If mines - like coal mines - are closed, it simply did not contribute to the economy. If you run a mine and there is not enough resources in the mine to cover expenses and to make profit - any fool will close it. So I find it funny that people blame Thatcher for that. And I also think that the UK is not better off since her retirement - she has been gone for longer than 2 decades people, really.

@leizuoer Thatcher's government had to fix the economic mess left by the previous Labour government. Unpopular decisions had to be made and history is repeating itself today. Socialism is great until they run out of other people's money.
Just think, if Labour had a credible budget plan back then, Thatcher wouldn't have had to make half the difficult decisions she did.
My point about no brains or ambition is about those who blindly follow Labour, thinking the world owes them a living.

@martinladley I think you're trapped in your own ideology. Thatcher and the Tories did a good job repairing our economy after the previous Labour government. It's a shame the Tories have to do it all over again. I was a Liberal back in those days and UKIP now, but Thatcher wasn't an embarrassment until the poll tax. Blair and Brown are by far the worst PM's we've ever had. Both are liars and utterly incompetent.

The reason the Tories were voted out was because of the poll tax. That led to Thatcher's downfall and Major wasn't a match for Blair. Just for the record, I'm no Tory supporter myself, but I'd rather them to the union-backed socialists in Labour.
