Ayn Rand was nothing more than a libertarian, idiotic polemicist. She wasn't an even economist! How she could talk about "which system is best" or "how best to run the econ." is LAUGHABLE. Did she even STUDY economics at all in college? How the hell would she know? Her book Atlas Shrugged is WORTHLESS.
I mean, exactly HOW "overregulated" could America have been in 1958?? It's the most presumptuous nonsense I've ever heard!
It is horrible. You have the Religious Right denying scientific darwinism on one hand, and then embracing of the worst excesses of social darwinism on the other hand BY THE SAME DAMN PEOPLE(!) Talk about being double-minded.
@TheAntiAusterity It is horrible. On one hand you have the Religious Luddite's denial of scientific darwinism on one hand, and the embracing of the worst excesses of social darwinism on the other hand BY THE SAME DAMN PEOPLE(!) Talk about being double-minded.
Just look at those eyes. Certainly those dark, ever darting eyes are not the eyes of a disturbed human being. Also... If you believe in free-markets the conservative right gives you a pass on believing in God or Christ. I mean, sure, you'll still be going to hell when you die, but at least you tried to point society in a moral direction while you were living.
I usually refrain from using language of this sort, but she really was a vile old cunt. Her beliefs were, at their very core, pure sociopathy and nothing more. It's not a political issue with shades of grey - it's an anti-humanist clusterfuck that is fundamentally wrong on every level.
Anyone espousing her bullshit should be regarded as HIGHLY suspect and I would recommend keeping such people as far away from you as possible.

If you would like to see what the world looks like with less regulation, less (established) social services, and less tax collection. Hence, more "capitalism", just look to Mexico.
If you would like to see what a world of more government control, full health care for all, and higher taxes. Hence, more "socialism', look to Canada.
Which country do you believe is better off? Which do you believe is headed in the right direction?
Indeed Rand was a sociopathic cunt. But its think its important not to represent the whole Tea Party movement under that one single light. Libertarians have some very valid arguments and legitimate grievances which deserved to be heard. Ideological rigidity, either from the left or the right does not serve anybody atm.
Rand is a a pathetic hypocrite whose childish approach to personal social responsibility denies there is a need for personal sacrifice of any kind. In her world the needs of the one is the only consideration. Her novels were works of social-science fiction where the will of an individual is the ultimate morality. The needs of the one always outweigh those of the many in her world. In the real world we are interconnected systemically, this fact is what Rand and her followers can't absorb.
@reaper1147 What does "social responsibility" mean, and why do human beings have it? You misrepresent Rand, rational selfishness is the ultimate morality, not the will of the individual. I may want to take drugs or steal, but that doesn't make it morally good. What the hell does "interconnected systemically" mean?

Ayn Rand ended her life on Social Security and Medicare Benefits. In the end, all her bullshit praised by modern day syncophants... came to nothing. She got lung cancer and couldn't pay for the treatment. She applied for the social programs under another name, (Ann O'Connor) to keep the public from finding out what a complete hypocrite she was! In the end, she was grateful for the greater good because she NEEDED IT. Her Objectivism & "ethical egoism" would have left her penniless in the street!
@CosmicFork Ann O'Connor is her legal name. She had paid taxes and social security her entire working life, so she was entitled to it. Though I agree it may appear shady and it was immoral, but not so much hypocritical.
@thegoodgeneral Rose Wilder Lane refused to collect her social security benefits on principle. In fact she even turned down jobs to avoid paying taxes.
Ayn Rand was a moron who thought she could survive on her own genius but when cancer threatened to wipe out the little bit of wealth she managed to put away for her old age she changed her name and applied for welfare benefits. @32peartree No welfare was actually implemented as part a of keynesian economy that aims to better regulate the macroeconomic system. Nothing to do with communism. It became the solution to the failures of the free market.
No stupid. Welfare and Keynesianism are two different things. Welfare didn't come about to manage the business cycle, idiot. In fact, it didn't come about until Johnson was president. You don't know fhe first goddamn thing about, well, anything.
"No welfare was actually implemented as part a of keynesian economy that aims to better regulate the macroeconomic system."
That statement is wrong. Welfare was an LBJ program and was not developed as a counter-cyclical policy, even though it does serve in that capacity to a degree.
One thing I believe about Ayn Rand, she is a Marxist at heart.
Due to her upbringing in the Soviet Union she absorbed the Marxist economic philosophy. But when she came to the West she did not reject it. She inverted it. In the same way Satanists inverse the Christian theology. Evil becomes good and good, evil.
Personally I reject Marxism for the same reason I reject capitalism. They reduce us to economic entities that must obey economic laws. No choices, so no thank you.
Isn't the tea party largely religious? Ayn Rand is about as hardcore an atheist as humanly possible, neverminding that she was staunchly antiwar, and against the government interfering in peoples social lives. The tea partiers are against repealing don't ask don't tell and are more than happy to defend all the horrible wars we fight. OP, learn what the opposing viewpoint actually is before posting a bunch of shit out of context.
And yet Ayn Rand has created an alternative humanism which appeals to many people on the right. She pulled this off through the market, without the support from government & academia which tends to favor left-liberal humanism.
This woman was cold to the bone, it doesn't surprise me that she never had kids. I can't follow the lead of anyone who has so little interest in the concept of compassion. Would you want to live in a world of Henry Reardens?? Not me... Atlas Shrugged was almost unreadable for me, I barely finished it. Rands own life contadicted her philosophy time and again... it's been well documented. Human beings have feelings, it's that simple. She went too far in her search for the "ideal man"
Jewish nutcase, a Suzy Greenberg... "an artist she may be, but a genius she is not... says she wants to be a sociologist, but she better first get checked by a neurologist."
Rand championed great men first and foremost. Therefore she would be disgusted by druggies like Rush Limbaugh or hack tea party politicians juxtaposing her ideals to fit their flippant agendas.

