Great stuff.........kind of inspired at the beginning by Guillou's "Icarus." I once heard Guillou himself improvise on the theme to the TV show "Dallas."
yuck. this is just smoke and mirrors. this is not real improvisation as done by the masters. what master would ever start a piece in that fashion and then go into that soft uninspired nothing section? and there is zero resemblance to that theme once he proceeds. and dont tell me i don't know what i'm talking about because I have seen latry and others do this for years. It's always the same crap done with different tunes.
But the theme is actually present throughout the whole entire improvisation.. he uses lots of rhythmic motives that suggest the rhythm of the theme.. the theme is inverted a few times I even think. This is a killer improvisation. French improv like this isn't supposed to be all clean and pretty and church-like. Smoke and mirrors is a term I hate because improvisation, like I said, isn't supposed to sound prim and proper all the time; Latry happens to have tons of spark.
@goodguysdoll I think it takes a special person to appreciate this type of improv. I hear the tune throughout this pretty intense improvisation. He gives us the theme then takes chunks of it and plays around them. Its just his style. You don't have to like his style. However, just because you do not like it does not make Mr. Latry any less of a very gifted and talented master musician. We all have different styles. One style is not right or wrong over another.
It's in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It houses the only dual console, dual action organ that I know of that Gabriel Kney has built. It is a mechanical key action and stop action instrument, but it has a computerized, movable console which uses electric key action and stop action.
This improvisation gives me the odd urge to suddenly covert to Catholicism for some reason.

Sounds kinda like the "Icarus" of Guillou.

A great organist and improvisor taking on a classic and, importantly, well-known tune. What a way to connect with and surprise an audience!
Fantastic!
