  • the english theme is way better than the jap

  • I love both versions of the song, but I really think something get's lost in the translation to English. Watching the Japanese version with accurate subs is just mind blowing.

  • I thought Michelle Flynn did this one.

  • unreal

  • This is very nice; thank you.

  • Ahh...Macross+...Simply one of the best animes of all time and certainly one of the best OAV's. And the music!! So beautiful. I love Yoko Kanno and I love Sharron Apple!

  • "feeling my spleen decline"? WTF?

  • this song brings back memory of my first love... ech ;(

  • Whoever clicks "dislike" on this is emotionally stunted. This song is incredible.

  • Just as good in English as the original.

  • I wish I could post a link to my review of this 4 episode opus.

  • This song should have won an Emmy.

  • does anybody knows where to get the english version in good quality by the way? it doesn't seem to have been included in any of the oficial soundtracks, and all the downloads i find on the internet are horribly bad quality MP3's at 64 Kbit/s >:-(

  • i actually prefer this to its original japaneese version, which is EXTREMELY rare in manga, i remember i was watching the 3 episodes over and over again when i was a child, this song never gets old!

  • One of the first animes I ever bought and it will always remain one of my favorites.

  • Cowboy Bebop and Marcross Plus..... greatest animes in creation #stamped

  • Every time I hear this song it breaks my heart all over again.

  • Part of this Song Reminds me of The First Robotech Season as of music in that or the Robotech Theme,

  • English one is rare. I'm sorry to see it's not HQ, but still happy I found it.

I remember watching this film when I was younger. This song was so moving...

  • eleven people are deaf.

  • I love this song! I cried like a little girl when I first saw this in the OVA. It makes more sense if you've actually watched the OVA.

  • No, I'm right. Gabriella Robin helped out with the backing vocals in the "we can fly, we have wings" middle section. The lead vocals are done by Akino Arai. Just listen to the Japanese version of VOICES, and compare the vocals. Then search for "Cats on Mars" by Gabriella Robin and compare that voice. Trust me on this one.

  • @quirkasaurus Gabriella Robin is a psuedonym that Yoko Kanno uses.....

  • @armynurseboy -- i know! i said as much 2 comments down! :-)

  • You might be right, but then again, you might not. The English vocals don't exactly sound like other Gabriela Robin stuff, I'll give you that. But first of all, they ARE credited to her (note: the vocals. NOT just the lyrics). Secondly, I think the backing vocals in the middle section are sung by Akino Arai herself in the Japanese version (listen to them in the acoustic version, it's totally obvious there). Lastly, Akino Arai does sound at least as different as GR in her usual vocal work...

  • @quirkasaurus

BTW, another song worth listening to in which Gabriela Robin sounds much more similar to this than in her usual cute, epic or atmospheric/experimental stuff is "Some other Time" from the GitS SAC O.S.T.

Oh well, I guess we we'll never know for sure until we do a spectral analysis or something. My opinion remains the same for now though.

  • otaku -- i'm fairly certain the English and japanese singer are the same woman: Akino Arai. "fairly certain" being 99.9999% certain.

  • @quirkasaurus

You're actually wrong. The english vocals are credited to Gabriela Robin, meaning that Yoko Kanno herself is the one singing.

  • @as12df12 Yup, "Gabriella Robins" is widely believed to be merely a pseudonym that Yoko Kanno uses when she records in English.

  • @armynurseboy:

It's not just believed anymore though... it's now also confirmed. She performed "Moon" from the Turn-A-Gundam OST live on stage as Gabriela Robin in a recent concert. Also, the song she wrote last Saturday for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami has her singing as herself... her voice is shaky there, but the similarity to GR's vocals is unmistakable.

  • This Macross song alone put every robocrap songs to shame. Take that harmonazy gold. :-)

  • @JamesBond77 Very true.

When i first saw Robotech i thought it was simply a Translated version of S.D.F. Macross, i couldn't have been more wrong.

What it attually was was a Botched revirsioning attempt which largley Destroyed the original feel of the Series & even messed up "Shoji Kawamori's" (The creator of Macross) original Storyline.

S.D.F. Macross is one of the all time Greatest Anime Franchise's (launched only 3 years after M.S.Gundam

& very nearly as Popular as it's legendary 1979 rival).

  • the jet swoosh is the best lol

  • excellent song and lyrics.

