contact directly Gajdos. he is cool guy

  • just wow. thank you for posting this. it's absolutely beautiful.... thank you..

  • What size bass is this? (:

  • It's probably a 3/4 sized bass. That's what most people are able to play. Full sized basses are barly ever used becaue they are so huge.

  • It's actually a 7/8 size

  • @jcobalis I think the only go out of 4 such and 3/4 or 4/4

  • @jcobalis how tall are you?

  • @jcobalis Is 7/8 larger than 3/4? If you see it from the eyes of a scientist or mathematician 7/8 would be bigger than 3/4. But does this work with the size of a double bass as well?

  • @FilmComposeRaHoppe A 7/8 is the size between a 3/4 and a full size.

  • @drgabrielsoileau youre wrong. 4/4 and 7/ are used alot in professional orchestras cause theyre louder. ppl are sometimes forced into using one.

  • @drgabrielsoileau I play a full size bass and I'm only 14 years old:D

and I'm only 6'0", but both the 3/4 and 7/8 basses felt too small

  • They really aren't that big, I use a full size bass.

  • amazing :)

  • again simply awesome that's insane I wish I could play like you someday

  • a fugue on the bass. that's pretty impressive...

  • I simply wanted to hear an up right bass solo with the use of the bow. I found it hear (although there are other videos by other people). Yours is the first i came up on in looking to hear one. thank you.

  • purely awesome is there any difference in the sound when you use a german bow or a french bow?

I think you're using the greman bow if you can explain me the difference it would be cool but anyway you've done a perfect job congratulations

  • absolutely gorgeous

  • Muy bien exelente trabajo

    Bravo

    Mauricio ROMERO

  • Very nice!

  • very very nice!!! bravo!!

  • is a double bass an upright bass or is there a difference

  • upright bass, contra bass, and double bass are all appropriate names

  • Don't forget Bull Fiddle.

  • lol, didn't know that one thanks xP

  • Same thing.

  • It's the same thing, just a matter of what genre and context you're playing in.

  • That fugue utterly blew me away. No idea that was possible on the bass.

  • everthig is possible on the bass u can play all violin and chello solos :)

  • not all lol some are just impossible.

  • ehh my mistake i probably forgot 'allmost' in this sentence :P u couldtheoreticly play all of them but in practice u would need a third hand ;-)

    p.s. Gr8 performance in ur vids ^_^

  • Are you in drop d tuning?

  • Very nice dear friend ! this piece is beautiful, so, I was looking for the music sheet and I can't found at all, please let me know where can I get a copy of this music. Congratulations again !!! keep on the road !!!!

  • Your use of "found" just reminded me of Francois Rabbath.

  • haha, is true! Im so sorry about that, Im learning english, Im a mexican bassist, where do you play?

  • simplemente fabuoso

  • Sweet! Props to you for playing Gajdos. He's a great player and composer. He's also a great human. Checkout my channel, an entire recital by him I just uploaded. Gret job!

  • Awsome!

  • nice! I'm currently learning to play the upright myself after been playing on the bass guitar for a while.

  • Welcome to the darkside! Bwahahaha.
