  • Sonny Banks Dislike this

  • @96grungeALEXANDER i doubt it. unless his soul is wandering around, coz hes dead.

  • I am shocked Ali called himself the greatest wayyyy back long before he was even close to that tag

  • Ali never worried about guys who hit hard.I wonder what became of Sonny Banks..

  • Great post--but it really should be "Cassius Clay vs. Sonny Banks." Clay didn't become Ali until 1964.

  • @Lava1964 It's easier to find. New fans may not recognise him as Cassius Clay, and will miss out on amazing history.

  • lol, the announcer called clay/ali "loquacious". a very good description.

ali, still as clay, was in his 11th fight in his first 16 months as a pro, and still only ranked ninth.

sonny banks would tragically die at age 25, 3 days after a fight with leotis martin on may 10 1965. he never recovered from head injuries sustained in the fight.

  • This Banks was one heavy puncher

  • Banks looked like some puncher, although the KD punch didnt look very hard

  • @loyaldude10 Even a jab hurts if you don't see it coming.

  • Thought Frazier & Cooper were the only people to floor Ali!!

  • @flaxonx3 No Chuck Wepner and Banks did it aswell

  • Amazing footage, I've never seen this before.

  • at the age of 20 i would say ali would have beaten a prime, tyson, holmes, frazier, norton, foreman and he still 5, 6, 7, 8, years before the best of his best years!

  • @jeryd2003 a little while before Johansen fought Patterson, Ali sparred with him and Johansen couldn't even hit Ali

  • It's amazing to see Ali looking so thin. 194, a genuine cruiserweight by today's standards.

  • @dabrixtonbomba

says that joe frazier was a bum???? wait

stick to the wwe boxing is not 4 u

  • look how quick ali getts up after\\\

a hook even if he was down 10 times he would still get up

and come back wat could tyson ever do to a chin like that??

ali had the quickest recovery in the heavyweight division ever

  • Good stoppage: I would've probably stopped it in the 3rd, or in between rounds 3 and 4 at the latest.

  • July 17, 1962; the day that I made my entrance into the world.

  • Saoony Banks died in 1965 from a KO

    RIP

  • @bojacub wow

  • @bojacub -that certainly was a shame. It was after fight w/ Leotis Martin.

  • Muhammad Ali is my all time favorite but this is ridiculous. I could see the ref stopping in the previous round because if you look closely Banks' legs are shot. But he clearly had his feet back under him in this round and seemed alert. It was a good punch that rocked him, but it wasn't worth stopping the fight.

  • thank you very much for uploading!

  • This was the worst stoppage I have ever seen in a prize fight. I don't understand it at all. I've never seen anything like it. Not that I think Banks would win, but he clearly could hurt Clay, so he deserved a chance to continue. I've just never seen anything like this. It's bizarre.

  • @TA152H01 Given that Sonny Banks died from prize fighting I think that's an interesting point of view.

  • @capablemachine Well, he didn't die from blows he accepted this fight, and the ref probably wasn't a psychic. Boxing has a protocol for when fights are stopped, and when they are not. This doesn't approach the norm. There are thousands of fights where a guy takes more punishment, a lot more, and is allowed to continue. Boxing as a sport wouldn't exist if fights were stopped like this. Maybe that's a good thing, in your eyes, so guys can't die from it. It's a dangerous sport.

  • @TA152H01 He consulted with the gin physician between rounds and stopped it on whatever condition the doctor told him to. The protocol was followed.

  • @capablemachine You either stop the fight in the previous round, or you don't. The protocol I'm referring to is what constitutes enough damage to stop a fight. I wouldn't have thought a stoppage was appropriate the previous round, especially with Banks throwing back, but it wouldn't be the first time I saw it. When it occurred, with the fighter still fine, defies normal boxing stoppages. It's bizarre.

  • @TA152H01

This is a tough call because Sonny Banks would die 3 years later after getting stopped by the great Leotis Martin. The real farces began with the Logan stoppage (no longer on YouTube) and the Daniels stoppage---luckily still seen here. And they just kept on keeping on after that---16 or 17 oddball situations, all in Ali favor.

  • @sugarlanskee8 so Ali won by fixes?

  • @Ericbranson3

Take a look at the Daniels fight, get the book called: "Only The Ring Was Square" Teddy Brenner/Barney Nagler for pps 84-85 (eyewitness account of Cooper I) and then begin your own investigation. The book is real cheap at Alibris. Esp. look at the early rounds of Bonavena and the Shavers bout.