  • I still get chills from listening to this song. Great editing.

  • this song reminds me of Air, the anime

  • robotech is the american version of macross with MANY changes to the story and characters

  • Beautiful song! One of the best in the Macross / Robotech series...

  • This is a beautiful song. The girl in the video looks a little like lynn minmay.

  • Is there a full version of Voices when Guld died on here? That made me tear up.

  • I forgot how much I loved this song.

  • @Lionwolf0777 Its really beautiful...

  • @AgileFan0 You know this was one of the first songs that I liked in both the Japanese and American translations.

  • @Lionwolf0777 My friend and I made a tape of video game music and also put some anime music on it too. I would listen to it while I lifted weights...a long time ago now, and this was one of the songs on it. I need to watch this again now that I'm older and have watched all of Robotech at least. I think it would hold so much more weight for me now.

  • @AgileFan0 Macross Plus is not a part of roboturd.

  • @JamesBond77 I thought it was based off of it sometime in the future.

  • WOW.

  • fantastic, thanks.

  • I can't find the english version anywhere! Is there any mp3 downloadable version of this Song.

  • mimei?????

  • Who sings this in the English version?

  • UK singer Michelle Flynn

  • I love this song both in Japanese and English ( fist heard it in Japanese tho)

  • Still just as beautiful as the first time I heard it after all of these years.

The English version was sung by a Japanese girl originally, and the American transcriber thought he heard things like "eager'"and "spleen". It's EAGLE and SPRING - per the author.

  • Yoko Kano is great, but the English version is just amazing

  • love this song

  • Where can I download this song?

  • its nice but the japonese version is 1000 better!

  • @otakuuuuuuuuuuuu your mileage may vary. The english singer puts a lot more emotion and feeling into her lyrics than the japanese one imo.

  • @xzander

Yeah, which actually isn't all too surprising considering that the singer of the english version is the composer herself... (yes, that's the voice of Yoko Kanno)

  • Also, where to download this song?

    Where to get it????

  • with apologies to all the purists out there, i think the english version is better.

  • The English version is decidedly worse.

It's sung off key and is full of asyllabic prose as a consequence of literal translation.

There are a few English covers of songs originally sung in Japanese that I do find on par if not better than the original, alas, they are few. This is not one of those few. Nocturne from Castlevania Symphony of the Night would be one of those few.

  • I listened to the English version as a kid, I like it most above the japanese one.

The japanese version feel dull, emotionless.

  • @brycebrown1221 I agree, the english version rocks.

  • I like both versions - I think the melody is divine enough that you don't need to understand the lyrics to appreciate the song, but the English version has its own charm. I connect to it more on a linguistic sort of level.

  • @Lunarsight i agree 100%

  • It's not about purity it's about the actors, well atleast for me it is, Japan a country that has maybe 100 live actors and over 1,000 of Voice actors (Exaggeration) So the japanese give their best when they do the voice in anime,

while dubbing is most likely so crappy actor just getting his next pay check so that is why I and most people should prefer the original voices.

It's not about this purity Crap that is just retarded.

  • I tend to find that most important part of a performance (acting singing etc) isn't so much what exactly is being said but HOW it's being said. (donnie brasco's "forget about it" is perfect example) When people say something is lost in the translation usually it's that, or a culture reference.

  • feeling my spleen decline? whats that about. not dissing the song , just a lil confused. anyone?

  • @animeisland420

The spleen was once associated with anger. To "vent one's spleen" means to vent angry. So this means her anger is declining.

  • ooh it gives me chills

  • one of my favorite songs, in English or Japanese it doesn't matter.

  • You got the words right Oreosis; I just went thru the japanese version about 20 or 30 times, and you said everything right, more or less. Good job man and good ears. The Japanese version is easier to get the words from, the words are more distinct; good think I learned Japanese! I spent almost 8 years there! Gotta learn and love the language!

  • fuck i love the sound of the valkyries

  • perfect song,,

  • The first word in my dreams

    I could clearly see

Planet Eden high beyond the skies

    Beautiful and sad

    is this story I'll tell

    of the winged travellers eager

  • @oreosis I have this song tatooed on my side

  • @oreosis I have this song tatooed on my side

  • @willchaires wow really? thats so kool :D

  • 'twas one day

the wind guided him where to go

like an eagle high above he flew

    Waving from down below

    he flew out of sight

    into the mystical darkness

Neither a smile nor a cry

    I gave when he left

    feeling my spleen decline

  • @oreosis spleen?

