Interesting, did not know that the voice on the show was different from the record. I miss the accent here, too - letter people were kinda scary. At least our childhoods weren't nearly as sanitized as the 80's (and still are, even moreso). Heck, I'll take creepy ol' letter people over care bears, rainbow bright, or nickelodeon any day.
Yes, on the TV show. This song is from the record that came out a few years before the show, and somehow Miss A is the only one whose voice on the show was even close to what she sounded like on the record.
@Lycanthrope777 I had a HUGE crush on Mr. R. Maybe it was his accent, maybe it was his rubber-band sadism, or maybe it was him with three letter girls till the point of exhaustion, I don't know, but it sexually scarred me for life. (jk)
I'll never forget, my kindergarten teacher putting in the video for Mr. R, and then 2 minutes later stopping the tape, telling us "we would not be watching this one".
i am in 3d grade but i hated mr.R I HAVE SINCE kindergarten but like still like mr.x he is cool and nice for kindergarten and all the other but mr.r is so mean.
I remember this crazy sadistic guy...Seriously, why did he rip rubberbands and give everyone "a roaring pain"? Jeez, just relistening to this song creeps me out!
Hey, it's better than the crappy new version of the Letter People- they changed his rubber bands to rainbow ribbons. That's messed up on a few different levels...
I really hated Mr. R! He was so scary! Don't you think his song can be scary for kindergarten? If It was still the 1980's and I'm still a Kindergarten I will be so scared of Mr. R and his song!!! :O
Mr. R's song makes him sound like the crazed villain in a melodrama...considering that the show portrays him as a "temperamental artist" character, that kind of fits him. Great job!
Terrific pic of Mr. R! It looks very anime-inspired. As far as disliking him goes, at first I did, but his song grew on me. My mother thought it sounded like something left over from "Fiddler on the Roof", and since that's one of my favorite shows, well...
The picture is anime-inspired; most of what I draw is anime. I thought Mr. R was the perfect one to draw that way because his eyes almost look anime-esque already. I've done a few other drawings of him (like one where he's holding a strawberry shortcake- the food, not the scary doll), but they're crappy and didn't make it into this video. I just realized how funny it would be to Photoshop a picture of his poster to put bullet holes in it- man, is that ever a funny memory of mine...
Hope you didn't catch too much heat from your teachers for "shooting" Mr. R! The 'black background' pic of him is the one I had in 1st grade, and they did a REAL slap-dash job editing his face so he didn't look so mean.
I didn't get in too much trouble; the teacher just said if we did it again she would put the poster away (which was bad because our favourite thing to do was make words with the posters). I'm shocked we didn't get in more trouble, since the punishments at that school were bad (detention was an hour of cleaning the bathroom).
That's interesting that they edited his face. Was it actually printed with a different face, or did someone cover it or something?
It was actually printed with a different face. Our poster of Mr. R had him with his traditional mean look. The smaller black background cards each kid got had the different face. It even got to the point where inflatable likenesses of Mr. R, after a certain time, had him smiling instead of with a mean face!
That was a neat anime looking Mr. R. In fact, seeing Mr. R with those Letter Girls in the Star Trip saga reminds me of certain anime shows like Tenchi Muyo and Angel Tales where a group of girls and only one guy have wild adventures together.
That reminds me of something I used to think about Mr. R (the TV version more than the one in the books and everything else)- somehow he always seemed like a player. I have no clue how I knew what a "player" was in kindergarten (it probably has to do with the fact that I have an older sister who liked to teach me things), but somehow Mr. R reminded me of one.

Mr. R's song was just too much for Kindergartens back in the early 80's. :(

@Lycanthrope777 Thank god I'm not the only one who detected a vague aura of eroticism around Mr. R. What the hell is wrong with me?

It seems to me like the character would be portrayed as an antagonistic character due to how the song goes. Miss O would seem to be another one.

where is his accent? Didn't he have a semi-british accent?

I must say, I preferred how he sounded on TV...

Someone once said that Johnny Depp should play Mr. R, but judging by the opening of his song, I'm inclined to go with Alan Rickman on this one.

Now that I see him again, TV version of Mr. R reminds me of Malcolm McDowell.

Yeah, that's true...the letter people shouldn't be changed (don't take Mr. D's donuts =o), but I still think Mr. R is creepy.

One other thing...check out a band on here called Golem (doing a great old Yiddish song called "Romania, Romania")...they should cover Mr. R's song!