  • @sugarlanskee8 tell me more about the shavers and bonavena bouts ,i have always said alis fights were won more based on his popularity than his fighting abillity ,he was important for boxing and a spokesman for the black community ,but liston ,cooper, norton at least 2,spinks ,lyle, holding fraziers head 150 times in fight 2 ,just doesnt add up to the greatest in my view

  • @chromeheart65

Ali was, uh, rough-housing and wrestling in the early rounds against Bonavena, at one point throwing him to the canvass, going so far as to shock Howard Cosell--Ali's biggest supporter. Ali should have been dq'd at that point. With Shavers, most observers had Earnie winning the fight circa 10 rounds to five, 9-6, 11-4. Of all the bad decisions in Ali favor, this was the most egregious. Ali never seemed to notice how 'protected' he was. Funny yet melancholic.

  • @sugarlanskee8 many thanks im old enough to have seen the shavers fight and was convinced he beat ali ,seen it since and im even more convinced ,but the bonavena fight i didnt know about ,i always preffered the smaller guys to heavys ,so cant bring myself to sit through alis fights ,thankyou for your information i will view it on you tube now

  • Banks has a really nice left hook but Ali's jsut to fast

  • Wow Ali always rolls with the punches, but Sonny landed some HARD hits in the first two rounds that were clean.. you could hear them lol.

  • yes he would have been primitive with his boxing skill..which is far more commonly used than shere '' raw fighting skill which dempsey and louis possessed

  • Ali could not defend himself against a left hook.

  • you're right somehow. sonny banks, henry cooper, joe frazier... all of his knockdowns were caused by left hooks.

  • RIP Sonny Banks

  • ali good for his time..however now very primitive..and by far not the greatest..perhaps one of them? been too many good big punching heavyweight since him..to simply determin him as the ''soul'' greatest heavyweight..prime Tyson, Holyfield, dempsey, louis, lewis would have been more than handfull for him

  • @dabrixtonbomba Ali would have been primitive now, but Louis and Dempsey wouldn't?

  • What the hell planet are you from? Ali's skills "primitive"? Now? He was too good, too sharp for the heavyweights of the early sixties, and he would have been worlds ahead of the guys out there today, or of prime Holyfield/ Tyson's time. What big punching heavyweights do you mean? Any of them hit harder than Liston? Frazier? Foreman? Lyle? Williams? Shavers? It was the Golden Era for a very good reason. These men could actually fight.

  • Right...given a tough fight by Chuk Wepner and decked by Henry Cooper, lost five times...where is your logic?

  • Yes Ali lost five times, three of them as an old man. Yes he was decked by Wepner, an off night. The fact was he was still good enough to beat these guys 7-10 years after his prime. In his prime he was untouchable. Those fighters of the 70s leant from him and became faster, and he naturally slowed down. How many times did Tyson lose (and against what quality)? How many times was Louis down? Lewis was out cold twice from single punches. What the hell is "raw fighting skill", anyway?

  • 'an off night' lol how convenient. Ali was shit, face it.

  • @dabrixtonbomba You're an idiot. Matter of fact the gay ass knockdown Wepner got should never been a knockdown at all. He stepped on Ali's foot as Ali was stepping back and Ali tripped as Wepner "slapped" him to the body. Hardly a legitimate knockdown. Ali beat the ever lasting shit out of Wepner. Ali NEVER lost a fight in his prime, fighting the best heavyweights around. Past his prime he still licked them all. Frazier, Foreman, Lyle, Shavers, Quarry, and on and on.

  • Zzzzz...yea sure he tripped him up, as did Cooper and all the others! And he never lost 5 fights, it was all everyones imagination. Oh and Wepner didn't do ANYTHING positive against Ali either, Ali just went the full 12 cos he wanted to. Ali is Superman eh? That's why he's a cabbage now LOL

  • @dabrixtonbomba Actually no dumb ass, it didn't go 12. Shows how much you know about boxing. It went 14, and Ali knocked his ass out. All you gotta do is watch it sometime you fucking moron. Though Wepner hung in there it wasn't much of a contest. Fact is the man never lost a fight in his prime, lost 3 when he was WAY washed up. Only 2 losses while he was still highly competitive. You've got something against the man, that's fine. But don't act like he wasn't the best. U know he was.

  • 14 is even worse! I have watched it but it was so fucking boring I forgot how many rounds, forgive me. There was very little in it, Wepner could've swung it any time. THE GREAT CHUCK WEPNER. Hahahahahaha...

  • He lost nearly all those fights in his prime. Did you see the Frazier fight? LOL Frazier the bum hammered him in his prime.

