Giving to the poor is not silly if giving will improve their situation. AGAIN, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.
There are legitimate reasons for people to need help. There are also people who stay pregnant and live off government subsidies and welfare and AFDC funds. BOTH white and black do it. Giving those people money just means we have plenty of people to sell McDonalds and work at 7-11 as a carreer.
Churches have overhead, but it is taken care of by the members.

Churches host soup kitchens, provide volunteer manpower, and resources. The "Overhead" you complain about is not part of charitable giving. In most cases members take care of the upkeep. Those churches you denigrate, were the first to provide help in times when government was unable to take care of the people. It was churches and schools that provided help to the people of New Orleans when their mayor failed them.
It is churches that took in thousands of Viet Refugees and helped them in 70's.
