I don't think apple realizes how the corporate it world works servers have to be cheep & compatible in average a sever gets changed every 6 months no one cares about the looks of the server
@WatchmenDrManhattan What enterprise company switches their servers every 6 months? The fastest I've ever seen a company replace a server is about 3-4 years, and they usually only migrate the mission critical stuff to a new server keeping the old server for another couple of years. Ideally the life of a server should be "forever". but unfortunately no one offers a "forever service contract" so the servers usually stay primary until that expires. maybe you ment 6 years? that sounds more realistic
@tman152 I think you are referring to storage servers & web servers belonging to small company's but large corporations, government's, science institutions, Google constantly change there servers. Some computer manufacturer's even offer to upgrade your server after a few months.Apple has & knows a single market the apple fan boy or girl yes there products look cool but there yesterday technology at tomorrow's prices.
Same problem as always an entry server should cost 1000 quid - but the same spec cost 2500 quid - Yes they sell the Mac server software 500 quid - people can't run Mac os unless they Mac servers - Any basic intel server would have done the job - Yes getting the OS stable is already important - But apple don't listen mini mac as their entry desktop. It;s better to have entry servers and replace them every 2 years then overpriced one twice the price.
So much for earning credibility with business. Whatever was earned he just wiped out in one swoop with the killing of the Xserve he was promoting here. Apple just leaped forward in completely removing itself from the business and professional world. There is no credibility left.
Xseve, XRAIDS are wonderful servers, no doubt. One rack can run a possible 7 Terabits or higher. I love to watch Steve Job's Keynotes. Thank you for posting.
It is server class hardware in a 1U case. Xserve is the name of the computer. XSAN however, is software that manages large arrays of multiple hard disks. XSAN (X to represent OS X) and SAN (Storage Area Network). Wikipedia or just post back for more info ;)
I don't know much about servers, I'm pretty sure they're just computers that are extremely optimized for the things servers like to do, like process data, and be able to send it to a whole bunch of people. A lot of it is handled with software though, like Mac OS X Server. They make Windows and Linux server editions too.
he did give a reply, the server the guy was on about was made when steve wasn't involved in apple witch he admitted to be a bad product in terms on failing
Wow... But even then he never really answered the question I mean look, they dropped the Xserve Raid which was holding the lowest cost per gb before it was somthin like $3.14. But they can it. Thats the reason why so many companies don't use Apple Server equipment. Even though OS X Server (any version) has kicked so much butt, but they just drop the hardware ends without any input from clients...
The XServe RAID was a great deal when it came out, and maintained a good price per GB over time. Problem is, it used plain Ultra-ATA 100 Drives, which has poor performance compared to SAS or SATA, which is why they dropped it, and sold another vendor's more modern solution.
What the fuck did that guy ask?
