My first big disagreement--now in terms of preferring the Classic Shredder, but my attitude toward the comics. I actually LIKE the morally gray nature of the comics; it's a refreshing change from what has become standard martial arts literature, with all its preachiness and black and white views of the world that don't hold true. Yes; the world needs heroes, but sometimes what makes them heroes is they're not perfect--and villains with sympathetic motives are better, too.

@Fawful5 So even though the 2003 show tries to work in his "Pet the Dog" moment with Karai, that just doesn't amount to much once you learn about his alien history of committing genocide on multiple worlds. As you said, he's a cliche villain; nothing more than loving to evil for its own sake, and there are many other villains in the show who are much more interesting. Compared to the comics, this show really wore him out, too, especially when they introduced his other incarnations.
On your tmnt 4-2 video when you talk about animation errors there was one i saw that you missed in the 2k3 series. lol I don't blame you for liking the 80' Shredder more, cause that's a matter of opinion. However, I personnally like the 2003 Shredder better. He was a bigger treath, had a more frightening look and was badass. I admit he has some cliche moments, but I don't consider being a parody a good way to make yourself original.
how can you even compare them?? this newer shit from 2003 is so flat stupid even without complete story-line I mean look how animation and drawing is lame... TMNT from 1987 classic FTW
@0rth0doX Lame?, if anything, the original turtles where lame.....lame as shit, and why do they even consider themselves to be ninjas when they move like they have a broom shoved up their asses. They fail as ninjas in every aspect possible, and the animation has to many mistakes to count. Nevertheless, the humor is funny though, but even then a lot of it comes from how bad and stupid it can get. The themes, the turtles and the villians are alot more developed in the 2003-version.

