Mars is actually a valid translation of Marth. Like many Fire Emblem characters, Marth is named after a mythological figure, in this case he was named after the roman god of war, Mars.

Try sounding a soft "s" and then sound a soft "th." Since they sound so similar, the Japanese sometimes say English words that end in the letters "th" with the japanese character ス, or "Su."

Although "Marth" is more likely an allusion to Mars, the Roman God of War, which is appropriate because Fire Emblem is, at its fundamental level, a war game.

You shouldn't forget its an anime from 1996. It was pretty common for anime (and games) to translate (or even change entire stuff/plot) to make a "western" version. Anime was still pretty exotic, till stuff like Sailor Moon, Dragonball (Final Fantasy VII in game section) made it acceptable for mainstream audience. Thats when it at least stopped making too drastic changes.

But you can still see this happen for example in Shadow Dragon on Sheeda -> Caeda, Shiida.
