Well well. Had Wham! never existed, I'd go saying this is one of the best songs ever written. But as Wham! DID exist, I must say all the backing sound is a naughty rip-off of "Everything She Wants" just with a different melody put underneath. And if that was not enough, the VERY same sound and chord pattern was reused in 1987 by Robbie Nevil ("C'est La Vie")
I love this tune and 80's videos. These ladies just look like they are having so much fun who cares about choreography. Wicked upload. Video is a bonus...
I heard it on the radio a while ago and I love how the radio host said that he, liturally, danced the soles of at least one pair of Ecco Free shoes and a pair of cycling shoes too this song.
thank u jasonfist been looking for this tune. This is why I love the web, u can find things your looking for with limited info, just type in what u have & eventually you will find it. This song had limited play on our local radio wtlc 105 back in the day. Guess it wasn't a mega hit but i loved it.
I love 80s videos. They always seem like they're having a laugh no matter what band it is. I love the computer graphics behind them when they're dancing that look like flames. Its just so fanstastically 80s. It reminds me of early Kate Bush and the Jacksons. Go 80s.
@hoss13um I can understand why you must get sick of seeing GTA comments, but you've got to understand Rockstar has given our generation a showcase of amazing tunes from the decades before we were born which we've now come to love. You can't dismiss such a great achievement that easily even if it is a geeky way of hearing these tunes.
yep no precision choreography back then ..if they didnt have the moves then no video but these girls from Guyana had what it took & still they move so beautifully just natural unlike these days
I love these simple eighties' videos as they concentrated on the talent of the singer(s) more than the glitz and glamor of the visuals. That is the problems with the modern videos of today. Heard this song for the first time on The Ballad of Gay Tony and completely fell in love with it ever since.
I remember dancing to this song on our caravan holidays in the local disco - I was 14 years old and I thought I was sooo coool in my pastel coloured clothes.
You have to dance to this tune - CAN'T STOP DANCING NOW!!!! WOOOOOOHHHH
JA, Mai Tai....een formatie waar we echt trots op konden zijn. De 12 inch van dit nummer is ook te gek!! Dit is super!! Schiet lui als Gordon, Jantje Smit etc lekker richting de maan aub!!!
@diz1233 ...Then you must've downloaded Gay Tony--Vice City FM is only on the 'Episodes from Liberty City' Disc--It's one of three Bonus Radio Stations added as an incentive to buy the Disc (And as a replacement for all the Radio Stations from the original GTA IV that were taken out of the 'Episodes' Disc)...
@AdmiralBirdseye: They're from somewhere in Europe. I remember when this video came on New York Hot Tracks in 85 and the host said they were from Europe.
With songs like this, 'I Can't Wait,' 'Kayleigh,' 'Heart and Soul,' 'Find The Time' and others, Vice City FM may be the absolute BEST Radio Station in the series. It's definitely one of my favorites...
This great track never resolves to a I chord, and that's why it's so exciting, it never "lands" The chords go III, VI, II V, round and round, and the terrific vocal seems American, anything but Dutch. Nothing Eurotrash about it.
@Drblooter99 Eurotrash? All white Americans are descendants of the Europeans. Like Americans are better anyways... And us Dutch people usually don't have an accent.
I meant that the band does not sound like a European dance act. None of that Electro-beat and bad English. This is very polished soul-funk, and sounds as though it must come from USA. By the way I am Uk citizen not American.
The quality of this video is terrble te effects and the filming is not very high quality as the videos were know for that time in music. But this is an awesome radio song a song that you would turn up and get all excited when if came on the radio.
Quality track from 1985 what a year that was. I was in my late teans loving every minute with my tight permed hair with high lites and a Ford Capri. How can anyone say music like this was crap. This is feel good catchy happy music. Unlike the gangster rap with drugs swearing and racist attitude of today. Great video
Erm, there was the lengthy 18-month hiatus in 85/86 that led to a reduction in episodes that I was referring to, leading to an eventual demise in 1989.
Well If gangster rap is not racist how come you hear the word "Nigger" or "white bitch" in nearly every song let alone all the drugs and guns they promote in their raps. Gangster rap is violent and is causing kids to live a life of crime trying to be like the gangster rap they listen to. If a gangster rapper was told not to swear mention violence or use racist chants they would be out of work. If gangster rap is not racist according to you then i would hate to hear one that is...
...You don't hear 'White bitch' in nearly every song. Stop lying trying to make a point. I agree with what you said about kids emulating what they hear, but that's it. And quit with the 'Every rapper says Nigga' bullshit--There are so-called 'Gangster Rappers' who don't curse in songs. Just admit that: 1) You don't like Hip-Hop & Rap music as a genre, and 2) That you don't know what you're talking about.
And since you wanna talk about racist music, why didn't you mention Death Metal?