@0rth0doX Please just stop trolling. I won't argue with your liking of 80 Shredder, but 2003 Shredder is pretty cool in his own way. So please just tolerate some people like him.
@TitM91 It means if you get revenge, (in a case where either sides had something taken away or were permanently-inflicted-damge-upon'd, for lack of a better phrase) both parties end up at an unfixable disadvantage.
I prefer the 2003 Shredder, but it always annoyed me how many of them there were. Utrom Shredder, Ancestor Shredder, Demon Shredder, Cyber Shredder, and so on and so forth. On top of that, one way or another, they all say "I AM THE ONE TRUE SHREDDER!"
@jamocha101 Ancestor Shredder and Utrom Shredder are the same. Utroms just live a really long time. Demon Shredder.... well I like to think of that season as a short spin-off of the 2003 series. It just doesn't mesh very well with everything else in the series. But whatever... =P And I believe Cyber Shredder is just a computer version of Ch'rell, the Utrom Shredder (the same was there is a Cyber Hojo in Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus).
I agree with you that Splinter's desire for revenge in the comics is rather questioning. I always thought he taught the Turtles to be ninjas to protect themselves and others, so that they wouldn't be helpless in the face of danger. The comic Splinter's reasoning to teach the Turtles to avenge his late master Yoshi is rather troublesome to grasp, it's not what you'd expect from a wise old ninja master. Training the Turtles to be protectors of themselves and others make much more sense .
Okay No offence TMNT fans, I love the show as well. WTF does a father name his daughter Karai which means "Spicy"!? Its one thing to call your kids Sweethearts but Spicy!?
I agree with most of your points in the round of the Shredders. I actually like the first movie verson the best but when it comes to favorite cartoon version I'll go with the cartoon version. Now you many wonder how that works, when I sit down to watch an animated TMNT cartoon I expected and prefer to have fun and laugh with it. Overall I feel the new series takes itself too seriously whereas the movie had the right balance. I think the idea of the new shredder being an alien is stupid.
Ok, the 2k3 Shredder is SICK. I don't know if the comics intended him to be a torturing, people maiming psychopath, but seeing him how demonic he is makes me wanna actually hate him. I can't believe what he did to that Baxter character passed any censorship in the free world. I'm deducting 2003 points for the 2k2 series just for this character alone. If i had a 4-4 score by now, i have a 4 to -2001 points now for the classic TMNT.
If i have to choose my favorite shredder, I choose both of them... Why? Because I like the evilness of the 2k3 shredder and i love the 88s shredder cause he is just so funny and he can be so childish sometimes.... Shortly: I love 2k3 & 88 shredder!!!!!! <3333
I'm not trying to sound like i'm superior, but I know as much as you do about TMNT, DoctorDrink. I only have one question. I never understood why Ch'rell had those flesh spikes on his head. No other Utrom did. Now, I understand why he's red, because Utrom's are mainly pink but in Ch'rell's first appearance he fights a yello Utrom, meaning their colours vary. (The purple thing on his face is a tattoo I think) But WHAT are those flesh-spikes?
I know the 2003 Shredder isn't Krang, but Krang is an Utrom? The plot for Krang was he was a Krangzonian, a lizard-type alien. Not an Utrom. They messed the storyline up. Besides, Krang had a huge forehead with indents of his spine on his forehead, but an Utrom doesn't EXACTLY look like Krang.
Personally, I liked the classic Shredder/Oroku Saki way better than the newer incarnations. I think the newer incarnations, while true to the comics, was too dark and somewhat frightening.
The new Shredder is what the "classic" one should have been all along . unlike that loser . hes fearsome , has strong minions , and worthy of the title of a main villan .the utram twist was strange at first - but I hated that pink creep from the original too . plus , Karai is great , and in the ending of the series , he gets really awesome .
@videogamester07, not exatcly. Originally Shredder was a demon and Oroku Saki was a warrior who had fought against him, but in the time he became corrupted and let himself to "fuse" with demon Shredder.
"You speak my name, but you do not know me. I am Ch'rell, Oruku Saki, Duke Acquretz - the ONE TRUE SHREDDER. A destroyer of worlds... and I. FEAR. NO ONE!" ~ 2003' Shredder, most badass Shredder to ever live.
Shredder is the universe's biggest idiot he is far more stupid than Krang or anyone elese in that show and a mega push over. Utrom Shredder however is wanted on 7 worlds and a the universe's biggest threat 2003 WAS ROBBED ON THAT ROUND!
dude the 2003 TMNT had 3 Shredders : Utron Shredder ,Ancient Shredder and Cyber Shredder in the first episode of season 7 the turtles fight all the 3 Shredders
Yeah I grew up with the 80's turtles and still love them to this day, and do I hate the 2003 version, no but the reason Shredder was an alien was what stopped me all together. I give it credit for something original and different. I did watch the first few seasons and liked how this new shredder was more evil and cunning but to me Shredder was always a human. And who can not love Uncle Phil (James Avery) voicing him!
@jointron33 Now I didn't say I hated the new show. I said "Do I hate the 2003 version, NO but the reason shredder was an alien was what stopped me from going further with the series. I'm just too old school kind of guy.
@skanthavelu Yeah, I did watch more of the 2003 series sometime after. I noticed there were like other shredders. It just got too redicuous for me. Ancient Japan Shredder that the alien one based himself after, Cyber shredder. I know they were trying for something different and that's all cool. But it changes too much of the status quo for me to really enjoy. my feeling anyways. I did enjoy Turtles Forever. Up until Nickelodeon messed up the dvd release of it.
@congojoea I also watched the 2003 cartoon, but, it did not appeal to me. I found that it was just too dark and sometimes a little scary. While there were some funny points in that series, I personally preferred the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, esp the pre sean 8 episodes. Also, I am happy that the classic series went out on a happy note. :)
@DavidLeeT The DVD that's out now is only the tv version. There was another version with added scenes with some of the characters that showed up later in the show. Karai to name one. The art work for the dvd package doesn't evening have the old turtles on the cover. You can find official poster art that could have been a lot better or something about the same. Though I'm not as picky with that, if the movie was the longer version I don't care so much for the art and would have gotten the dvd
@DavidLeeT plus when the show was being aired, I recorded in to my dvr at the time. And then made a pretty good recordible dvd version for myself. figuring I could watch that until the official release came out, and hoping for the longer version that I watched online would be the one to come out. So if the dvd that's out now is just the tv version, the same one I have recorded to a dvd. There's no point for me to even bother getting it until they release the other version of the movie.
