Why do we even have to debate cover songs vs originals? Has a cover ever been better, ever?? No need to compare, they are obviously fans of the original which is an all time great song, and they wanted to pay homage. Don't make more of it than that.
@jasonjmj you are exactly right, besides the fact that this performance is 10 years old. people need to relax, it's a tribute to the stone roses, not trying to show them up.
@jasonjmj Well I'd say that Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower was better than Bob Dylan's original, I'd say that Marvin Gaye's cover of Heard it Through the Grapevine was better than Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' original recording; and I'd say that Nina Simone's cover of Feeling Good is better than anybody else's.
@jasonjmj Umm Hendrix Watchtower was better than Dylans... lol Sometimes things are improved or developed far beyond the original, but this really hasnt expanded on the original so it was probably played cause these guys love the band and are not trying to do anything but have fun with a song they dig. Nothing wrong with that either.
@jasonjmj I would argue that there are a select few. Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of 'Just like Heaven' by the Cure is superior imo, and I may take quite a few people with me on that one.
Arguing purely which is better is stupid, it should be about talking about the songs individually. If all a person has to contribute is that they like another song better/that "this sucks" then really is it a worthwhile contribution?
Criticism is what makes our art worthwhile, would we be really engaging otherwise?
@jasonjmj I didn't have space in my other comment so I will say it here, good post about the purpose and nature of cover versions from the side of the artist covering.
Sorry, but a song like this does NOT sound better with someone like Death Cab's vocal talent. Not hating on them but this song definitely requires some deep tones, not some dude who sounds like he's about to cry
A fun fact... I live in Rio and couple years ago I bought a cd of Death Cab (The Plan) by just one dollar (slightly). The street seller haven't knew about this band and the fair price for a cd by them.
Totally! I realized that two of my all time favorite albums were produced by Leckie. The other is Cake by The Trashcan Sinatras. Anyways, being an ignorant American, I didn't know much of Leckie till then.
no offence, but i take it all you people leaving comments r not british? this song was origonally recorded by the stone roses and was the opening track on their self titled debut album. i highly recommend getting a copy as its probably the best album of all time!! NOTHING BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL!!! good version though.
uhh... yeah... the stone roses... really obscure there. im sure no one has ever heard of them. next thing you'll be doing is tell people about the little gem called the smiths or joy division. open the flood gates!
yeah being american i can say that very few people know of them...well at least everyone ive talked to anyway. while your at it ill add the happy mondays, inspiral carpets, paris angels, the high, etc. the flood gates have opened!
@PetarM4 i downloaded "the best uk indie covers 2005" and it actually contains what appears to be a different live recording of this, rather than a studio recording. i'd say that the live performance here (on this video) is a little better. more raw, more fun. i'd be really interested to hear a studio version, but now i wonder if it would actually be as good as the one here.
yeah, isn't it crazy??? a long time ago all time quarterback (his solo thing at the time) he played a show at the croc and i didn't know about it until the day after. i was so mad for not filming it.
Great song. Great cover by a band that used to be great.
