i something called a shuttlecock engine. in an old encyclopeadia. It was two heads with one cylinder bore and a free floating double haeded piston that jsut went back and forth . It had no crank the idea was to hook up a crank to an exahust tutbo and run it of the back pressure from the piston. i think they used it in briton on buses and wierd stuff like generators and bots cant find it on line. mabey its called something else on line think it was the 1978 britanica,
well im high risght now but i usually understand things better when i am, here is how i see it, if each piston can be fired on both the top and bottom of the piston all in one sleive, and alternate eachother every other stroke, makeing a 3 stroke....its a good idea because an engine the size of a typical inline four now has the displacement of a 8 cylinder motor but still at a four cylinder size!
To TRUELY have an odd numbered cycle engine there would have to be a spark plug and intake at the top and bottom of the cylinder. OR two pistons on opposing ends of a connecting rod with separate carbeuration/intake/ignition. . . and anyways it would make no sense. Just because something CAN be done does not mean it should. And @GGGG761 , a 1 stroke is not even possible. . . well. . . it is, but it sure wouldn't haul ass. . . it would send the piston down. . . and there it would sit.
Why?

-Strokes are the movements of the piston.
-Cycles are the "functions" of an engine (intake,compression,combustion,exhaust).
-So I think it`s more like 3-cycle, much like the "Lenoir cycle"-engine is, if you know what I mean.

@furmaster212 because it utalizes the empty space left underneath each piston that a four stroke does not, by fireing each side of the cylinder! :)

why build a 3 stroke its just stupid, what a waste of time old fart

build a 1 stroke engine that thing will hall ass

How about an explanation of how it works w/three strokes? Interesting concept....
Snoep76239 3 months ago
How do you achieve 3 strokes ? shouldnt it be an even number, because for every downstroke there should be an upstroke ?
RenzeZielman 3 months ago 10
@CoffeeJunkie2011 3 stroke would mean every 3 stroked of the piston you have ignition. Very silly. 6 stroke would make sence.

@MrReRacer Was just being foolish, lol, no offense meant!!!! Forward thinking is a thumbs up in my book!!!!

The Kawasaki Triples that were manufactured in the 60s and 70s were 3 cylinder 2 stroke engines.
mikehradel 6 months ago
@mikehradel but he's talking about a 3 stroke, not a 3 cylinder

Worlds first? Didn't Kawasaki, among dozens of other motorcycle manufacturers make 3 stroke engines during the 60's and 70's? Some still do?

@TheElTrollo
Those were 2 stroke, dipshit.

this should be more developed!
what the fuel usage and performance?
is it better than 2 stroke injection?
