@xXUSMCGRIFFXx Yeah it should work just fine. Most people think the wax may foul up the barrel but our barrel was clean after shooting over 75 rounds of these things.
@taofledermaus Alright, I'm taking my Stevens Bolt action .410 out with me and I'm gonna test some of these out. Thanks to you and iraqveteran8888 for the great ideas and inspirations of some cheap ammo alternatives!
@MrGarrett1911 I appreciate it but I still have an Xbox 360 to shoot up and a ton of other broken things to shoot up, and not that much room to store it all!
In the many videos showing these wax slugs, I see people chambering a single shell then firing, then chambering a single shell. Does the wax cause issues when cycled and that is why I keep seeing single loads being fired instead of the gun being fully loaded and cycled? I'm sure I haven't seen ALL the videos but this single fire method seems to be the trend.
@GeraldLaz38 I didn't have any issues loading up my Mossberg with these. I made my waxers so the wax was flush with the end of the shell, then I ran a file over it. You want to make sure there is no pellets sticking up that might strike the primer on the shell ahead of it in the feed tube. I also made sure there were no wax drips left on the exterior which would foul things up.
@umulius71 If he was near a river or lake, he'd be firing steel shot instead of lead. I think the environment is okay in this situation...but your concern for mother earth is appreciated. : )
since it is so condense wouldent it just give it a major dent and blow it back? to much power would cause that right? i would think standar slugs are the best because the cover large area and do necisarily "blow them back".
@taofledermaus you say it tumbles even at short range...have you tried shooting through a rifled slug barrel? just wondering if it would help stabilize it..or maybe it would just tear the wax slug apart?
@cliftonrupp I haven't tried shooting them through a rifled barrel or a choke, so it is hard to guess exactly how they would behave. We'll see what we can do in the next test.
@LouWut Just the lead shot and wax are mixed together and poured back into the shell. The shell itself molds the round. Very easy to make, and none of the wax goes past the wad cup.
@MarcoLueftner14 I'm a little concerned about your mental health. I've been on YT for 6 years and I have never seen anyone repeat the same message on 100 videos. Weirdest behavior I have ever seen. Sorry to block you but someone had to put the brakes on you.
@ImFromBog They work just fine out of my 20 gauge though as with any custom shell I highly recommend single loading via the ejection port as one small piece of shot can jam your gun should it get free.
@jozzilion I've seen folks in videos shoot these out of modified chokes. My shotgun has no choke and the round doesn't have to squeeze out the barrel. When it does that I have seen where some of the bb's are broken away from the slug. Iraqveteran who has a lot more experience than I do with these has shot them out of every type of gun with a lot of success.- and safety
@KironStrife If I can find someone with a rifled barrel I'll see if they'll let me shoot these through their gun. They might not be strong enough and might spin themselves into pieces. Some people are fussy about stuff like that. I'm going to experiment with making the back ends of the slugs a little lighter to see if we can gain a bit of stability.
@taofledermaus well the spin rate of a bullet really isn't all that tremendous. it's just enough rotation to keep it stable, they're not really spinnig like tops. besides the wax wouldn't be gripping the rifling the wad would. and maybe not even a rifled barrel. maybe a rifled choke would do the job.
@2:22 those WE phones are worth good money unless its a fake knockoff @2:50 "the number you have breeched has been permantly disconnected,no other infomation is available,!"
@taofledermaus did you ever get any FTF or FTE ??? that is brutal by the way !!! you shoud try tape slugs too you can take the wad out, tape around it pour the shot back in then tape the top and put it back in the shell ...... idk if they work that great .... dont use too much tape tho it will be hard to put it back in :) id love to see a video of those see what kinda damage they can do
@jacobninja25 They were very reliable. I've read that some people who have made these have had issues if they leave any wax that has dripped down the sides of the shells, but that all can be removed with a fingernail or a knife. Overall these things really impressed us and with their cost and simplicity, it would be hard to improve upon them. They are that good. I'd actually trust them for home defense.
I can't wait to start seeing licence plates that say 'Insured by Crayola'. Or the words 'We Don't Dial 911' printed on a Crayola box background. Sweet.
Hey a fellow lefty! Clever too like the rest of us. These truly are 12ga Glasers, awesome. I'd like to see what they do in a gelatin block. That would be uber-cool.
@14goldmedals Looks like I will have to make some geletin, I was hoping TNoutdoors would do it but I think this is too unconventional and wild for him.
a other great vid :-) i have used wax bound projectiles with great results with my air powered projectile launcher ;-) i found small 1" nails/tacks has very interesting results. they basically bound together top to bottom like a 180 degree bunch of flowers and set in wax
@dramey03 I have a friend who is an IT guy who saves them for me from computers he works on. Some of them are my own hard drives from old computers I upgraded from.
