This area is the dirty armpit of Vancouver. I have been on the bus going along East Hastings a number of times and am always horrified what I see. It all happens in broad daylight. Shocking! Less than a dozen blocks west of this, you have a clean, pristine upscale business district. What a contrast.

Safe injection sites, affordable and supported housing for the homeless, detox and rehab programs, and a non-judging and caring public...that is what is needed! I think that all drugs should be legalized in large cities (it is easier to catch drug addicts in smaller towns usually there are less). The government should make facilities where the people go and buy the drugs from the government at a price discounted from the streets. Also, the drugs would be pure so higher quality etc. They cannot leave the facility with the drug but they can leave after taking it. Also, put in place social workers etc. Then this would solve an enourmous amount of problems.
I don't think there is a magic solution for the DTES drug plague. Those who work see their tax dollars used on 'Welfare Wednesday' by people like those in this film to purchase crack and other nasty stuff and then these same working folks find themselves accosted and robbed by those same crack users. If you live in Vancouver, you have probably been a victim of this subsidized cycle of violence. The way our taxes are used, it seems that we pay to be attacked and robbed.
I was raised in Manchester and lived in London for 4 years, before that I was working in Vancouver for two. Personally mate, I felt equally unsafe in both. Maybe a bit more unsafe in Vancouver, just because it seemed more foreign to me. Both cities can be quite unpleasant at times.
There trying to clean up downtown for when Olympics come theyll hopefully have somethging worked out. I use to drive down hastings everyday on my way to work and on the night shifts there would be a person on the ground covered in a white sheet that had overdosed atleast 2-3 days out of 5 ushually around or at pidgeon park.

I live in Toronto, It has bad areas, Just like any other City does. If you mind your own business and stay away from certain places at night.. then you are fine. TO has cleaned up a lot. The "bad areas" are more spread out now. You don't have so many criminals or gangsters all in one place. Jane/Finch has cleaned up a lot. More criminal activities such as shooting and stabbing have been happeninging more in Scarborugh and Blackcreek area -Dufferin/Lawerence.

This area is the dirty armpit of Vancouver. I have been on the bus going along East Hastings a number of times and am always horrified what I see. It all happens in broad daylight. Shocking! Less than a dozen blocks west of this, you have a clean, pristine upscale business district. What a contrast.

I think that all drugs should be legalized in large cities (it is easier to catch drug addicts in smaller towns usually there are less). The government should make facilities where the people go and buy the drugs from the government at a price discounted from the streets. Also, the drugs would be pure so higher quality etc. They cannot leave the facility with the drug but they can leave after taking it. Also, put in place social workers etc. Then this would solve an enourmous amount of problems.

I don't think there is a magic solution for the DTES drug plague. Those who work see their tax dollars used on 'Welfare Wednesday' by people like those in this film to purchase crack and other nasty stuff and then these same working folks find themselves accosted and robbed by those same crack users. If you live in Vancouver, you have probably been a victim of this subsidized cycle of violence. The way our taxes are used, it seems that we pay to be attacked and robbed.

I was raised in Manchester and lived in London for 4 years, before that I was working in Vancouver for two. Personally mate, I felt equally unsafe in both. Maybe a bit more unsafe in Vancouver, just because it seemed more foreign to me. Both cities can be quite unpleasant at times.

I use to drive down hastings everyday on my way to work and on the night shifts there would be a person on the ground covered in a white sheet that had overdosed atleast 2-3 days out of 5 ushually around or at pidgeon park.

I live in Toronto, It has bad areas, Just like any other City does. If you mind your own business and stay away from certain places at night.. then you are fine. TO has cleaned up a lot. The "bad areas" are more spread out now. You don't have so many criminals or gangsters all in one place. Jane/Finch has cleaned up a lot. More criminal activities such as shooting and stabbing have been happeninging more in Scarborugh and Blackcreek area -Dufferin/Lawerence.

you're right... this doesn't even scratch the surface, go for a stroll at night... then you will see the real dtes. my buddy was a cop for the dt district, he was so tired of having to deal with the same bs everyday he left and moved on to another force in the metro where he could actually make a difference. on the other hand, my other friend is a mental health worker that has made some great friends down there. remember, these are people, that truely need help...

ive never really felt terribly threatened being in the DTES. i have lived and worked down there.. i used to go to the carnegie to play cards and for cheap lunches, chinatown, the metropolitan or cambie to drink. had some terribly fun nights down there. the drug problem is bad, but if your not into that shit you tend not to have problems. i live back in toronto, and there is nothing that compares to it here.
