One more thing... I tried to lean to make the turns or when making the turns like Nuno, but my horse, every time would do a flying change! Then I was said and corrected when I stayed straight on top of the horse.... Was it that I was doing it wrong or that the horse was trained wrong?
Maria, This IS classical dressage and what, in my opinion, we should all strive for. The horse is relaxed and free to move and is holding itself in frame willing and happily because it is being asked to, not forced to. If you trainer does not know who Oliveria is, I fear you might be better served finding a different trainer.
I am a beginner but wish to ride like this!!!!! I showed it to my instructor that said it was terrible from the point of view of the horse, that the horse was too rigid, did not do the right and beautiful bending.... can somebody comment on this? I am wayyy to much of a beginner to be able to respond to this.... I know who Oliveira is, she doesn't and although she said that I really wish i could ride like him!
@mariafzankl, I dont think there's anything wrong with aspiring to this at all. The horse was working at all times in a balanced manner, attentive to his rider. The rider is in turn staying consistent, and look how quiet his cueing is- there's no big overcue to get a small change.. To me, this is far more pleasing than modern dressage which tends to be bridle bridle overbend leg leg leg yank kick spur. There are few dressage riders who ride even close to this quietly.
I am the stupid, pretentious trainer who repairs horses that have had one too many of these riders. The handler holds the horse's head, not just the stirrup. A whip is not unneccesary, just in this instance. If you are pushing horses past their comfort zone simply because they are able, you are pushing away their willingness to be ready, making riding for anyone who is not a master unpleasant. Our goal, as trainers, is to lift the horse's gift, without destroying their usefulness. Fly me to PG!
Who are you stupid pretencious rider... The man who helps The Master for mounting is there just to put weight on the right foot strap because this horse is very straight and saddle must turn. Whatever mister wipatzek I propose to your pretention a way to prove how YOUR way to whip without distraction. So teach to your horse all the figure of this lesson by The Master, I pay for you the travel to Malveira (Portugal) and you show me in this straight place the way you do. We are waitin
A wonderful glimpse into a master's training session! I love how he uses so many different collection techniques to activate the horse's hindquarters, which produced the beautiful, lively and animated piaffe at 7:50.
@wlplatzek ... above the earth (I don't know the correct English term, but you know what I mean). You need a little agitation for that! ). Oliveira mounted and immediately started the training. So the horse has definitely been worked before. The horse places the head naturally. At this stage of collection the head is very high. You can see the collection in the close up. In modern dressage you won't find horses collected at this level. So many people aren't used to the sight any more.
@wlplatzek What exactly is wrong with the whip? Do I miss something? For me it looks like he is just holding it. The wip is also used to teach the horse the spanish walk, to teach passage and piaffe. When I took lessons in Portugal with one of his students we carried a whip all the time but only used it to tap the horse in thase execises. So, when you horse doesn't stand still (by the way, the horse was pretty still. I asume it was only a little agitated as it was prepared for the training ...
Really? This horse is gifted, the rider straight & quiet, but the whip is distracting, the horse is collapsing on his shoulder & overbridled. I hate seeing a trainer glorified for a name. He is not listening to his charge. If a horse can't stand for mounting, he should not be shoved around under saddle. Disappointing. Head set is the least important part of self carriage, & comes naturally with proper devopment, at the horse's anatomical position. Horses are your best teachers, if you listen.
Here in France we call Nuno's whip a "badine". It is the traditional "formal dressage" whip, a compliment to the european spurs which are used to refine the use of the leg. Nuno's ability to work in such a limited space is amazing. I'm leaning to do basse école on a friend's pure bred polish arab mare, not the usual breed chosen to do dressage as they tend to refuse to place their head naturally. The night following my second ride I dreamt I was a bird flying over the riding ring!
I am in tears watching this!!! I was a working student for over two years with two of his students, and to see this... I have no words!!!!!! One has to study the ART of Equitation (or classical dressage how most call it) to really appreciate this... the dressage as we see today in the show ring has abslolutelly NOTHING to do with how horses should and want to be ridden!!!!!!! Most competitive dressage is all about the EGO, not the rider!!!! Thank you for posting this...
This may look rigid if one is used to watching modern dressage. This horse is in a much higher state of collection than we ever see now, even in the Olympics. Note that M. Oliveira rode this entire segment with the reins in one hand, and the horse always had the correct flexion of his neck with the poll being the highest point. Modern dressage horses almost always have their 2nd and 3rd vertebrae as the highest point, which will not produce true collection, but have the horse on the forehand.
I'd very much like to know more about this video - the date, location and horse. The arena is Avessada as I remember it and the time is much earlier than the late '80s obviously. He horse seems more "restive" and tense compared to the horses Nuno showed at a later date. Much more "into the hand" and stronger in the contact. Perhaps this was a horse that would go on and do parades and or bull-fighting, much more traditional. But still magnificent of course. :)
What every horseman should strive for. Can easily say that most horsemen in the US cannot even come close to riding like this, or training a horse to this level. In fact, many riders would have no clue what they are looking at when viewing this video....a true equestrain work of art. This lightness, agility and union of horse and rider are not seen in modern Dressage.
It may be offered free on youtube, but it was composed in the late 19th century by Russian classical composer Rimsky Korsakov for a ballet treatment of the story of Scheherazade.
This looks totaly rigid to me. The back dosen't move. So of course it's easier(much) to manuever in such a small space. As they need to in bullfighting. I would not confuse this with what we are trying to achieve in Dressage...........
Moments of breathtaking grace and power. Truly the epitome of dressage. The horse has been guided to allow him to be as beautiful under the burden of a rider as he can be at liberty.
What can I say about Nuno that hasn't already been said. His invisible brushstrokes paint a masterpiece.
