its not so much to help your wrist, it puts the weight onto the strap which is on your wrist rather than having to support the weight with your hands' grip. this means that when using heavy weights (for example pull ups) you can train till the targeted muscle group is fatigued rather than until your grip cant cope with the weight anymore. i dont really think theyd work for curls :) hope that helped

you forgot that it takes the forearm out of the movement to better isolate your targeted muscle since you dont have to use a close handed grip
