This song drew me in right away. Today, the whole class was chatting away, as usual and then as soon as these opening credits started, it went silent.
@drno62 you should check out who made the psycho intro (saul bass) and also how this was different from other opening scenes. it was actually pretty revolutionary.
Every version of the Psycho prelude can't match Herrmann's. His take just has this immediacy, abruptness and sharp feeling that no version has been able to touch.
At those opening chords or whatever they are, I feel like this movie's grabbed me by the collar and it's not going to let go until it's good and ready.
@HayduMan1 I love Psycho and hitchcock, i try and include a little bit of hitchcock in the films i make, but the greatest opening credits ever is for catch me if you can
Nothing beats that - its a shame it didn't continue for about 20 more seconds. its how the title design and the camera shot moving to the blinds blend so beautifully.
Upload the whole thing. The top comment says you should support it and buy it, but all those people you'd wanna support are probably dead now. This is a '60 film.
If nobody told you, and you were watching this film for the first time, up until you first saw Norman Bates, who did you think wasgoing to be the psycho of the title? Marion Crane? Or perhaps her boyfriend or even her boss? That's one of the reasons this film's so good, because there's even a good story before we meet Norman and "mother".
Stunning credits- from the "Paramount Release" TV screen logo (since Hitch was doing his television show at the time and had that crew produce this film) to the apprehensive horizontal titles darting back and forth. I saw this in a classic movie house years ago, and when the names of "Saul Bass," "Bernard Herrmann," and, of course, the director appeared on screen, the place went wild. with applause. Cheers.
@kingjohntheman you have made it clear your quite narrow minded considering you make insults at someone who is obeying the law. Anyone who knows anything about this film is that Paramount doesn't earn any money from its release as its own by Universal Studios. Get your facts right and maybe start reading on the laws of copyright before you make assertions.
Don't upload it. It's not that hard to find and it's good enough that you should fork over the fifteen bucks and buy it. My library has like four copies.

@TaEmLa You're a liar, frankly. There's no way you've been to more than one place looking for this movie and not found it. That's ridiculous, and nobody's buying the story. Failing all else, it's on Netflix and Amazon. Just learn to live with the fact that you don't have the right to own things for free.

how would you feel if someone took your movie and had it avaible to download with you getting and respect or compinsations. even if the film is a masterpecie, you yourself will not be credited
There I said it and I think after 30 years no later the copyright should be lifted in lest its been renewed sence 30 years is a long time half of the people who made the movie would most likely be dead by then or close to it. There I stated my point.
@cartoonfan29 i disagree to both your points. With the first statement, films that are remade, if there for profit of anykind, they must pay certian fees for it to be done, fan films or parodies can get away but they cannot have certian items that tie it to the original source. to your second point, the copyright stands at 50years for a reason, and if the owners choose to renew the contract, its another 50years added. so frankly films that you may want up on youtube cannot be allowed
Fuck you youtube sence when is it a bad thing to post a movie so people can see it but every time someone post a movie it gets deleted due to copyright issue. I dont belive in copyrights for one reson they dont protect the movies at all I mean look at all these movies that have copyrights but still get remade and showed in other movies with out asking. But there is nothing wrong with showing a movie only time they can take the movie off youtube is if you take creddit for making the movie.
@cartoonfan29 copyright exsist for a reason, frankly what is so wrong with just buying or renting the dvd or bluray. it cost next to nothing, the quailty is milestones better than the youtube or any downloading site compression rates.
The greatest opening in horror movie history. It lends the idea of the fractured and distorted personalities that will be portrayed throughout the film. Amazing. Herrmann was a genius.

Gah I just LOVE this song. I just finished Psycho in my tv/film lit class and it was sooo good. My jaw dropped at the last like 6 min of the movie haha. We're going 2 start prt 2 on Monday :)
Hitchcock at his pinnacle. All filmed by a TV crew on a cheap budget. The sickest musical score ever in a horror movie. My older brother would go out of his way to make sure this movie was on when they would show it on late night commercial television just to scare the crap out of me. Fifty years later, still retains its impact.
gvalley07 said "Fifty years later, still retains its impact."
Yes. Recently, I watched it again for the first time in a few years and was shocked at how it affected me. The tension was almost unbearable. It was even better than I remembered. Hitchcock and Herrmann--an unbeatable combination.
Amazing. Downtown Phoenix in 1960. Scary to think that lived right on the corner of Fillmore and 1st Street. And then moved to Geary and Powell in San Francisco where the opening of The Birds takes place. Is there a connection here?
my grandmother said when she was a teenager and went to see this for the first time in the movie theaters people actually ran out of the theater from this music it was to much for them from the start lol!!!! AMAZING...of course its hitchcock =)
@Ihope: Very good choice. Best part of the entire film, because it speaks volumes in more ways than one. Here's a hint: Look at the placement of the birds in each shot.
It would be awesome if you could upload this movie, or at least just the parlor scene when Norman gives Marion dinner right before he murders her. I am writing a paper on it
the great, subtle way that the credits portray the split personality of bates is the thing that makes this movie even better than it already is. the credits are literally splitting just like norman's personality-and the movie is too, in a sense, since the first half about marian is barely important and the second is about norman . wow, this is just plain great.
I wish this recording were available commercially. The recordings that are available on the various vinyl/CD releases of the Psycho soundtrack are positively wimpy by comparison, played much more gently and at at a slower tempo, lacking the same aggression. This version is like being stabbed in the shower. I wonder what Herrmann told the string section to get that sound out of them. It sounds as if the bows are going to saw right through their instruments.
I agree with you about the various re-recordings... the one by Herrmann in the 70s is definitely slower (which is odd because he was the composer, you'd think he would get it right...) and the one by Joel McNeely is the correct tempo but it lacks the ferocity of the original recording. I have often wondered why there was no official soundtrack release of Psycho.
0h this is a CLASSIC! and i'm making like a toy movie of this it's gonna be a full movie swear 2 god in blk & wht and whoever gonna see will be sastisyed(is tht how u spell it)
Yes! It happens 3 other times as well. Also I think It's masterful how perfectly sinister the celli sound at 1:21 leading into that...and the violas at 1:18... I could just go on and on
Best film opening ever. The way those white lines fade out at the end to show Phoenix is creepy along with that high-pitched violin sound right before it ends. Excellent way to open a movie.
@SonnyJamesJefferson I actually like this theme better than the shower scene music, if only because the shower theme is so overused. They're still both great pieces of music, though.

This is a film about a psychotic individual, the titles are a bunch of lines moving up and down. No relation what so ever. How is it so brilliant?
drno62 1 month ago
@drno62 That's your interpretation.. I suppose for you it'd be the fact that (to you) lines have nothing to do with a pyschotic individual.
For me, it's a great title sequence, and I can't put my finger on it. It's just like the Dr. No title sequence with dots.

The off-beat pizzicato following the dotted rhythm is my favorite touch.

Do you mean at 1:26? I love that too!

Yes! It happens 3 other times as well. Also I think It's masterful how perfectly sinister the celli sound at 1:21 leading into that...and the violas at 1:18... I could just go on and on

Ms.Leigh looked sexy in those bras and halfslips.
