I love both versions of the song, but I really think something get's lost in the translation to English. Watching the Japanese version with accurate subs is just mind blowing.
Ahh...Macross+...Simply one of the best animes of all time and certainly one of the best OAV's. And the music!! So beautiful. I love Yoko Kanno and I love Sharron Apple!
does anybody knows where to get the english version in good quality by the way? it doesn't seem to have been included in any of the oficial soundtracks, and all the downloads i find on the internet are horribly bad quality MP3's at 64 Kbit/s >:-(
i actually prefer this to its original japaneese version, which is EXTREMELY rare in manga, i remember i was watching the 3 episodes over and over again when i was a child, this song never gets old!
No, I'm right. Gabriella Robin helped out with the backing vocals in the "we can fly, we have wings" middle section. The lead vocals are done by Akino Arai. Just listen to the Japanese version of VOICES, and compare the vocals. Then search for "Cats on Mars" by Gabriella Robin and compare that voice. Trust me on this one.
You might be right, but then again, you might not. The English vocals don't exactly sound like other Gabriela Robin stuff, I'll give you that. But first of all, they ARE credited to her (note: the vocals. NOT just the lyrics). Secondly, I think the backing vocals in the middle section are sung by Akino Arai herself in the Japanese version (listen to them in the acoustic version, it's totally obvious there). Lastly, Akino Arai does sound at least as different as GR in her usual vocal work...
BTW, another song worth listening to in which Gabriela Robin sounds much more similar to this than in her usual cute, epic or atmospheric/experimental stuff is "Some other Time" from the GitS SAC O.S.T.
Oh well, I guess we we'll never know for sure until we do a spectral analysis or something. My opinion remains the same for now though.
It's not just believed anymore though... it's now also confirmed. She performed "Moon" from the Turn-A-Gundam OST live on stage as Gabriela Robin in a recent concert. Also, the song she wrote last Saturday for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami has her singing as herself... her voice is shaky there, but the similarity to GR's vocals is unmistakable.
When i first saw Robotech i thought it was simply a Translated version of S.D.F. Macross, i couldn't have been more wrong.
What it attually was was a Botched revirsioning attempt which largley Destroyed the original feel of the Series & even messed up "Shoji Kawamori's" (The creator of Macross) original Storyline.
S.D.F. Macross is one of the all time Greatest Anime Franchise's (launched only 3 years after M.S.Gundam
& very nearly as Popular as it's legendary 1979 rival).
@Lionwolf0777 My friend and I made a tape of video game music and also put some anime music on it too. I would listen to it while I lifted weights...a long time ago now, and this was one of the songs on it. I need to watch this again now that I'm older and have watched all of Robotech at least. I think it would hold so much more weight for me now.
Still just as beautiful as the first time I heard it after all of these years.
The English version was sung by a Japanese girl originally, and the American transcriber thought he heard things like "eager'"and "spleen". It's EAGLE and SPRING - per the author.
Yeah, which actually isn't all too surprising considering that the singer of the english version is the composer herself... (yes, that's the voice of Yoko Kanno)
It's sung off key and is full of asyllabic prose as a consequence of literal translation.
There are a few English covers of songs originally sung in Japanese that I do find on par if not better than the original, alas, they are few. This is not one of those few. Nocturne from Castlevania Symphony of the Night would be one of those few.
I like both versions - I think the melody is divine enough that you don't need to understand the lyrics to appreciate the song, but the English version has its own charm. I connect to it more on a linguistic sort of level.
It's not about purity it's about the actors, well atleast for me it is, Japan a country that has maybe 100 live actors and over 1,000 of Voice actors (Exaggeration) So the japanese give their best when they do the voice in anime,
while dubbing is most likely so crappy actor just getting his next pay check so that is why I and most people should prefer the original voices.
It's not about this purity Crap that is just retarded.
I tend to find that most important part of a performance (acting singing etc) isn't so much what exactly is being said but HOW it's being said. (donnie brasco's "forget about it" is perfect example) When people say something is lost in the translation usually it's that, or a culture reference.
You got the words right Oreosis; I just went thru the japanese version about 20 or 30 times, and you said everything right, more or less. Good job man and good ears. The Japanese version is easier to get the words from, the words are more distinct; good think I learned Japanese! I spent almost 8 years there! Gotta learn and love the language!

fuken hay this is the shit i love this song and im a rapper but still this song is wrothey to be called muecie its so real like tu pac thanxx macross 4 your song i love it thay should make a live movie like thre doing with akria
if you mean at 1:30 its the space fold drive that can be attached to the VF, at 2:30 they are in battle and its just battle damage ( leg armour) on the VF
its acually the missle pod because niether the yf-19 or yf-21 have hard points and if you don't believe me isamu lauches a barrage of missle from it at about 2:03
Well that jet is actually from the end of ep 4 when Isamu flies off into the sun and this song begins. You see there's no english release of this song except on the DVD's during the films end, so the guy recorded it off that but we still hear that damn jet engine! What someone might try doing is taking this song from ep 1 up until it cuts out, then splicing it together with the ep 4's version, if done right you could have a seamlessly blended song and the jet would be gone.
I'd like to see someone cut this song so the first part that's played in ep 1 and the final part played in the end are seamlessly blended together. As it stands we hear the jet engine of Isamu flying off as the music starts playing :P
the english theme is way better than the jap

Cast a spell, from the old magic book.
Scatter pearls, in the black magic box,
something strange will happen, it will take you so far.
So try...We can fly, we have wings, we can touch floating dreams.
Call me from so far through the wind in the light.
Someone came from the dark over from the stars.
Protecting my heart from crying.
Taken back by surprise my traveller returned.

The dubbed version of this song is very good, something you don't see nowadays. I was absolutely moved when I saw this for the first time.

Beautiful. A war song if i've ever heard one. Simply beautiful. Even more so since it's in English. More meaningful once you understand the song and what it's all about

What is that thing that detaches from the planes at 2:30? It's always baffled me.

think its part of the armor that can be detached
shawneal1 3 years ago
if you mean at 1:30 its the space fold drive that can be attached to the VF, at 2:30 they are in battle and its just battle damage ( leg armour) on the VF

FAST packs, they're extra armor fuel, and ammo, sometimes flares and chaff.

Well that jet is actually from the end of ep 4 when Isamu flies off into the sun and this song begins. You see there's no english release of this song except on the DVD's during the films end, so the guy recorded it off that but we still hear that damn jet engine! What someone might try doing is taking this song from ep 1 up until it cuts out, then splicing it together with the ep 4's version, if done right you could have a seamlessly blended song and the jet would be gone.

awesome!!! nice jet sound int he beginning.. love it!!! more! more! more!

I'd like to see someone cut this song so the first part that's played in ep 1 and the final part played in the end are seamlessly blended together. As it stands we hear the jet engine of Isamu flying off as the music starts playing :P

Love this song, even more than the original japanese version. One of the best english anime songs of all time. Macross Plus FTW!