Those slugs do some amazing damage. Next time you get out to shoot (since it seems that they went straight through everything you shot) it would be interesting to actually stop one of them and see how intact the slug remains. Seems like the wax holds the shot together extremely well
Defrag your HD for the win....lol. Great work Jeff. Looking to pick up a Casio EX-F1 soon and do some slow mo stuff myself. I will be sure to cite you as my inspiration for doing so.
@Iraqveteran8888 These things are probably the most fun round I have ever shot. You'd definitely have a lot of fun doing your stuff with a high speed camera. It would be a perfect match. Thanks for stopping by.
im starting to want to get a pump action. all these cutshell videos from iraqveteran and then these from you are making me want to play around, but I dont think my 1187 would like it to much.
@cressy7isback The wax isn't going to damage the barrel. I doubt it would even stick to it. I've modified the wad and cut off the petals etc. and even made some "magnum" loads of about 1.5oz by shortening the wad. I'll post more stuff as time goes on, these things are just too dang fun to shoot!
The one thing I have not tried with these yet is a rifled slug barrel. Out of the 7 shotguns I have, not one of them has an extra rifled barrel. I have to wonder if using one might stabilize it somewhat. I doubt it, the projectile is just unstable, but you never know.
@CasioEXF1Freak It's hard to say. If they spin they might fly apart... I'm content with how they perform -even if they are just for short range. Imagine using them for home defense....
I wonder if screwing a small wood screw a small way into the bottom of the wad cup and pouring/casting the shot/crayon mixture around it would hold things together and help with the accuracy... only problem would be the wad petals opening mid flight and acting like an air brake! lol wonder if the crayon would stick to them much..
@joehunt1980 I'm thinking that some of the instability is happening when it is transitioning from supersonic to subsonic- which happens pretty fast with these things. I imagine it is possible to pour a bit of wax in the shell first, let it cool a bit and then pour the heavy wax/pellet mixture on top of that so they actually have a heavy end.
@taofledermaus Hey now thats really thinking! lol you could perhaps experiment on percentages of wax/lead vs stability.. You definitely have the right equipment :-j
I have in mind to make a bullet mold to cast a wax slug with 4 flights in the tail of it kind of like a ww2 bomb... Might give it a go next time im in my workshop
@joehunt1980 I've made up a box or two of the lightened-rear (for lack of a better term) loads. I shortened the wadding so the slugs are abourt 1/4" longer. I'm not sure how well the solid wax will hold up. In some of the slow motion shots I noticed as the slugs fly through the air you can see a light vapor of the wax vaporizing off the slug from the air friction, since they are going super sonic. Not sure when I will be able to test them again.
@taofledermaus I wonder if the friction from the barrel, through the wad petals, is also making the slug melt a little as its fired, A quick fix on that could be to make up a paper patch by putting a rolled up piece if printer paper into the wad before pouring in the wax/shot mixture, Im guessing it will probably stick to it too... Quite an interesting topic, Will be looking forward to more videos when you get back into it :-j
I've watched with some interest the vids that Iraqveteran posted and you've obviously taken things to another level with crayons! Excellent vid - keep up the good work. I hope that other folks give this a try as well.
@imbok Most of the videos I have seen on these they are shooting them at paper. Once we started shooting at harder targets, we really had an appreciation for these things. Definitely an "ah haaa! " moment.
@georgeevans18 No, but Iraqveteran explained to me in a PM that you can shoot these waxers out of anything, even with a choke. I trust Eric and Barry's experience with them
@jrmyscttwds The wad seems to shed away a few feet after leaving the barrel -most of the time. But I was thinking of pouring just wax in first, let it cool and then pour the wax/pellet mixture on top of that to see if it will hold together. Then we'd have a heavy end and it might fly straighter.
@jrmyscttwds I just made 50 wax slugs, I want to tell you about a video I saw that I could not find again, or I would have made them that way. Dude cut the end off and poured the shot out, then he pulled the wad out, then wrapped it with one piece of clear box tape, then poured his shot back in, and capped it with the same tape and put the whole thing back in the shell.
I was thinking about the accuracy problem you've got, and do you reckon that you could get the shot only in the nose? Maybe pour the slug with lots of wax, then rapidly invert it? If you did that it might drag stabilise with the dense part (where the shot is) at the front.
@drew79s You definitely got me thinking. Just pouring in straight wax first, let it cool a little and then dump the wax/pellet mix on top of that might be easier. I think the wax would fuse together but the pellets would stay on top.
@brainfarth IMHO These would make a poor hunting round. As a home defense round, probably the most brutal thing out there. These are like frangible safety slugs.
I made these rounds as well, but instead of wax or crayons I used glue sticks from a glue gun. Works just as well. Also instead of shot, I used steel mini hooks

