I teach this tune for the fiddle! You can view the lesson for free on my channel, or go check out my website. I post new lessons every week for fiddle, guitar, and mandolin.
This is such a great old-tune, and I love the clawhammer. All you need now is a fiddle playing along with you!
hey, i'm 63 and just retired. Got me a banjo couple months ago and you have, thus far, been an inspiration. Trying to get this flailing thing down but lack some banjo sense....try to follow but keep hearing this thumping sound of your hand hitting the head...is that your thumb or what?
@ubie47 Danged if I know. I don't try to do that, it just happens.. Don't worry about the thumpin' just keep playin'. It'll all work itself out after a while..
I have goten so tired of all this right and wrong way to play a tune. This captures the true spirit. If a song gets away from you you hang in there and go with it. Make it your own. Just play the darn thing. Love it.
I just got back from a folk festival, and this African guy was playing a 3 stringed instrument, and he was playing clawhammer. Imagine that. Yee Haw...
Not sure what it is but I always find your banjo playing to sound really unique (in a great way!) Your pieces always remind me why I love the sound of the banjo! What finger do you use to strike your melody note?
Index finger, back of the fingernail on the downward stroke, and thumb. That's it. My hands were shot years ago. I could never do Scruggs style. Tried for about 20 years, before an old banjo coot told me to throw my picks away and taught me how to play. Thanks for the compliment.
sir Iam from the mtns of Wv, and play the ol banjer stlye myself for 20 years. what do mean some day ull get it right. SOunds good. Just work on ur rythumb
Pure enjoyment...starts leading down a path and then takes off...reminds me of spring..flowers starting to bgloom and then POP a whole garden :) Thanks for the song.
Nice rhythm you got goin there. That is my kind of banjo strap...I found nylon tiedown straps at a dollar store that had enough heavy duty straps to make about 10 cradle type straps for banjos. That comes to a dime per banjo strap. That banjo sounds great.
It's an old Lyon & Healy Ladies banjo. I made a Stromberg style tone ring out of an old brass cymbal and some 9mm pistol shells. The Georgia Railroad video shows the inside and tone ring.. The strap is a rope. Works great and looked cool when I was in a jug band..
You gave me a great mental picture of you holding on to that song for dear life!! You did a fine job, so don't worry whether you play it like "everybody else." Peace to you.
Sounds pretty good to me Lil' Brother.....
Wanna' learn to play something when I retire
Hope I'll have the time to spend then

acefrehley813 1 year ago
@acefrehley813 Tie it into the pot bolts. Just below the neck on the neck side, and just above the tail piece on the bottom. No worries mate..

Yeah, Angeline, she's an ornery ole gal, but you've about got her tamed :)

GREAT SONG. You did a great job. A good song on the banjo is never played the same. You added your own feelin' into it, outcome?...GREAT JOB.
