  • I am learning this kata now after having earned my shodan last month. I wish I could move as fast as Valdesi sensei, and I have nothing but respect for him. However, what I don't like about sport karate in general is exemplified in this video. Yes, he's incredibly fast, but there is no flow to the kata, no story. It's more of an attitude than a technical thing. In sports karate, though, he is one of, if not THE, best.

  • VALDESI is the best. i love to se him!

  • @MsKaratekid007 no,Milon is the best!

  • fantastic form, good strong deep stance, full power, good spirit and its so hard to do katas like this full power full speed with this crispness and accuracy

  • To fast for my taste and why long pauses? he must do sport karate and not karate do like I grew up knowing plus the judges that may not know what to luck for or does technique not count?

  • @amitchell171 What level of Karate did you attain? If you are a dedicated karate-ka you would know that this is an excellent demonstration of speed, power, technique and accuracy. Fast techniques must be fast and slow techniques must be slow. Pauses are pauses for a reason. It's not only about correct technique, but having an understanding of speed and slow. If you were taught karate with no variation of speed, you got taught wrong. Ossu!

  • wonder what this looks like sped up!?! ;)

  • sick!

  • he's the 6th kyu grade, very accurate!

  • the man is world champion that as a fact says enough osu!

  • how am i disrespectful for practicing karate???

  • is this shotokan exactly?

  • 6th kyu

  • great !! the only problem are his shotos.... i thing in that way he has to work i litle more. love your katas!!

  • Amazing kata, amazing focus

  • @ilovetwilight12341 this performance is technically perfect, the strength is correct and the stances are stable, but please, PLEASE, don't you dare call it a kata. katas were thought as to represent an imaginary fight against many opponents, every move, every second of every pause means something...the way he performs it is distorted, this "kata" doesn't have the same significance as the true one, it's too theatrical and exaggerated...it's a bit like singing "macbeth" with hip hop beats

  • for anyone who doesn't think his kata is awsm, then u dont no what karate is. There is nothing and I mean nothing to criticise about his kata. Its perfect. Best kata ever. This is what karate is about...strength...concentration...disipline...focus.

  • @ilovetwilight12341 it's true that his performance is technically perfect, the strength is correct and the stances are stable, but PLEASE, don't you dare call it a kata. katas were thought as to represent an imaginary fight against many opponents, every move, every second of every pause meant something...the way he performs it is distorted, this "kata" doesn't have the same significance as the true one, it's too theatrical and exaggerated...it's a bit like singing macbeth with hip hop beats..

  • O.o... too fast to follow...

  • Fantastic!

  • I can see KWF yahara's showdow in this kata. He does twist hip a lot. If he dont do each move so fast he can twist a bit more and give more power. I dont like the timing, too fast, pulse too long. However, it takes alot muscle strenght to perform like that. people critic he toon kata for competition. I see he is doing real combat instead of performing it.

  • Also sorry for any spelling mistakes. (english my second leguage).

  • Well I will add what I personally think... and this is just my view. The old masters trained very hard on their karate but also these sport Karatekas do train very hard. How they do Kata is just what is been asked for by judges. Choose a path... traditonal and martial or Sports. Your choose ... WKF is here to stay and do their thing.... Tradional Karatekas will never render to this.... so the clue is to respect one another. Remember to have a clean heart.

  • All these people saying how shit this kata is are probably just armchair karateka and don't know what the fuck they are talking about. I was always taught that karate is dynamic, it is still evolving. We aren't meant to be doing it exactly the same as it was being done 50 or 60 years ago. Without evolution it stagnates and dies. Also kata is a very personal thing and very open to interpretation, we all have our own styles that suit our abilities, body types, physical restrictions etc

  • @ryjad27....why hasn't Osaka won a world championship? the spirit speaks for itself. Jealousy running like crazy through karate is what i see here. Shame on you! the Masters would be disappointed....

  • @angeltears71 Osaka has won plenty. Read his profile page on the JKA Website. I don't blame Valdesi, by the way. I blame the judges. They reward massively long, over-dramatic pauses and flurries of incomplete techniques, with high scores. Personally, i'd like prefer to watch something with a lttle more personality invested in it. Valdesi, and other modern competitors do their Kata like this, purely because it gets the marks.

  • Lastly..shame on you if you are jealous..that is not the way of the Karate-Do...this is not football or soccer..it is a art..not a sport...be true to Karate-Do

  • I have met Valdesi :) He is a world champion in more ways then one!..His techinique is not always perfect for his body..the movements and the strength..are true all the way!! Empi? he has the best form of anyone i have seen...and yes he is a world champion! sounds like someone is a bit jealous..maybe more then one

  • 91 persons got beaten by Luca's Empi.

