I honestly can't remember anyone ever being sued over a racial slur said during a roast. Criticized, yes, such as Ted Danson at the Whoopi Goldberg roast. A lawsuit over something like that wouldn't get far anyway. You can't just be offended, you'd have to prove damages. At a roast, insults and slurs are the norm- that's the point of it, for God's sake. Not only the word "spade" but just about everything else Rickles said would be inappropriate anywhere else BUT at a roast.

But I get really annoyed when I see all these comments calling comedy today "crap" and "crude" -- there was comedy back then that were those things too! And there is comedy today that are those things. But there is ALSO comedy today that is smart, funny, and great. I really can't stand it when people make blanket statements.
