You had to be there of course (40 odd years ago)... but listen to O'Sullivan this is a class field and Nijinsky makes it look easy.Possibly the best horse I've ever seen, unbeaten till the Arc where he must have been knackered! Never seemed to win flashy just very smooth.
nijinsky staying in training and meeting mill reef in the 71 king george what a race that would have been i wouldnt like to say the winner but lester would not have been able to take it this easy !!!
@bigttim1 I love Dancing Brave but Nijinsky would have had too much for him. DB took too long to get going. Both Nijinsky and Mill Reef were better. DB was a fabulous horse. i love him. However those two were absolute superstars with efforteless ability.
This was as easy a King George win you'll see. Had Nijinsky won the Arc, he would have then been retired with no defeats - and would have been hailed as horse of the century. As it happens, after his Arc defeat, Vincent O'Brien tried to redeem the great horse's reputation by winning the Champion Stakes at Newmarket a fortnight later. He lost. Such a shame, as he was a magnificent racehorse.
I am a huge Brigadier Gerard fan and consider him the greatest miler in history with no arguments even considered. However I do think Nijinsky was mishandled at the end of his 3 year old season. He should never have run the Champion Stakes and I would also have also kept him out of the Ledger. He would have surely gone on to win the Arc with that rest and I believe might have been considered the greatest thoroughbred ever.
I completely agree. He lost his Arc by running in the St Leger and apparently lost 31lbs after the race. He was over the top by Arc day, no doubt and by the Champion Stakes he was totally gone. And remember he had a dose of ringworm shortly before the Leger which put a stop to his training and must haven taken a great deal out of him.
As a fellow Brigadier fan, i must say that having met Joe Mercer recently who was good enough to sign all my set of BG's race cards, he also states that BG would have beaten any of these great horses at 10 furlongs, to my surprise he also told me that Bg was a sick horse at York, and furthrmore stable staff knew it! though they didn't realise just how bad he was until after the race. Regarding Nijinsky, surely connections should have chosen one option , Arc or St Leger ! not both!
In the last 40 years there's been some top races with brilliant horses- Shergar's Derby, El Gran Senor's Guineas, Dancing Brave's Arc and many others....but nothing comes close to this. This is Nijinsky showing why he is a legend.
As facile a victory as this was, even Lester Piggott will tell you that the easiest Group 1 win he had was aboard the filly Humble Duty in the 1970 1,000 Guineas - a race which is featured on YouTube.
This was Nijinsky's defining moment. A quite extraordinary display. He was the only three year old in the field against five older horses. Blakeney, the previous year's Derby winner, was made look like a selling plater. Few winners of this race could have lived with Nijinsky this day. He was at his majestic best.

@ASupremeOwl Good, yes but I don't think he would have lived with Dancing Braves devastating turn of foot.

your mare's grandad happens to be probably the most gifted racehorse that ever set foot on a race course.