  • The William Shatner of the Karate world. This is not Kata. it is acting. Soul-less and empty.Watch Osaka, and feel the intent.

  • In Neustadt, I was already two times during his training

  • I think he is one off the best people in the sport karate

bevore 3 days he was in germany i saw his katas and ghis style. I like him really *-*

And his punches have such an impact.... brilliant

  • this guy is excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is nothing wrong with speed , unless the kata is meant to be slow. I like the contrast from fast to slow and vice versa.

  • needs to be smoother, its the kata of the swallow.

  • I want to learn that kata soo bad!!!! O: I can do Bassai Dai and that one only but I've just graduated from my 2. Kyu

  • @LinaLSN your a brown belt

  • @abomb10 I know? o.O

  • @LinaLSN see somebody knows what rank you are in japanese

  • @abomb10 And what it that supposed to mean?

  • @LinaLSN just saying that not all people have lost the tradition in karate but yeah i know this kata

  • @abomb10 Listen, I'm sorry but I have NO clue at all what you meant by saying that I was a brown belt and your other comments. If I have in any way been offensiveor something I did not mean to be that.

  • @LinaLSN its alright I just got my Yon kyu the other day just you know exchanging Japanese alittle

  • godddd he'S amazinnnngggggggg!!!!!xxx

  • Pur rispettando lo stile personale di esecuzione di un kata, eseguito in questo modo non si apprezza in pieno l'armonia del kata stesso. Non mi piace per niente fatto in questo modo.

  • First of all for all of you that do practice Karate, I think it shows how truly disrspectful you are. You preach ethics and the true meaning of Karate-Do, yet you insult one of its best. None of you have met Valdesi, and Im sure none of you can move like him! You guys are jokes, if your so adamant of showing TRUE Karate, post a video of yourself. Instead of preaching about the Japanese masters on youtube. He seems like a nice guy, met him in person, so go judge someone else you idiots.

  • @shotojojo1986 One of the true masters : " Sensei Asai" said recognise bullshit.

    This is bullshit not karatedo.

If people claim to do karate and then post videos like this and call themseleves world champions or masters i would definately comment on it.

He might be a good person but i dont judge people by their personality but by their technique and training.

  • @shotojojo1986 im disrespectful because i practice karate? your a tool

  • @shotojojo1986 First of all this, kata is horrible. Secondly, what the hell does having met the man or his personality have to do with anything? This kata is horribly rushed for no other reason other than to look flashy and cutesy for the pretty boys who perform in this joke of a karate federation. Believe me when I say that the mousse in his hair is more important to these idiots than any karate technique. That whole federation is a joke! So please ...!

  • @shotojojo1986

Whether he is a nice guy or not is irrelevant. This video demonstrates "sport" karate at its finest. Kata meant to be a display first and foremost. I am sure this guys karate is amazing but this style of kata at tournaments pisses me off. There is speed but little kime or power. Hallmarks of the art.

  • @shotojojo1986 i met him but i cant move like him xD HE IS BRILLIANT!

  • @shotojojo1986 - I don't know how someone can possible criticize Valdesi. His kata skills are fantastic and very traditional. Wonderful to see after almost being sick from watching "xtreme martial arts" competition. This is beautiful.

  • Stupid performance, speed with no meaning.

    Check JKA kata!!

  • there is an mistake in the KATA

  • vorrei vedere voi -.-

  • Why the Shinzentai was so Opened?

In Zenkutso basis, why the back foot is so unstable?

In Kiba basis, why the knees wasn't pointed more to outside?

And what was that "Sily Jump" ? OMG.

Anyone who is in 3rd. Kyu yet Knows it: the base is the most important thing in a kata. More important than the impressive speed of arm movements (which were made without using the waist, by the way).

It seemed more a race than a kata.

  • @dudavilanova The jump forms part of the Kata Empi. If you do not understand its place in this Kata, then perhaps some study of the bunkai for Empi may dissolve the obvious arrogance you are demonstrating here.

  • @DragonCloud3000 I'm not one of the bests. I'll never be. But the fact that i'm not so good, don't erase my hability of see.

YES, Luca is VERY good. But this isn't his best Kata. It's the faster, but not the best. There is a lot of video of his better performs here in youtube... that's NOT one of them.

There is a jump in Empi (Flying Swallow, duh!). But this jump isn't good. It's low, he moves to much the hands, and bended the chest to the legs.

