John Mayer covering one my favorite songs of all time!! Wonderful to know that there's still relevant artists out there with real inspiration. ALL HAIL STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN BABY!!! I'm gonna be 18 soon and here's to hoping more music like this comes around to my generation.
@NickBluesRock i aint saying he isnt a good player because he is. hes a hell of a player. but to me, it seems he's lacking that certain something that all the greats had
Double Trouble almost seems amazed by Mayers low volume.. Stevie used to blow up anybody's ears, probably including Shannon n' Laytons.. The volume also makes mayer sound a lot more mellow in my opinion.. But as bjhMus1C said.. He's a lot jazzier than Stevie.. although I miss some touch.. Great player and inspiration to me anyway! And btw.. I do like long comments, now and then.
I don't think he's that good at covering SRV. There are plenty other blues players who would be able to wipe the floor with him. But.....John Mayer started off in the pop scene so he can easily grab fame from doing decent SRV covers while the underground blues players who aren't famous will never be known. The good looks don't help either. Just sayin'
@goochiekoo86 Have you ever even seen John live? He's incredible. Clapton doesn't call him "Slowhand Junior" for nothing. And he's not "just" a good lookin' pop artist who can play the blues. He can and does do just about any kind of musical style out there. He experiments a lot. Before you go dissing one of the most talented musicians out there, you should know what you're talking about cuz you make yourself sound ignorant to John's millions of fans.
mayer does a better job covering stevie than anyone I know of. i'm not a big fan of mayer's voice when he's doing his own stuff, but I think it works well with stevie's material. and the guitar playing is pretty damn nice. he doesn't quite have stevie's raw power, but it's spot on otherwise.
@Camandaz Its wrong because you have this concept of SRV as aguitar hero or god of soem sort. Hes just a guy that was really talented with an instrument. He wasnt a greatsong writer, and he didnt really do anything groundbreaking. He just had taht SOUNNNND..... and guess what... So does John.

Sure, he still makes those stupid faces when he plays and sings. But at least they aren't as ridiculous as these.

It is of my personal opinion that more overdrive is needed.

Mayer does a fine job but he needs some flamboyant threads and a pimp hat with some feathers.

Only he can.

@Emil019b i bet if he played it in his bedroom, it wouldn't sounds this forced. im just trying to say that sometimes he's a messy player, imo.

@petec9686 they're totally different musicians. mayer is a lot more jazzy than stevie.. he kinda jazzed out this song and it worked out in his favor.