Remind me again why everyone on Fox News loves her? Oh, because they never actually read the books at all and are just holding her up based on a few cherry-picked points they happened to like. Where have I heard that before?
@7j8i9m """"Ayn Rand: Born in a socialist nation, educated in socialist schools, who took advantage of Medicare and Social Security in her later years""""
Yeah, but she still disliked it, and still said that she wanted compleate libertarianism.
Thats kinda ironic. Going through free school, getting free health care, and then free social security when your old, and then go on to say you dont like it?
@7j8i9m "took advantage of Medicare and Social Security " I see no inconsistency in reaping the benefits of a system that you are forced to pay into, while at the same time arguing that the system is immoral. I live in Canada where we have socialized health care. If I want to see a doctor in this country I must "take advantage" of the system. So because I have seen a doctor under this system I have no right to argue that maybe exchanging money for medical service should not be a crime?
Watch her eyes... Not only was Rand a sociopath, she was most likely a paranoid, delusional schizophrenic as well. That sort of jumpy, shifty, un-natural eye motion is one of the clinical indications of this particularly tragic and debilitating metal illness...
@stereodreamer23 sociopath would probably have a piercing stare and likely glib, so you might want to scratch that off. Sociopaths are those you'd least expect in most cases. Sociopaths love to give excuses and never take responsibility, feed on other's pity
Any one who has followed Ayn Rand's history would know that in a late interview, she talked negatively about joining any kind of "group', whether religious, political or other. So how does this fit the religious rightwing and the teabaggers????
It's funny that conservatives embrace an atheist who considered a gay man one of her most trusted associates, yet they also say those same things are destroying our nation.
Note to Rand Paul - I suspect that the bible and quran have sold a few more copies than Atlas Shrugged - would you be willing to suggest that those books must be true because of their sales figures?
you all are a bunch of idiots except you david. The point is that these politicians ARE following her and then you vote for them. Keep going and we'll have our president
She came to America by shady means and turned around to demonize those who reaped benefits they did not earn legitimately. She also smoked until she died and refused to accept that it caused her lung cancer, but demanded that she be granted the same public health care that she called theft to treat it. How any thinking person can take her seriously is beyond me.
Love the way her bugged out eyes shift around in her skull, like a serial killer plotting his next move. Seeing as she admired William Edward Hickman, this should not be surprising!
Ayn Rand was opposed to everything decent about America. She advocated death for all but a small minority of "worthy" people. This is the most gruesome example of a "death panel" I can imagine. The perfect bride for Adolph Hitler.
Odd that the religious right has embraced an unapologetic, in your face aetheist as their hero. If you dont believe, see an early Phil Donohue interview from the early 80s on youtube
She was a hypocrite in that she took social security payments from the government.
There are insights to be found when we see that these republicans have based their economic priorities on a work of fiction who's author was unable to make her philosophy work in her own life.
She says altruism is immoral because it is a love placed above oneself. I would agree if this were the case, and in the modern Judeo-Christian tradition it may often be (and as a result is is indeed transformed into a not genuine patronising activity). Real altruism is a natural and unavoidable result of loving oneself - but only if one has developed one's intuition, and after one has developed compassion for oneself.
No, it's all about enhancing the prospect of passing one genes on average, indirectly in the case of altruism. you might want to read WD Hamilton and start to understand inclusive fitness.
Her Determinism and monism is good, and I agree. It is like Spinoza's conatus, or Zen Budddhisms being one. However, she is blind to the fact that only externalised rationalism is a form of dualism. Spinoza accounts for that by having his Intuitive (embodied) rational knowledge. Zen Buddhism by it's practicality. As a result, she is an egocentric sociopath, like so many of us!
By now Miss Rand has doubtless spent several thousand lifetimes as intestinal parasite, bacteria, dung-fly, mosquito, and other incarnations suitable to embodiment of her mindset of paranoia and selfishness. I wish her the best on her long road back to another chance at being part of humanity.
Alan Greenspan is a disciple of Rand. This woman had poisoned many minds. The idea that children in the playground motivated by profit would play fair is insane. Ayn Rand is a fraud.
So this is what a hedonistic atheist looks like. I have never seen such a Godless, selfish, unloving creature in all my life. Is this shifty eyed thing a member of the human race?
Here is one of the philosophies I choose to live my life by, "greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".
If the whole world were populated by the likes of Ayn Rand there would be no need for a Medal of Honor for none would be willing to sacrifice for the good of his brother.
What should happen is this video should be passed on to every libertarian on YT who claims Rand did not support their policy platform. Then each time one of the smart assed idiots opens their mouths, Go to the two quotes from Ron and his son Rand Paul and then go SAY WHAT
Ayn Rand died in 1982. whatever discoveries (such as neuroscience, psychology, sociology, medicine, technological advances, etc) were made after that, she wouldn't know anything about. her only education was a bachelor's degree in history that she got in the 1920s. she is overrated.
@SecularNumanist She did. She basically thought they were a bunch of dirty hippies who just happened to have the same economic views as her. Libertarians sure do love her though.
The beatles originally made the song after her. It was titled "all you need is love... You just don't deserve it, so you'll never get it"... But it didn't quite have the same ring to it so they left it at "all you need is love"
Her ideology is just a rehash of Nietzsche in "The Anti-Christ." Nothing original about her. She just "broke it down" so the American middlebrow could understand it.
i think you will find she came from Russia with all their so called social programs (dental care) in the UK we had state dentists and many have terrible teeth, as do many in other in Europe, unlike the teeth of many in the USA.
She looks high and miserable.