  • @dudavilanova you should practice more and you'll see how a kata really look like executed by a 3 dan+ master...that was not a race...that was real speed that's the correct version of a kata...when it's slow it's slow and when it's a punch it has to be as fast as it can. Sorry for my poor english

  • @saburexno1 (my english is very poor too...) Let me say it AGAIN: I LIKE the Katas of Luca Valdesi... He IS a very good Karate-ka. What I'm Saying is: THIS IS'NT the best Kata of Him. This IS NOT the best video of him in the Internet.

  • @dudavilanova

That's HIS Shizentai, who cares how open it is?

Kiba: You are thinking of the wrong stance, Shiko Dachi will have knees pointing outward, Kiba has knees and feet pointing forward.

Zenkutzu: unstable where? If you mean at 0:26 that's not zenkutsu dachi, that's Sokutsu Dachi.

And the "sily jump" is part of the kata.

Also, learn the difference between rotation and vibration, he does both and very well.

Finally: If you know karate, why do you criticise? Ossu!

  • @RainBirdLori

    Ok... I get it...

    My bad.

    Sorry.

  • awful karate. no kime. no bunkai. no stability. no power. it's a fast forward stupid demonstration for kids and ignorants. any trained karateka would look his feet and body... not his arms moving fast. if you want true Karate, see Kase, Enoeda, Tanaka or Yahara. they would kill this guy with a single (and less fast!!!!!) punch.

  • Oss

  • @jvp0208 cut the crap....l would like to see how u do empi...

  • As a performance his "kata" is quite impressive. But the real gist of karate is missing! There is no sense in his dance it is just for the show. His extra wide joy dachi perfectly reflects his showman attitude..

  • @zsozsa I agree, whilst the kata as a show is very impressive, i feel the bunkai has been lost, perhaps here, speed is'nt everything, if this is all he has, how will he progress or develop with age

  • ...I don't even feel like his kiai comes from exerting force under your bellybutton, which is the right way to do it if you understand its purpose. Am I being foolish or is this guy who's the fool?

  • Ridiculous !!! With all respect that someone give the time to practice "karate",performing kata this way is turning karate in to gymnastic!!!! This performance is NOTHING TO DO WITH KARATE-DO!!!! no true spirit, no true kime and no true POWER!! just speed with out control...how shame.....

  • lo hace mal que panal

  • poco ! :)

  • ovo nema veze sa japanskim karateom samo skup brzih pokreta mozete ga voliti koliko hocete ali nije ovo karate! pola blokova nebi izblokiralo nista ovo je wkc svjetski sampion!

  • Way too fast and no technique at all, impressive athletic skills, but terrible Kata

  • ue eu to postando comentario ta aparecendo que um cara xamado djboca022 qeu ta postando me ajudem pq eu sou o luiskumite680 nao dj boca022

  • luca seu kata é muto fera se ver esse comentario por favor me diga como vc gosegue dar aqueles lulos nos katas e qual seu treinamento de kata?

    oss!

  • thank you oss!

  • empi!ham meu kata tem uqe xegar perto desse nivel pra mim ter uma chance de vencer oss!

  • @srki9993 tacno...ovi koji ga nisu videli uzivo kako rade mogu samo da lupaju...

  • interesting, but this is NOT empi. A kata is more than the sum of its movements. And what tournament was this? it would NOT win in an ISKF or JKA tournament. Kata is timing, breathing, bunkai, etc. Impressive athleticism, speed. But NOT empi.

  • @ndileonardo : waaw, awsome..

    do you can do beter?

  • valdesija volimo u Srbiji vise nego bilo sta...

  • Knock off all the armchair quarterbacking. He is very talented and works very hard. Give the guy a break.

  • His timing is too fast.....Loss of technique.....Huge difference between this and the japanese masters........"Where it all started" ;)) Os

  • He is obviously skilled, but I personally, don't like his way of doing empi. He put a lot in strength, so his technique i suffering, like he's focused on only few parts.

  • I'm not saying that I couldn't learn a thing or two from his performance. But for the WKF to accept kata of this type is an abomination. This deserves nothing but low scores all around.

  • Nothing against Mr. Valdesi, he's obviously a very skilled and practiced athlete, but on a cold, dark night walking the wharves in Sapporo, I think I'd rather have Masatoshi Nakayama with me. Again, nothing against Mr. Valdesi. Very impressive performance. But I don't see duende here. Could just be me....

  • He's very good.

His wrist in bent in shuto uke (look as he stands up at the end he uncocks his wrist), and his gedan barai is sometimes too high (should be gedan not chudan).

This kata should move like a swallow in flight high then low and swoop like that. His timing is not consistent with the kata.

Of course he has very good control of his centre, and very steady on his feet (especially given the surface). Not perfect but very good.