  • @lainkioma yeah, its an organ in your body

  • And hoping

    one day we'd fly over

back to the places we once shared

    Where vessels glide

in silky waves and of gold

deep in the gulf such planet lies

    Surrounded by this universe

    of love and hate

    confusion breaks through and dwells.

  • Cast a spell, from the old magic book.

Scatter pearls, in the black magic box,

something strange will happen, it will take you so far.

So try...We can fly, we have wings, we can touch floating dreams.

Call me from so far through the wind in the light.

Someone came from the dark over from the stars.

    Protecting my heart from crying.

Taken back by surprise my traveller returned.

What went wrong? Why did he change?

  • Think it's what went "wry?" Probably spelt wrong but I don't hear her sing a g.

  • i mighta got it wrong but idk hard 2 tell

  • great vid, song is so amazing.

i have a dual audio version and i love comparing the two, the english isnt too bad on this series

  • Epic...

  • fuh sho

  • The first word in my dreams,

    i could clearly see,

Planet Eden high beyond the skies.

    i hope that helps!

  • Macross plus has been released in english as it was in french

  • Sry ppl i just had to update firefox now it works and i'm in a good mood again : )

  • i remember watching this movie when i was a kid ive spent the last 3 fuckin hours trying to find a copy of this in english not subbed i want to heare them speaking in english damit is that 2 god dam much to ask for so plz end my anger and help me out leave a link that meets the requirements plz

  • raynequinn1 i don't think you can get the movie in english, but you cant get the series in english and its almost exactly the same as the movie except better. The movies like a condensed version of the series. There is a dvd set that has both series and movie on it- its called Macross Plus the ultimate addition. I recently saw it for bout £2.99 or something stupid like that on amazon....

  • The movie has been put in English actually and I do believe that the series has been english dubbed as well

  • Yeah they dubbed it years ago

  • Don't know about dvd, but I have the series in english on vhs from... Too many years ago to remember. Damn I'm getting old.

  • The first time i watch this i was like 10 years old but i fell in love with it such a great anime and the music awesome

  • need to see macross zero =P

  • one of the rare cases that i actually like the English version better.

  • My favorite verse from the English lyrics of this song, Voices:

Neither a smile nor a cry

    I gave when he left

    feeling my spleen decline

  • haha I'm glad you looked trougth the version with voice :-) as you can see they are all beautiful :-)))

Macross Plus is just amazing :0) Thank you!

  • LOL Thank you for introducing me to this beautiful song! ; )

  • nice that this is up, points out the difficulties of good dubbing though. The singing is plainly still beautiful, but the words have to change because the lyrics would never be the same number of syllables in English, and after you change the words to fit the melody, it isn't the same song...and on top of that, it doesn't rhyme in English either after it has been dubbed ;)

Seldom is the sub vs dub issue so well illustrated.

At least the choral break is English in both versions.

  • Fab song, love it

  • I like the Japanese version better, but either version is really good!

  • Truly a melancholic feeling

  • reminds me of my child hood

  • Japanese version is better, but still a great song.

  • love the song. years after and i still listen to it

  • This song made Macross Plus legend!

  • so it's actually the music that makes Macross Plus such best-selling anime?

wow...never thought the power of music could be that strong..

  • most of Macross saga has amazing music.

  • I loved Macross, and this song made the OST amazing.

  • My brother used to rent videos of this when he was in Middle School, he was into this and Gundam Wing( I never liked Gundam myself to much Drama!)

  • i ust saw the 1st episode not bad

  • can anyone tell me where i can download this song?

  • This version is amazing but the japanese one blows it out of the water, bu this is still amazing and so moving. Very few songs make me feel so happy yet so sad. One of the best tracks ever created.

  • this is a hella good song bitches

  • love this song and have been seraching for it for a while now but i only knew it was from macross. couldn'r remember what the song was called so i listened to so many songs just searching for it. thanks for sharing

  • I've been searching everywhere for the version of Macross that this song came from. English dubbed with this opening song(in eng). Can anyone tell me exactly which version it is? or where to find it? I suspect it's the "International" version but haven't seen it anywhere.

  • i will remember this song to my last breath ...love sadnes hope pozdrawiam polskich fanow MP

  • This is so beautiful, it's unreal. Does anybody have suggestions that are similar?