@DavidLeeT Well there are some extra scenes with 80's shredder and the newer one. I've heard, though I can't conferm that the ending with Peter Laird and eastman were taken out; if that's true or not. If you go to worlds finst report.com they have a review that states how the dvd version is a let down.
You know, everything about the new series actually appeared quite bad ass to me and I loved the 80s toon despite its numerous flaws. However as nazi-esque as I must sound, I cannot for the life of me accept the fact Shredder is an alien brain thing. Its just too retarded for words. I admired the Shredder for being a bad ass human fighting mutants, even if the 80s Shredder was a goof, an alien are you KIDDING ME?!?
Were it not for this baffling amount of stupidity, I would've loved the new show
This is following the accurate comic storyline. You cannot ignore the comic. If that's what Shredder is, they must follow it.
Still, once Shredder became Cyber Shredder, it's no longer that brain thing, it's really. This shredder is more deadly, since it is a "demon" that constantly returns.
Read the comic, and you may understand. Shredder is a brain thing until he becomes Cyber Shredder
@itsokayright How does it being "accurate" make it good? Authenticity does not always mean quality. Shredder was originally a human being even though he died in the first issue and the idea of him being a human opponent for mutant turtles to me, makes more sense effectively and for media wise for him to be a human.
Just because something's more faithful doesn't mean that makes the story automatically good. If something sucks in a story, faithful or not, its still going to suck.
i love the clips of shredder vs splinter at 1:55 to 2:12 and at 2:12 splinter looks gay no offence but huh ??? and your right in the comics why doesnt he take on splinter he defeats the turtles and more but no not the shredder he has to make the turtles his slaves and they do it for him wtf
I like how the shows have given shredder a bigger role. He was always the best villian to me. I have all the comics he's in but the rest I'm not really super fervent towards in my collecting. If I see one I'll buy it but the shredder comics are must haves.
What do you think it was like, having a hentai chibi villain for a dad? Let's hope he didn't read her stories...
"And then the wolf beast destroyed the pathetic shelter of his prey with but a breath... and he searched the rubble, eager to have the tasty, innocent flesh of the young swine children in his teeth. The pigs narrowly escaped their fate, their razor fanged fate..."
"Uh, yeah, I think I'll just go straight to bed, Father."
I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with the poster when it comes to Shredder and his direct henchmen; I think the new Shredder and Hun were way better than old Shredder, Beebop and Rocksteady specifically BECAUSE they were much more menacing and smarter. Old Shredder was too childish, Beebop and Rocksteady were idiots. Hun was intelligent and could hold his own against the turtles in a fight.
i nearly agree with everything you say here, that the classic shredder is more fun to watch. but i do think that the new shredder has some more interesting fight scene's.
i would say a draw, then again i don't make the vidz i just give my meaning of it.
i love youre classic vs new and i learnt alot more about the turtels
DoctorDrink one question I have since you seem to have a great knowledge of the history of the Turtles is how come the Shredder from the 80's cartoon looks so different from the toy that was made? I mean I know that toymakers usually don't follow the likeness of the shows counterparts because they have to design them before the show even airs in order to have them ready for sale during the shows initial run. Did the toymaker get a radically different design?
@7Rayo13: Actually, it wasn't just Shredder, many characters didn't look much like their toy designs for the most part. The ninja turtle toys had no eye pupils for example. That's just simply how they were designed for the show and how the action figure design was designed so it could be marketed to children.
@7Rayo13 Series creators Eastman and Laird chose from two mock up prototypes which design would be the look of the turtle toys. Out of those two one was cartoony and abstract and the other one was a over muscled MOTU model. They chose a Masters of the Universe looking model because it resembled the comic look they created so Playmates molded the figures with supple changes to match the style.
i agree with everything you say about the shredder! the 2003 shredder isn't bad, but the classic shredder is more charismatic (much thanks to james avery). i also share your opinion that Bishop is a much cooler character than '03 shredder!
keep it up with your comparison, i think you're doing a great job!
Toei Spider-Man (which most people refer to as "Japanese Spider-Man" or "tokusatsu Spider-Man") had to have his own vehicle, giant robot and a web-slinging device, because Bandai forced Toei Animation and Marvel to do so, so they can make toys based on it, similar to why the 1987 Shredder appears so often, making the plot of the 1987 TMNT loosely based on the original, but introduced viewers to the TMNT franchise.
You forgot that even the old series had karai, if you dont believe me, check out tmnt tournament fighters for snes, shes the end boss at lvl 3 difficulty and up
I thought there where 2 shreders? The real (that you can see as human) and the alien thing after he maybe died? Im confused, please shed some ligth on this! =D
@pearlfigther there are 3 (well 4 if you count Karai donning the armor of the Utrom Shredder) Shredders in the 03 cartoon.
Seasons 1, 2 and 3: Ch'rell/Oroku Saki/Utrom Shredder
Season 5 (Ninja Tribunal): Oroku Saki/Tengu Shredder. This Oroku Saki was a member of the Ninja Tribunal (all who had armor similar to that of Shredder) who defeated an ancient demon known as the Shredder. The demon possessed that Oroku Saki
Season 8 (Back to the Sewer): Cyber Shredder. A cyber clone of Utrom Shredder
@DoctorDrinkX10 Yes, but wasn't she in the old comics? Only I think she wasn't raised by Shredder, her daughter was killed by the Foot and she came to New York for revenge... at least I think I got that right.
Well, actually, in a way, Karai was portrayed in the classic show. Only under a different name of Lotus Blossom and a different role of a sort of neutral ninja female warrior who always left a lotus flower after she left a scene. The two had something in common, a certain respect for Leo.
Am I the only one who wonders why the Turtles weren't curious that the beheaded Shredder had no blood coming out of his body or head? Also, the Guardians were present, wouldn't they have told the Turtles "Hey, uh, he's really a brain monster in the torso... aim for the gut."
I hear the Triceraton Shredder that would appear in Fast Forward was going to be Ch'rell, taking on a new identity. I say "Why not do that from the beginning instead of ShOkanabo?"
Any ever wonder WHY they didn't use the utroms? Or at least stay a little more true to the comics in the old cartoon? They had a perfect enough origin in the comics, why completely make a new one for the cartoon? It's like giving Batman a different origin by having his parents mugged and not killed.
Another Piece of Evidence! The Utroms made the Ooze and In TMNT II Perry Makes The Ooze. Originally he was revealed to be an Utrom and U Can see a Brain all locked up in his lab when he's Disposing the Ooze Canisters