  • THUMBS UP!!! If you think the people who got the highest rating comments SUCK!!!

  • @acrocanthosaurus4 totally agree with you. these guys think they're some all mighty sensei's and better than him. Valdesi is one of the best karateka's in the world. he has an unbeliveable tehnique and speed. these guys should stop criticizing him because he is better in executing any kata than all of us together here. people stop with the negative comments and work on your own tehnique and your kata's. a true karateka should be humble and not arrogant. other than this is a disgrace to karate os

  • @banic991 I can tell that you are a great person, thank you for replying!!

  • @banic991 Try this one on for size ... "A true Karateka should practice true Karate and not some europeanized hair gel infused, narcissistic, hyper speed, pretentious BS!".

  • It´s great. Has a good technique and he is incredibly fast. Really has a very good relation between technique and speed (he don´t "eat" no one technique), but each kata has its HYOSHI (time, rhythm) and he doesn´t respect it.

    But is really good.

  • Luca is incredible. Why do people criticize greatness? To make themselves feel better?

  • the screaming girl kinds of ruin everything, that's no kiai, that's bullshit

  • This man shows a lot of skill, nice!

To bad other people that don't even nearly have the skill he does hand out such outrageously immature comments.

    Good job!

  • L.O.L !!!! It's logic that he likes a robot because the WORLD'S KATA are robot !!! Sorry I'm french and ... That's all !

  • @jvp0208@ I don't agree with you. It's shotokan style ,maybe you do wadoriou or an other style (I'm french sorry for mistakes).

  • really fast, but he does a lot of unecessary movement inbetween technique transitions

  • Hi. I just wanted to ask, if somebody knows, what´s the name of the belts that Luca wears(the red one and the blue one) on competitions. I know that´s Adidas but if I want to buy it I need to be more concrete ;-) Can somebody help me with that? Thanks.

  • cool! i can learn from this :D

i just learned Empi in my dojo.

  • It's amazing how many people dislike Valdesi, still he is a great athlete IMHO.

  • @karatekatatraining fantastic athlete... athlete being the operative word... karate-ka? maybe... well see how he progresses without the competition career

  • hm...it's true...like a robot...and it ain't too good...i think there's no focus...

  • While the timing and the speed is right, i feel like it lacks some strength...

That and the startup's wrong, the left leg should be the one closing in to the right, and no the right leg to the left

  • if you think he lacks strength, let him hit you and you'll find out that physics was right.

    force=mass X acceleration

  • Woahh, is this Really the proper timing for Empi ?

  • Wow no wonder he World Champion

  • spectacular, but he does sport, not karate

  • this is the better empi that i never seem

  • Enpi

  • I wouldn't be proud of this sh*t... fast but full of technical failures. and this is the world champion? lol

  • Não consigo engolir o estilo de fazer katas do Lucas. É Rápido porem eu não consigo ver Kime em seus movimentos... Pode ser que eu esteja extremamamente errado...

  • 46-54... pure perfection!

  • shit! mma and ufc are best!!!

  • by what federation you are?

    i'm from Shtotokan in Switzerland!

  • he ent no milon

  • The ppl who like this well look back on it years from now and laugh at how ridiculous it is!

  • In the competition you must allways wear red or blue belt. One who starts first is aka(red), and the second is shiro(blue)

  • lol stupid system. people should be able to wear their own black belt.

  • Maybe it's just my computer but is he wearing a red belt?

  • @Insidiousemoboy1 yes sensari can wear red or black belt !!

  • di che federazione siete ?!

  • Its so funny to think that this guy has become a "world champion" and literally can't fight at all.

  • excellent one of valdesi ! :D

  • Mai visto un karateka così veloce, semplicemente SPETTACOLARE!

  • Alot of ppl r saying its to fast and blah blah, but if he is going this fast, if he would to be attack i think his speed will be OP for any attacker. his speed and deep stances shows hes been working long and hard, even if he isnt doing the kata tradition style. if one of my student would preform it like this at their black belt test i would pas them.

  • This is way too fast, more like a robot. Impressive for speed, but I don't like it.

  • @jvp0208 Dude, Valdesi is one of the most amazing kata guys out there. Don't diss him, it is his personal way of kata, if you have been in karate for any length of time, you would know that everyone has their own way of doing a kata.

  • @jvp0208 thats amazing how dare you say thtts like a robot? good strong SHOTOKAN technique.....THTS HOW WE ROLL!!!!!

