Perhaps it's the idea that the "oppressed" feel the need to be noticed more and DEMAND respect, rather than EARN it! And I am not a WASP. Although I have a Protestant upbringing and my heritage is Scottish and Dutch, I do not have the inherited wealth that is the key factor here.