  • another one is Sanctuary by utada hikaru

    but it's a little bit faster^^

  • I also really like Hiru no Tsuki from Outlaw star. Very similar ethereal quality.

  • From The Escaflowne Movie OST - Sora's Folktale - the music is by Yoko Kanno. She worked on the Macross Plus Sountrack

  • So beautiful that song, amazing!!

  • Thanks for your mail, I'm glad you liked it, by the way you should also listen "Escaflowne Original Sound Track - Sora" Here on youtube and search for the "Escaflowne Original Sound Track - Sora's Folkale" it has the better sound quality here on youtb.

  • The english one or just any version?

  • the english one plzzzz !! =)

  • Instant Classic!

  • This is a beautiful song, and one of the most beautiful openings to a film ever.

Maybe my opinion is influenced by my thrill of it when I was a kid, heh.

  • so happy you posted this. caught the very end of macross plus on hbo 'round 2000, heard the beginning of this song during the battle scene. stayed hooked til the end. didn't know the name of the movie, but been looking for the song ever since. this, wind by akeboshi, and shooting star at the end of FLCL are three of the best songs in anime.

  • 1st CD mate +D

  • simply the best sounds you can hear on this planet, amazing....

  • great!!! I love Macross Plus

    question

In witch cd of Macross Plus OST is this theme?

  • Every one of theme I'm pretty certain. The other versions are called Myung theme. They are vocal less and one is a cello version the other an orchestra version.

  • this song is so...so..beautiful!!!

  • I agree completely.

  • Every Macross Plus fan should hear "Aimo" sung by Ranka Lee(Ai Nakajima) in Macross Frontier. It has the similiar melody with "Voices"!

  • The dubbed version of this song is very good, something you don't see nowadays. I was absolutely moved when I saw this for the first time.

  • pliz,pliz,pliz !!! wer can i get this song ??!! Pliiiiiiiizzz ...thanks.

  • i can send u this song if u want... ive had it 4 a few years now

  • When I ever hear the start of this song it grabs my attention away from what ever I'm doing at the time.

  • i hear that...and yet at times..ill hear it during the dead of night in my sleep...it haunts me...

  • Beautiful. A war song if i've ever heard one. Simply beautiful. Even more so since it's in English. More meaningful once you understand the song and what it's all about

  • fuken hay this is the shit i love this song and im a rapper but still this song is wrothey to be called muecie its so real like tu pac thanxx macross 4 your song i love it thay should make a live movie like thre doing with akria

  • grate fuken song o.g 4 life

  • that shit that at 2:20 is the engin that gave it light speed it brakes away and so does alot of amoe thay waest to enter earths atmospher

  • What is that thing that detaches from the planes at 2:30? It's always baffled me.

  • think its part of the armor that can be detached

  • if you mean at 1:30 its the space fold drive that can be attached to the VF, at 2:30 they are in battle and its just battle damage ( leg armour) on the VF

  • FAST packs, they're extra armor fuel, and ammo, sometimes flares and chaff.

  • Thanks! How do you know all this!? hehe

  • I've been a Macross fanboy for a long time, and won't be turning my membership in an time soon :)

  • its acually the missle pod because niether the yf-19 or yf-21 have hard points and if you don't believe me isamu lauches a barrage of missle from it at about 2:03

  • Mmmmmmmmmmm! This music make my happy!Great music theme from japanese animation.Recomended movie:Macross Plus.

  • love this! I use to re-watch this show when it came on to listen to this song.

  • Well that jet is actually from the end of ep 4 when Isamu flies off into the sun and this song begins. You see there's no english release of this song except on the DVD's during the films end, so the guy recorded it off that but we still hear that damn jet engine! What someone might try doing is taking this song from ep 1 up until it cuts out, then splicing it together with the ep 4's version, if done right you could have a seamlessly blended song and the jet would be gone.

  • awesome!!! nice jet sound int he beginning.. love it!!! more! more! more!

  • I'd like to see someone cut this song so the first part that's played in ep 1 and the final part played in the end are seamlessly blended together. As it stands we hear the jet engine of Isamu flying off as the music starts playing :P

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • This is a beutyful song

  • MACROSS freakin inspire me in tournaments bjj just to kill the fear like the pilots in macross fying to their death

  • Always brought tears to my eyes...

    Absolutely beautiful.