The reason the first issue of the comic is like that is because it was not supposed to be continued, but then it succeed so they did more comics :)

Its one thing to call your kids Sweethearts but Spicy!?
joarng 8 months ago
@joarng "spicy" as in hot tempered. There's more to names then what you assume.
hotwhire 3 months ago
@hotwhire in English language maybe. but In Japanese Karai is the word to describe spicy as in taste.
Calling someone Karai doesn't make it mean they are hot tempered.

@joarng if u take it literally then it wont make sense.

My favorite shredder is teh 2003 shredder because he is so evil. The 1980's shredder is cool too, but I lke 2003 shredder better.

Also just a random thought I always thought the new shredder looks more like Super Shredder from TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze.
woollybully100 10 months ago
I agree with most of your points in the round of the Shredders. I actually like the first movie verson the best but when it comes to favorite cartoon version I'll go with the cartoon version. Now you many wonder how that works, when I sit down to watch an animated TMNT cartoon I expected and prefer to have fun and laugh with it. Overall I feel the new series takes itself too seriously whereas the movie had the right balance. I think the idea of the new shredder being an alien is stupid.
woollybully100 10 months ago
Ok, the 2k3 Shredder is SICK. I don't know if the comics intended him to be a torturing, people maiming psychopath, but seeing him how demonic he is makes me wanna actually hate him. I can't believe what he did to that Baxter character passed any censorship in the free world. I'm deducting 2003 points for the 2k2 series just for this character alone. If i had a 4-4 score by now, i have a 4 to -2001 points now for the classic TMNT.
cnh2132 10 months ago

(The purple thing on his face is a tattoo I think) But WHAT are those flesh-spikes?
donaldlolwut 1 year ago
I know the 2003 Shredder isn't Krang, but Krang is an Utrom? The plot for Krang was he was a Krangzonian, a lizard-type alien. Not an Utrom. They messed the storyline up. Besides, Krang had a huge forehead with indents of his spine on his forehead, but an Utrom doesn't EXACTLY look like Krang.

