I've seen Alexi improvise in backstage and he's totally awesome. He was writing a song with Anssi Kippo of Astia Studio and they were doing it just out of boredom for waiting to get on stage. The song in question wasn't even metal, so he's musically talented in a true sense of the word.

Why are people saying that Alexi isn't an improviser. He is a great improviser as shown in his earlier work. With that said, he sounds only decent here and I don't know what has gotten into him over the last 6 years or so. The end was pretty good.

He plays very well, though his tone live is very flat and lifeless, and the music he writes is of a very high standard. I believe that to be a balanced, and fair, assessment of him. He is not a driven artiste like Vai et al, but he doesn't have to be. He is unique, thus offers something different.
