Do you like to knit with natural fibres or do you use manmade fibres or does it not matter to you? I am a producer registered with the British Wool Board.
Having lived through the synthetic fibre era of the 1970's, I much prefer to knit using only natural fibres. Lately, I've become quite fond of a nice linen/wool blend that gives warmth without being too heavy or coarse.
new "man knitter" here. the last thing i figured i'd ever give a shot some how entered my life. i was travelling in northern ontario last january...was way north of timmins and found myself stuck in a small town for 4 days because of really crappy weather. not much there though a local bar and a few patrons including a hard core knitter. so with a beer in one hand and a couple chop sticks in the other i got told how to knit...
I'm a 49 year old male whose been knitting and crocheting for almost 38 years. These guys knit very slowly, but at least they are trying.
The pool cues would be about size 17 probably, but of course, much longer.
This is not the exact same leaf motif afghan as in the video, it's more elaborate, but the closest I've seen, at least for free patterns is called sculptured block afghan at the free vintage knitting website.
Loved it. On your video you show an afgan that is made in blues and creams, it has the raised four petal flower in the block. Please, please, PLEASE tell me the name of that afgan pattern. My mother used to make those when I was a kid and would love to find the pattern and make them Thanks!
As a guy who knits, and knits often in public, I am very happy that this film was made, and am always ecstatic to meet other knitters, especially male knitters. Being a male, and the fact that I'm only 21, people look at me with either bemusement or with the type of curiosity that one has when looking at a freak show. Just knowing that there are other male knitters out there is comforting, even though as long as I have my sticks and the occasional hook, I will be A okay!
I've been knitting since I was 18, although I'm 19 now, I'm still knitting to this day, in fact, I'm knitting a dress for at this very moment, it would be nice to meet other male knitters, but they can be hard to find because people think knitting is only for grannies or women, but it can be for any age and any gender. =)
Yes! You will be perfectly fine. I get stares when I knit in cafes, on the tube, or the bus. It's such a disposable sort of society that we live in now that people simply can't fathom fashioning something useful and beautiful such as a pair of mittens or socks. Be proud of yourself that you are carrying on a rich and time-honoured art that was in fact started by men. Keep with it and push yourself to more and more complex projects as your skill level increases, and happy knitting.
i am glad that you also knit although a man but why do you assume it must be men who invented knitting? nobody knows who invented that- meaning a certain person
Thank you for that moving tribute to knitters. Having knit for over 40 years, and working in knit shops, I have seen more and more men knit. Knitting for serenity and producing beautiful garments knows no gender. Way to go guys. Let's see more men knitting -- and passing ourself and our love on to the ones we make things for.
Thank you for your kind comments. As novice filmmakers (but woman knitters) we were moved by the experience of men involved, on a personal level, with textiles.

Hi,
I am sooo sorry for not checking in sooner!
That crocheted quilt was made by my Uncle Roland (to whom the film was dedicated)more than 25yrs ago, right before he passed away (prematurely :(
I am sorry that I do not know the name and that he is not alive to ask.
