  • Great song. Great cover by a band that used to be great.

  • haha @1:07 reminds me Ian Curtis.

  • @pstrokeslibsarctic

HAHAHAHA Totally!!! I was thinking to myself *Where have I seen that little dance before?* Good eye!! :)

  • @sweetmozzer95 HAHA! IKR!

  • @pstrokeslibsarctic Not Ian Curtis, he is imitating Ian Brown's distinctive dance.

  • Nice.

  • do you have any videos of Company Calls?

  • Awesome cover! I can feel u guys rly enjoyed playing this song!

  • Sinead O Connor, nothing Compares 2 U. Better than Prince.

  • wow!!

  • good.

  • Awesome, but Year of the Rabbit did it better.

  • good

  • The drumming is terrible, that guys not fit to lick shit off Reni's shoes!!!!

  • He didn't sing the lyrics correctly.

  • do all american crowds ruin it by screaming like retards at the start ?

  • @Roche1983 Usually bands like it when fans show excitement about their music.

  • Why do we even have to debate cover songs vs originals? Has a cover ever been better, ever?? No need to compare, they are obviously fans of the original which is an all time great song, and they wanted to pay homage. Don't make more of it than that.

  • @jasonjmj you are exactly right, besides the fact that this performance is 10 years old. people need to relax, it's a tribute to the stone roses, not trying to show them up.

  • @brianjbean Has a cover even been better

    When the levee breaks ?

  • @brianjbean Has a cover even been better ?

    When the levee breaks ?

  • @brianjbean man, that 1:08 move is amazing....awesome cover

  • @jasonjmj Well I'd say that Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower was better than Bob Dylan's original, I'd say that Marvin Gaye's cover of Heard it Through the Grapevine was better than Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' original recording; and I'd say that Nina Simone's cover of Feeling Good is better than anybody else's.

  • @jasonjmj

I don't know. Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" cover might be better than the original.

  • @jasonjmj there are so many covers that have been better than the originals :p just not every one :P xx

  • @jasonjmj Umm Hendrix Watchtower was better than Dylans... lol Sometimes things are improved or developed far beyond the original, but this really hasnt expanded on the original so it was probably played cause these guys love the band and are not trying to do anything but have fun with a song they dig. Nothing wrong with that either.

  • @jasonjmj I would argue that there are a select few. Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of 'Just like Heaven' by the Cure is superior imo, and I may take quite a few people with me on that one.

Arguing purely which is better is stupid, it should be about talking about the songs individually. If all a person has to contribute is that they like another song better/that "this sucks" then really is it a worthwhile contribution?

Criticism is what makes our art worthwhile, would we be really engaging otherwise?

  • @jasonjmj I didn't have space in my other comment so I will say it here, good post about the purpose and nature of cover versions from the side of the artist covering.

  • Lol, we used to play this song in my high school years.

  • im not fond of death cab for cutie but this cover is beautiful

  • valeu.

  • the only descent thing that band has ever done

  • @TheNewWordMB Lol...and ya know I didn't even realize they were from the '85 era. This sounds like the Smiths as well.

  • If only the Roses were still around to play their songs.

  • A really amazing cover. Kept the groove of the original song.

  • they took the easy way out on the guitar parts

  • Sorry, but a song like this does NOT sound better with someone like Death Cab's vocal talent. Not hating on them but this song definitely requires some deep tones, not some dude who sounds like he's about to cry

  • i love death cab but this is clearly not on a par with the original. nowhere near in fact

  • Nothing could ever live up to the original, but as far as covers go, I love it.

  • She was.. very much so...And that All it really was..

  • it's awesome cover

  • A fun fact... I live in Rio and couple years ago I bought a cd of Death Cab (The Plan) by just one dollar (slightly). The street seller haven't knew about this band and the fair price for a cd by them.

    Anyway, don't sell your soul.:

    ;)

  • Man, this is a REALLY good cover!

Do we have a new monkey king in the making?? ;-)

  • This is actually so good it's forced me to actually LIKE a cover of one of my favourite band's songs...

  • i like ben's dance

  • at least they did it in their own style which is pretty sweet, good though.

obviously the stone roses > death cab though

  • OMG! they sound almost exactly!

  • sweet. death cab givin the stone roses some love.

  • not a bad cover tbh, but nothing will beat the original, stone roses!!!

  • Check my band covering i wanna be adored at practice!

  • Oh my GOD, YOU'RE NO IAN BROWN. Good choice of song though.

  • ben gibbard is ten times better than that washed up ack

  • yes! their first album is a true masterpeice

John Leckie is one of the best producers

  • Totally! I realized that two of my all time favorite albums were produced by Leckie. The other is Cake by The Trashcan Sinatras. Anyways, being an ignorant American, I didn't know much of Leckie till then.

  • no offence, but i take it all you people leaving comments r not british? this song was origonally recorded by the stone roses and was the opening track on their self titled debut album. i highly recommend getting a copy as its probably the best album of all time!! NOTHING BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL!!! good version though.

  • uhh... yeah... the stone roses... really obscure there. im sure no one has ever heard of them. next thing you'll be doing is tell people about the little gem called the smiths or joy division. open the flood gates!

  • Comment removed

  • yeah being american i can say that very few people know of them...well at least everyone ive talked to anyway. while your at it ill add the happy mondays, inspiral carpets, paris angels, the high, etc. the flood gates have opened!

  • @bryanlavery DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • @bryanlavery Roses are the best

  • Aces man, good job putting this up =)

  • i love these 80s british bands, you can even feel a little joy division in that bassline

  • You mean Republik of Mancunia, surely? ;)

  • where can i get the mp3?

  • I don't think it was ever recorded.

  • OMG are you CRAZY????? google it ..... "the best uk indie covers 2005" the name of the album

  • @PetarM4 i downloaded "the best uk indie covers 2005" and it actually contains what appears to be a different live recording of this, rather than a studio recording. i'd say that the live performance here (on this video) is a little better. more raw, more fun. i'd be really interested to hear a studio version, but now i wonder if it would actually be as good as the one here.

  • @Choscar666 .....just get a youtube mp3 ripper, paste this link and walla!!

  • @Choscar666

use audiohijack ( Mac), you 'll get it!!!

  • @Choscar666 listentoyoutube(dot)com

  • I've never seen live videos of them before, but Ben's reminding me of Ian Curtis a bit sometimes here. Love the end monologue lol.

  • yeah his body movements are very ian curtis

  • one of the best covers ive seen where a band has perfectly put their own touch on it

  • wow great cover

  • wow this is amazing. i can't stop watching it! thanks for uploading! anyone know where i can get the mp3? x

  • Great song, and a well done cover.

  • really really good stuff

  • great cover!

  • easily the best song ever

  • i had that ben gibbard/ian brown sway down about a year before i found this. it's beautiful.

  • link? i think ATQ is his best stuff

  • wow bens got some fancy moves on this one! only if they weren't so popular now...

at least gibbard is playing at the showbox by himself.

  • yeah, isn't it crazy??? a long time ago all time quarterback (his solo thing at the time) he played a show at the croc and i didn't know about it until the day after. i was so mad for not filming it.

  • yeah, now he jokes about how all-time quarterback was a nothing of a project. that would have been a good show