i was not arguing, i was just saying what other biographys of mai tai state where they are originally from. it would make sense if they was from surinam, but at the same time there is no reason why they could not have learnt dutch when leaving guyana for holland all those years ago..DOESNT MATTER anyway, they a class act and i seen there website yes its in dutch....my fave song is "what where when who" from the 1st album
ok even their personal website in their own words didnt convince you...so jonny, here goes, you're right,i was wrong and mai tai group is wrong too about their own biography that they wrote themselves, because according to you they learnt dutch and are born in guyana....yep,you're right, sorry about everything:) have a good one :)

completely disagree - the 80s was an excellent time to grow up in. Everything was fun! No 'depression' sufferers nor panic attack victims! Obesity was rare.
Fair point, I have fond memories of the 80's despite having to put up with racist abuse at school and in the streets. Football was in its prime (Pat Jennings = Legend), community ties were tighter, snow over XMAS.
I just think of it in terms of popular culture and remember New Romantics and other weird fashions, Stock Atkin and Waterman putting the final nail in the coffin of proper musicians, hence music like this were a saving grace. If that makes sense.
i grew up in the 80s and it was a terrific time!! to say `it was crap` makes me wonder if you already existed at that time or why you had such a bad time. generally considering music of an entire decade to be a good or bad one often is based on good or bad or no life experience at a specific time. and we had so much fun...so i still love the 80s!!
For Mai Tai completists out there (and I can't be the only one): this video version is a re-edit of the album and single versions. And it sounds slightly EQ'd, too.
Yet another classic 80's song thats blasting away out of my speakers. I only up graded to broadband so i could use you tube and re live my days of night clubbing in the 80's. The 80's rock and none of the modern yo gangster rap rip off rubbish comes close to this...
Great hey. These girls are gorgeous to me, not like all the crap on nowadays. Barbie doll size 10's all made up to the hilt. Remember those days when we sent letters to each other. Great track, great days, alive in our hearts.
great tune' i watched them yesterday on top of the pop's 2' interesting to note they were from guyana'as i thought they were 'yanks',you cant beat the eighties music'.
well jonny dunno where u read that and if u double checked it for errors before u came here to write it,but my mom knows the band personally and their descent is from suriname and also the islands of the dutch antilles, not guyana
well i checked some sites like allmusicguide and they say they are from guyana, u can look it up yourself, even watch the totp 2 video of history on here in youtube, says they are guyana's most successful group, so im sticking with that
hmmm just posted a reply, didnt see it pop up but heres mai tais personal official website..its in dutch because they speak dutch but "born in suriname" says it all.....ok,im done educating u becoz int he end it doesnt matter really, doesnt cost me anything if u choose to still refuse the singers own words where they are from,so be it......by the way my fav song is "am i losing you forever"....check it out,its awesome
Wow I've got this song on one of my C60s when I used to tape songs from the top 40 on a Sunday afternoon. My copy is full of interference including my Mum asking if I wanted a drink loudly from the bottom of the stairs!! Do you remember Rory Bremners take on 19 about cricket players? Jardine and bodyline. What memories. Thank you!
Well well. Had Wham! never existed, I'd go saying this is one of the best songs ever written. But as Wham!

Great track, great days, alive in our hearts.

croydel 3 years ago
ur facts are a bit off, croydel, they are specifically from suriname and from dutch antilles
twq1976 3 years ago
actually it was stated they were originally from Guyana not Surinam
jonblazeinc 3 years ago
well jonny dunno where u read that and if u double checked it for errors before u came here to write it,but my mom knows the band personally and their descent is from suriname and also the islands of the dutch antilles, not guyana
twq1976 3 years ago
well i checked some sites like allmusicguide and they say they are from guyana, u can look it up yourself, even watch the totp 2 video of history on here in youtube, says they are guyana's most successful group, so im sticking with that
jonblazeinc 3 years ago
hmmm just posted a reply, didnt see it pop up but heres mai tais personal official website..its in dutch because they speak dutch but "born in suriname" says it all.....ok,im done educating u becoz int he end it doesnt matter really, doesnt cost me anything if u choose to still refuse the singers own words where they are from,so be it......by the way my fav song is "am i losing you forever"....check it out,its awesome

It seems that good music nowadays is His-to-ry
Loved the 80s!

Shouldn't this have been a big hit in America?
86pimp3 3 years ago 2
@86pimp3 It was. "History" reached number 3 on Billboard's Dance/Club Play Chart and number 58 on the Hot 100 Chart in 1985.

Thank you!

ALLRIGHT...another forgotten gem...used to do the HIS-TO-RY bit on the dance floor at the local club !! (he says cringing)
