you can always check for any drift or deflection of lift by taking most of the weight then you let down on hoist line the ball or block will determine where center is 30 years mobile crane 339a mobile one hoisting engineer
That's true. Especially in relation to which end may hang low (bow/stern). And the unpredictable C-o-G, will indeed cause some drift. But... as we can see, the boat picked pretty level, and still it appeared to drift in a good 6 to 8 feet. So either the operator thought he had a capacity problem, and picked it "on the boom" (up),
-or, if that wasn't the case-
Then that's the last time I'd trust "that" particular rigger/signalman, hahaha.
thank god it was not mine !

this is not the fault of the operator, the flagman should have made sure he was centered up 3 ways

The operator could of gotten out of the rig to check it himself. Some things you just can't trust to leave in the hands of all the Bob's out there.

you have to trust your rigger. The c of g of the boat is also hard to determine

was it the wind?

No, the crane operator didn't center the frame over the center of the boat. As soon as it came up off of the jack stands it swung.