get a liter oflatex rubber (i couldn't find it by the gallon) and cast some slugs out of it.
i made a small roll of paper to insert in the hull 1st, then pour in the latex.
at 20-30 feet it is like getting hit with a tiny water balloon at 800 mph.
it will break the skin through jeans or t shirt but really just a bad bruise.
you'll never find them either, they splatter into nothingness.
past 30 feet though there is almost zero accuracy.

@ALLThingsEastCoast i meant was there a choke in the barrel?
georgeevans18 1 month ago
@georgeevans18 No, but Iraqveteran explained to me in a PM that you can shoot these waxers out of anything, even with a choke. I trust Eric and Barry's experience with them

@taofledermaus ok thanks :)

You'll be able to increase the accuracy by quite a bit if you can manage to make the wadding fly with the wax slug instead of separate.
Don't ask me how to do that, though... lol

@jrmyscttwds The wad seems to shed away a few feet after leaving the barrel -most of the time. But I was thinking of pouring just wax in first, let it cool and then pour the wax/pellet mixture on top of that to see if it will hold together. Then we'd have a heavy end and it might fly straighter.
taofledermaus 1 month ago
@jrmyscttwds I just made 50 wax slugs, I want to tell you about a video I saw that I could not find again, or I would have made them that way. Dude cut the end off and poured the shot out, then he pulled the wad out, then wrapped it with one piece of clear box tape, then poured his shot back in, and capped it with the same tape and put the whole thing back in the shell.

@hambonedodge34 I like that idea. Sort of encapsulate the shot with the tape. Did they hold together when he shot it?

I'd be interested in seeing how a wax slug would work with flechettes instead of normal bird shot...
OrdinatorMan 1 month ago
@OrdinatorMan It would probably have less damage because the steel flechettes would be lighter than the lead.

I think the wax would fuse together but the pellets would stay on top.
taofledermaus 1 month ago
Nice. How would you compare those to lead slugs? Also, would the wax melt out of the bird during cooking?
brainfarth 1 month ago
@brainfarth IMHO These would make a poor hunting round. As a home defense round, probably the most brutal thing out there. These are like frangible safety slugs.
taofledermaus 1 month ago
@brainfarth There would not be enough of the bird left to cook!

@JohannWendt I've been watching WAY too much Top Gear. lol

@taofledermaus you can never watch too much Top Gear. I now need to make these...but first I need a shotgun. Great Video

Ferocious rainbow all the way.

Woah... Wax is dangerous!

I made these rounds as well, but instead of wax or crayons I used glue sticks from a glue gun. Works just as well. Also instead of shot, I used steel mini hooks
saik0pod 1 month ago
@saik0pod Lol, that sounds nasty! I bet the glue sticks hold up in a hot car much better too.