meezersfive 7 months ago
It's funny that conservatives embrace an atheist who considered a gay man one of her most trusted associates, yet they also say those same things are destroying our nation.

I enjoyed reading The Fountainhead as a story, but its ideas don't hold water as a political manifesto. And Atlas Shrugged is a snorefest.

Note to Rand Paul - I suspect that the bible and quran have sold a few more copies than Atlas Shrugged - would you be willing to suggest that those books must be true because of their sales figures?

She came to America by shady means and turned around to demonize those who reaped benefits they did not earn legitimately. She also smoked until she died and refused to accept that it caused her lung cancer, but demanded that she be granted the same public health care that she called theft to treat it. How any thinking person can take her seriously is beyond me.

I find it ironic that people like Paul Ryan bitch about the government, but holds a job in the government.

This is a childish argument to make. Those who want small government will need to defend that position in government.

What a rancid ideology!
This woman hated everything that is good about the USA
Which one of the books is about a nutty architect (Howard Roark)?
and the boss's daughter who secretly longs to be raped by him?
Ayn Rand- author of rape-fantasy fiction.
Nice...

If you dont believe, see an early Phil Donohue interview from the early 80s on youtube
digitaldoodler7 8 months ago
She was a hypocrite in that she took social security payments from the government.
There are insights to be found when we see that these republicans have based their economic priorities on a work of fiction who's author was unable to make her philosophy work in her own life.

"The weak are not deserving of love" in zat accent: sounds like social darwinism straight from the Third Reich
richardhod2 8 months ago
She says altruism is immoral because it is a love placed above oneself. I would agree if this were the case, and in the modern Judeo-Christian tradition it may often be (and as a result is is indeed transformed into a not genuine patronising activity). Real altruism is a natural and unavoidable result of loving oneself - but only if one has developed one's intuition, and after one has developed compassion for oneself.
johannes2001 8 months ago
@johannes2001
No, it's all about enhancing the prospect of passing one genes on average, indirectly in the case of altruism. you might want to read WD Hamilton and start to understand inclusive fitness.
AntiSchiff 8 months ago
Her Determinism and monism is good, and I agree. It is like Spinoza's conatus, or Zen Budddhisms being one. However, she is blind to the fact that only externalised rationalism is a form of dualism. Spinoza accounts for that by having his Intuitive (embodied) rational knowledge. Zen Buddhism by it's practicality. As a result, she is an egocentric sociopath, like so many of us!

What a awful ugly person
Hipdudester 8 months ago
By now Miss Rand has doubtless spent several thousand lifetimes as intestinal parasite, bacteria, dung-fly, mosquito, and other incarnations suitable to embodiment of her mindset of paranoia and selfishness. I wish her the best on her long road back to another chance at being part of humanity.

Haha, what a load of shit. Amazing that anyone pays the slightest attention to this self-obsessed crank.

She's a woman who demonized socialized welfare and health care, and then relied on it later in her life. Typical Libertarian hypocrite.
SecondMarlowe 8 months ago

@Zyworski That's an insult to atheists. I'm not a religious person at all myself, but loath this woman.

franks2732 9 months ago
Ayn Rand died in 1982. whatever discoveries (such as neuroscience, psychology, sociology, medicine, technological advances, etc) were made after that, she wouldn't know anything about. her only education was a bachelor's degree in history that she got in the 1920s. she is overrated.
exbronco1980 9 months ago
@exbronco1980 If you read "Atlas Shrugged" you'll find she also didn't have Clue One about how businesses actually work.
