The funny thing is, Volkswagen actually lost millions building the world's most popular car at the Clayton factory in Australia, and the closer they got to 100 percent local content, the more money they lost.
@gagislobista - Planned obsolescence is a crock. Things wear out, and the longer you hold onto it, the more wears out and goes wrong. Besides, I bet your daily drive is a bit newer than a 60s VW.
We have a classic VW beetle 1500cc while our neighbor had a muscle car. We compare it who's engine has the best quality that will last longer. After 36 years our beetle stiil runs smoothly without giving us a headache. My neighbors muscle car, it's engine in bad condition. The odometer of our beetle reads 550,000 miles . Our neighbors muscle car reads 438,000 miles. My point of view. The over all designed and quality of Classic VW was made perfect.
i just bought a 1961 beetle to restore back to original condition (love it so much) and while watching that video...i think for a moment and say to my self...."my car was there a one stage...it was made there" :) amazing how these cars last so long.
I love my 72 bug. it was my first car. I still have it I drove it home Jul 1977 and did not know how to drive a stick . I learned real quick . fear is good motivator. this is a great video. (O O)
Had a `73 then a `67 ! Totally broke my heart when I had to sell the `67 as it was beautifull in Cream White but unfortunately it was terminal with rust ! : ( ! Gonna get another pre `68 model but this time make sure that rust hasn`t taken hold ! Peace Ye`all !!
i'm still driving my 1960 Vw Beetle everyday ...just recently sent it to be coated with new paint...mine uses a stand to hold up the front boot(not springs)...a RHD...with a carrier since 1964...same engine, gear knob worn out, seats re-upholstry, with dark glasses for rear view mirror, broken horn ring, the rest still working...with its original keys and floor boards....original metal press registeration number plates...I love the car more each day since it's first day with me..it keeps me going
Id would really love to buy one of these, i just love everything about the car, the simplicity of it and how easy it is to maintain, they just dont make cars like they used to.
I like this video.Ihave a 74 VW Bug of my own.Its rugged, reliable, easy to fix and cheapto fix.Oh and definitely fun to drive.I love it.Ill never get rid of it.Long Live the Beetle.
I envy all those guys who built them cars, I live in Mexico and they stopped the production 'til 2003, I fortunately just bought one about a month ago, it's a '92 and it's on good conditions, I'm going to make some good customization to make it look good, not punked out.
Simply, thank-you. I wish we could revert to production of this series of vehicles. Not to be Communist, but i wish i lived in a country where this was still the national, you could only have a choice of model & colour..lol... These autos are cost effective, fuel efficient, and beautifully designed. My uncle gave me his own, and i love it!
P.S. I just noticed that it was directed by none other than Fred Schepisi, who went on to direct the big stuff in Hollywod e.g. Six Degrees of Seperation, Roaxanne and others. Better update IMDB!
This is an awesome video. My grandmother owned a beetle which looked EXACTLY like those, colour, shape trim. (it was a 1965) for 18 years, before I eventually got it and drove it for about 10 years. We finally sold it and it still gets around Leichardt (just). It rarely left me stranded, and travelled around NSW, Vic SA and Tassie. Only wish I could have taken back to this factory and have it restored to the condition you see here. THANKS!
I'm not surprised the VW's in the film would look exactly like the one you had. Changes were few over the lifetime of production of the car (around 60 years!). Eventually the headlights changed, as well as the tail lights, and some other details, but otherwise it was the same car that was designed in the 30s.
That's right, but there are several subtle telltale differences. For example, the licence plate light is broad, rather than pointed (pre '64 I think). The headlights went vertical in '67. There is also a fuel gauge in there, which came in in about 61. Also that is a 1200 engine with miserale 6V electrics, so I can pretty well narrow it down to about64-65. Even the colour (bahama blue) and the trim (brown and white) were absolutely identical to the one we had. It was the nicest beetle shape
Awesome video!!! They don't hand build them anymore. Porsche and Ferrari does. Most of the car production lines use those creepy robots. Although robot is very precise, will NEVER compare to being handbuilt.
Back during the Gemini and Apollo era, I had a real bonafide German rocket scientist who lived across the street from me. Even though he was pulling down some big bucks working with Wernher von Braun's team, he always drove VW Type 3 squarebacks and later, drove Type 2 VW buses until he passed away. Even though he could afford pricier cars, he believed in air-cooled VW's and he never had any problems with any of them.
a great simple car to own back then, and even now its still a pleasure to drive.owner of a 67 conv. ghia

Apparently, to paraphrase Henry Ford, you could buy Volkswagens in Australia in any color you liked, as long as they were powder blue.

I believe its a 1964 model deluxe beetle.
they were virtually hand made..
imagine hand rubbing VWs every day..
it makes things look too easy..
they were hitting the windows in with a mallet pretty hard.. lol..
good paint jobs..
I love driving My 1968 German made beetle..
