As for the patting of the lips this is considered among our people as a holy call that should be done in our holy festivals and battles. This is displayed in a wall painting in Calcaxlta, Mexico dating back at least to 900 A.D. and shows one of our people (a Black Indian) making the call in a battle with his hand to his mouth. Yet you're correct, Hollywood writers made it very stereotypical when Confederate soldiers adopted it for themselves for their battles.

As Sidney Lanier, the poet and Confederate veteran, described it as "a single long cry as from the leader of a pack of hounds." Confederate soldiers may have either imitated or learned the yell from Native American groups, many of whom sided with the Confederacy. And the call itself was noticed in 1863 by a war correspondent for The Times that described the call.

So later in history, newsreels documenting the anniversary of battles in fought, documented several Confederate veterans performing the yell as a high-pitched "Wa-woo-woohoo, wa-woo woohoo." Nevertheless, long before the Hollywood studios were made records noted that we made our call and how others imitated it. One book entitled the North American Indian Book of 1907 Volume 2 pg 104, displayed a photo of a woman making the call with her hand.