I'm just too old school kind of guy.
congojoea 1 year ago
@congojoea I agree. I resonally preferred the old incarnation of Shredder in which he was always human.
skanthavelu 1 year ago
@skanthavelu Yeah, I did watch more of the 2003 series sometime after. I noticed there were like other shredders. It just got too redicuous for me. Ancient Japan Shredder that the alien one based himself after, Cyber shredder. I know they were trying for something different and that's all cool. But it changes too much of the status quo for me to really enjoy. my feeling anyways. I did enjoy Turtles Forever. Up until Nickelodeon messed up the dvd release of it.
congojoea 1 year ago
@congojoea I also watched the 2003 cartoon, but, it did not appeal to me. I found that it was just too dark and sometimes a little scary. While there were some funny points in that series, I personally preferred the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, esp the pre sean 8 episodes. Also, I am happy that the classic series went out on a happy note. :)
skanthavelu 1 year ago
@congojoea How did they mess up the dvd release? just curious.
DavidLeeT 11 months ago
@DavidLeeT The DVD that's out now is only the tv version. There was another version with added scenes with some of the characters that showed up later in the show. Karai to name one. The art work for the dvd package doesn't evening have the old turtles on the cover. You can find official poster art that could have been a lot better or something about the same. Though I'm not as picky with that, if the movie was the longer version I don't care so much for the art and would have gotten the dvd
congojoea 11 months ago
@DavidLeeT plus when the show was being aired, I recorded in to my dvr at the time. And then made a pretty good recordible dvd version for myself. figuring I could watch that until the official release came out, and hoping for the longer version that I watched online would be the one to come out. So if the dvd that's out now is just the tv version, the same one I have recorded to a dvd. There's no point for me to even bother getting it until they release the other version of the movie.
congojoea 11 months ago
@congojoea Whos some of the characters that appear besides karai?
DavidLeeT 11 months ago

Were it not for this baffling amount of stupidity, I would've loved the new show
BionicSlime 1 year ago
@BionicSlime
Shredder is a brain thing until he becomes Cyber Shredder
itsokayright 1 year ago
@itsokayright How does it being "accurate" make it good? Authenticity does not always mean quality. Shredder was originally a human being even though he died in the first issue and the idea of him being a human opponent for mutant turtles to me, makes more sense effectively and for media wise for him to be a human.
Just because something's more faithful doesn't mean that makes the story automatically good. If something sucks in a story, faithful or not, its still going to suck.

7Rayo13 1 year ago 2
@7Rayo13: Actually, it wasn't just Shredder, many characters didn't look much like their toy designs for the most part. The ninja turtle toys had no eye pupils for example. That's just simply how they were designed for the show and how the action figure design was designed so it could be marketed to children.
DoctorDrinkX10 1 year ago
@DoctorDrinkX10 u said that splinter never fought shredder but in the 1st movie he defeated the shredder

@7Rayo13 THE TOYS CAME FIRST, THE SHOW WAS MADE TO SELL THE TOYS, PLAYMATES GOT THE RIGHTS IN LIKE 85-86, LOVE THIS VID SERIES BTW
cytonius1 1 year ago
@7Rayo13 Series creators Eastman and Laird chose from two mock up prototypes which design would be the look of the turtle toys. Out of those two one was cartoony and abstract and the other one was a over muscled MOTU model. They chose a Masters of the Universe looking model because it resembled the comic look they created so Playmates molded the figures with supple changes to match the style.
trans8010 1 year ago
@7Rayo13
Usually when making a toy based on a TV show (or vise versa) toy makers tend to make changes to the figure in order to make production needs quicker.

Nicksolo85 1 year ago
So, there was a human shredder.