  • I agree with tapiola. This is not traditionnal karate, he's very speed , amazing but i doubt about effects. I prefer my shotokai karate

  • I agree with tapiola. This is not traditionnal karate, he's very speed , amazing but i doubt about effects. I prefer my shotokai karate

  • This guy makes me laugh :)

hes a godan and treats karate as a sport.. makes you wonder how they give out belts and ranks these days... sigh.

    sports karate. :/

    -kj

  • @shotokankjs Hey, you DO know that there IS competition way of doing a kata, AND actual application way of doing a kata??? Valdesi just changed it so that he could do it for tournaments. Belts and ranks aren't given out recklessly, especially your Dan ranks. And yeah, sports karate isn't all of karate but it is a BIG part of it too. So, shut the hell up, cuz you apparently have no clue what the hell you are talking about!

  • @Sci7890000CAJ

How long you been training kid? 20 years or so?

Karate is not a sport. Only most armchairwarriors would find this speed kata BS cool.

There is no kime and stabilitiy in his techniques. His punches will bounce off any decent karateka who trains daily.

WKF and many of the participants in it are just full of shit. You cannot shut me up the same way i cannot punch u right now. I would like to see luca's punch do damage to a makiwara! lol. it would break his hand!

  • @shotokankjs Question then. Then how the hell do you explain that he was the world CHAMPION and you weren't??? btw, this is my new account, instead of Sci7890000CAJ.... Yea, think about that question. If he isn't amazing, how the hell did he get to be a CHAMPION and not a chump like you?

  • @ninjachika789 World Champion of what? WKF? wkf is touch and tag and acrobatic forms of katas.

    U call that karate?

he might be amazing at showing off his flexibility and agility. But when it comes to actual karate hes no where.

A few things for you to actually think about. KIME, DACHI WAZA , ZANSHIN , MUSHIN , etc

If you knew anything about REAL KARATE... you would notice that his punches are way off. His elbow rotates outwards when he punches.

Hes a result of another MC DOJO.

  • @ninjachika789

Lets talk about you. How long have you been training? Like a week or month?

  • @shotokankjs How about like 10 years?? You??

  • @ninjachika789 twice that of yours kid.

I been teaching for a decade now. Let me know when you get there and finally understand how karate works.

  • @Sci7890000CAJ Totally agree with you man

  • @shotokankjs makes us traditional karatekas disappointed doesnt it :\?

  • @shotokankjs I get hit for all my belts lol I don't get them gave to me but I know what you mean I watched a black belt test and wondered why he didn't get hit but that was dudes son so I guess that makes sense

  • 1:32 I cant believe how perfect is his position.

  • nice!! It loks like a Ballet.......No Karate at all.

    This is just theatre.

  • SI SCRIVE ENPI , NO EMPI

  • Respect....

  • Bloody incredible that's all I can say. Near perfect technique, speed, power the lot. And his stances are rock solid. If that does not sit with traditional values, what does? Do not confuse the setting with what the man is actually doing. Judge what you see him do, not where he is doing it.

  • balla para las tantas verciones q hay esta esta bien pero estetipo exagera en cuestion de dar tiempo a la cata q oriible

  • @mymyharlow Traditionally no, hip level is all that is required for side kick, or slightly higher for rib range. The fact that he is able to display a kick to the temple, with speed, and power, is an exemplary show of his hard work and dedication to the art of Karate. By examining his kick, you can clearly see he trains every day, to the max.

My view on kicks to the head? I wouldn't punch you in the foot...

  • Just because it is sport karate, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve well mention. This was one of the best Empi Kata I have seen performed, and has 370k hits - it deserves some props. I've been studying 14 years, and WISH I could move that skilfully. You don't know the man, so don't make judgments to think he knows nothing about karate.

We all train under one sun.

  • I my opinion, his kosa-dachi is wrong

  • @DonLeone That is your opinion, and you should reserve such things to yourself. Celebrate the ethic of Karate, instead of spit on it.

  • u can barely see the steps hes doing, i personally dnt favor it too much

  • what style of karate is this???????/

  • @OXCerberusX0

    sport-karate...

  • @DonLeone im impressed. I study in gkr, i want to do kyokushin or shotokan, somthing traditional but unfortunately there's no where local.

  • @OXCerberusX0 valdesi's style is shotokan

  • @OXCerberusX0 Shotokan

  • @mymyharlow what sidekick?

  • winderful well donde senor luca

  • he has got the best karate style in the world

    shotokan

  • "valdesi is perfect" isn't true, he do aisciò when he had do shutò.

  • He's quick

  • Between the summer of 1974 and today I saw only one man with his speed , strong moves and perfect form and that is Eric Lee Klepac of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. He exhibits the true Shotokan Style.
