  • For the sake of those who would like to know as much as possible about the process, I figured I would share a Naval document used as a guideline for inspection of materials made not only with casting, but drop forging and just about any other method I could or could not think of off the top of my head.

In the following Iink, remove spaces, and replace "dot" with "."'s.

    ndt dot net/ndtaz/files/AFD-070730-011 dot pdf

If you would like more on NDT, please let me know, and I'd be happy to help.

  • @nazaxprime Alternately, you can simply search for "NA 01-1A-16" with google, that is the designation of the document given by the COMNAVAIRSYSCOM.

    ;D

Again, enjoy, and please feel free to share the info with anyone you like, it is free for public distribution and more or less covers all the course material (minus radiation health which is another document commonly called the "RAD-10") for a school that would have otherwise cost $100,000 to attend.

    Thank you again, mrpete222.

  • what material did you use for the core in the second shakeout ?

  • Thanks Tubalcain. All your videos are fantastic. I'm just getting into machining as a hobby and it's been very helpful watching someone do things the right way. Do you go to the Cabin Fever show in York, PA by chance?

  • Do you ever use lost foam casting?

  • @pietzeekoe

Never used the foam process--would like to try it.

  • Fantasic informative videos mate. I am studying casting/forming in Australia and your videos are by far the best I can find on the net. Well done!

  • Thank you Tubelcain! I learned a lot here.

  • Thankyou I watched all your videos and learned a lot thanx for sharing them!!! :-)

  • I just discovered your videos yesterday. They are fascinating and very informative. I've always wondered exactly how sand casting was done, now thanks to you, I know. I'm looking forward to trying it myself as soon as I can get the equipment together.

Thank you for your videos and please, don't ever take them off the internet! I'm sure I'll be referring to them for years to come.

  • Thank you for these movies for im from down under Australia and found them very interesting and i like how you put your movies together alot mate so please keep up the good work and us younger men need blokes like you to show how things were done back in your time :)

  • great vid mate. very informative!

  • Thank you for sharing these videos with us, I have a home made furnace, and have made the flasks and crucible, I am almost ready to start, your instructional videos have been a great help, you can read as many books on the subject as you like but i still think seeing it been done is far better.

Many Thanks, and PLEASE keep them coming ;)

  • Thanks for your support & interest.

  • I used to work in a cast and ductile iron foundry as a machinist. when they needed help on the pouring deck i would work there too.

it was hot and dirty work but very fun and for tough men, no wimps need try to do the job.

I also spend a year in the pattern shop and it was way fun.

  • Very interesting videos on casting!! I really enjoyed them and learned a lot. I would love to try it but there is so much involved.... making a small part would be easier for me to machine it rather than cast it. Question, what is a "Weldment"? Is it a machined/welded copy of an elaborate casting???? thanks for any info.

  • Thanks. weldment

an assembly of parts welded together

  • Thanks again Tubalcain. I have been meaning to do some casting for years. This gives me confidence to proceed.

  • thanks for the videos

  • By far the best informational video on youtube for DIY foundry work. Great work! Thanks for sharing your skill.

What kind of material do you use for the core for the moulds?

Thank you and please keep them coming.

  • Thanks for your support. For cores, I use silica sand plus sodium silicate as a binder--then baked in oven. Refer to my video on coremaking.

  • i really apreciate this 5 videos, very cool, very instructive, i hope you can make more vids... thanks keep the good work

  • I greatly appreciate your interest.

  • Brilliant! That was like opening a really good present. I loved that.

You have inspired me to get started on a Stirling engine project I have been procrastinating about. It won't be made with cast metal parts but there is some casting type work involved.

    Great series, thank you,

    Brendan

  • Thanks for the encouragement !!

  • Thanks. Will film one on how to make a mold using a pattern with an irregular parting line.

  • Another good video. I wonder what will come next? I am sure it will be interesting as usual..

  • First comment lol....Couldnt wait to see this one !
