This is not the question that General Petraeus is capable of answering, nor is it the question he should be answered. The military, from E-1, all the way up to people like General Petraeus, are simply given orders and told to complete them. They are never told to evaluate those orders or give their own personal judgements. General Petraeus isn't supposed to be a foreign policy expert.

All soldiers, as you say, should be able to evaluate a situation and have opinions on the orders they are given. If you just follow orders all the time some bad things can happen, so we need to have soldiers who can offer opinions on situations and orders when asked.
Politics aren't a strong point for soldiers, though, seeing how that is not their job.

John Warner should have known better than to ask a military general a stupid question like this. This is not the question that General Petraeus is capable of answering, nor is it the question he should be answered. The military, from E-1, all the way up to people like General Petraeus, are simply given orders and told to complete them. They are never told to evaluate those orders or give their own personal judgements. General Petraeus isn't supposed to be a foreign policy expert.

Maybe if Gen Petraeus was part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff I would agree with you, but he's not. General Petraeus' only job is to complete the objectives put in front of him. He's not a foreign policy expert. The only thing he may tell a President is whether something can be completed with military action. He isn't called to do more than that

Well said, sir. I'm going into the Army for my career, and I've got a lot of respect for the other branches, especially the Marines. All soldiers, as you say, should be able to evaluate a situation and have opinions on the orders they are given. If you just follow orders all the time some bad things can happen, so we need to have soldiers who can offer opinions on situations and orders when asked.
Politics aren't a strong point for soldiers, though, seeing how that is not their job.

I was not saying that every soldier should be able to do and say what he wants every chance he gets, but that any soldier has the capability required to give his opinion on something if asked. Most of the time the military doesn't ask anyone's opinion on something, so following orders is what most everyone is supposed to do. All soldiers *can* give opinions, but that doesn't mean they *should*.

While working to stop starvation and poverty and trying to bring all people closer together is a noble goal, it is something that other individuals and organizations are better qualified to do. Huh? Why should U.S. not be in Afghanistan, exactly? We are in Korea and Germany at their request (fact), and because of treaties. We are in Japan specifically because of the WW2 peace treaty. Guam is a U.S. territory. UK and Italy are military allies. You have your own view of right and wrong? Based on what, besides ignorance?

I love the name, too; somehow it's very fitting to a four-star Army general. I've read about him, though, and apparently plenty of people have had trouble pronouncing his name correctly, resulting in the nickname "Peaches". Don't know if people still call him that, but they did earlier in his life.

You don't get to four-star rank by having no view of the bigger picture and having the blinders on. And it's fine if you hate Petraeus; he probably doesn't even know you exist, but career Army soldiers don't have a lot of love for atheists and commies. Especially radical ones. And since he's one of the highest-ranking superior officers I have as an Army soldier, I don't like people insulting him, therefore I don't like you.

Um the military is full of people who follow orders. President says take the fucking hill and the general does just that. That how it works and rightly so they are all in fact yes men.