  • @dabrixtonbomba You truly are a fucking moron. Nothing Ali did in the '70s was his prime. He was exiled from boxing for nearly 4 years, DURING his prime. The Frazier fight was taken way too soon into his comeback and he still managed to put Frazier in the hospital for a fucking month, albeit in a losing effort. In their rematch after he had shaken off some of the rust he dominated Frazier from the opening bell. Then again why am I arguin with an idiot? peace out fool.

  • Going to hospital after a fight is not regarded as part of the fight, so why even mention it? lol Loads of fighters go to hospital after gruelling fights, nothing special about that. Ali fought cunts, and struggled every time, simple.

  • @dabrixtonbomba Yeah, you truly are an idiot. Go fucking kill yourself. I suppose Foreman, Frazier, Quarry, Cooper, Liston, Shavers, Norton, Terell, Patterson, were all cunts. The man fought the toughest competition of any heavyweight champion in history. That's why it's called the golden age of heavyweight you moron. Go fucking kill yourself. You don't even deserve to have a conversation with someone as smart as I. Go suck your mother's dick. You're just arguing to be arguing.

  • His opponents were only tough cos he made such a meal of fighting them cos he had no power! Even Lennox Lewis would've beaten those guys in a couple of rounds. It's called the golden age for the same reason the beatles were in the golden age of music - they were new and exciting. By todays standards they were shite, Ali was so beatable. Stop resorting to petty insults, that is the mark of a frustrated loser. lol

  • @dabrixtonbomba lolololololol. No, you're just an idiot. By today's standards? lololol.... There's not an expert on the sport in the world that would give ANY of today's top 10 even half a chance in the '70s crop of heavyweights. You're just being dumb now. And you're doing it on purpose. There's no way in hell you believe this shit.

  • Wow so Vitali Klitschko would have had no chance against Floyd Patterson? Hahahaha...He'd have decapitated him. Why do you listen to these so called experts who are never fucking right about anything anyway? Do you not have an opinion of your own? Poor thing. LOL

  • Oh no! I DARED say that ANYONE would have a chance against ANYONE from the 70s. LOL What the fuck? Why is the 70s so special? You dumb cunt!

  • Also, there are many experts who reckon guys from today would've beaten guys from the 70s. You just make it up as you go along!

  • @dabrixtonbomba lololololol. Name one. Name ONE single expert on the sport of boxing that would say that. You need to stop while you're ahead. Oh wait, you're not ahead. It has been said that today's fat ass crop of heavyweights are even worse than the early, mid '80s heavyweights. At least in the 80s there were a few respectable heavyweights out there. You truly are an idiot. So I listed Patterson in there and you think I have no opinion of my own. You're completely alone in your opinion idiot.

  • Show me one who categorically states that no one from the top ten now would beat anyone from the top then. GO! MR BRAINLESS SHEEP! BAAAA LOL

  • Stop making such general sweeping statements. How do you know I'm alone in my opinion? Have you interviewed the entire planet on the subject? Jeez you're fucking stupid! LOL

  • So the Klitschko brothers are fat now? Since when? Last time I saw them they were a picture of fitness! LOL You are wrong with every single sweeping statement you make. Pathetic.

  • @dabrixtonbomba We're talking majority here numb nuts. And you wanna talk about the Klitschkos? They're the worst thing about today's heavyweights. They both refuse to fight each other, so we'll never have a true champ as long as those pus nuts still hold belts. It would be nice if one would retire and at least somebody unify the title. You know, one champ, like we had when Ali was boxing.lolo You know, Ali, the Greatest!!! The K brothers suck and you know it. A prime Tyson would make them cry

  • Ok, show me some evidence of this majority of people who stated that anyone from the 70s would beat anyone from today. LOL Who cares that they wont fight each other, theyre brothers and thats their prerogative. If they werent there the title would be more fragmented than it is now, at least the brothers dominate together. Ali is not the greatest, he was just another fighter who had a big mouth and brought excitement to boxing with his mouth.

  • In terms of skill he was average, idiots like you believe the hype, and the only experts who think he was the greatest are pussies who are too scared to upset the applecart. I form my opinions on what I see, not on hype and media opinion. You prefer to follow the herd, thats why we're having this argument.

  • @dabrixtonbomba You're an angry fucking pussy because Ali destroyed your beloved Cooper years ago. I go by what I see bitch. I don't need someone else forming my opinions for me. Fuck you and your fat ass mother. Motherfuckers like you can't have civilized conversations with people. All you understand is insults. Fortunately for you I'm good at dishing it out. You started with the insults, I finish it. So long you fucking loser. I win you lose. You're all alone in your pathetic little world

  • Cooper was a cunt! Who said I love him? LOL "Fuck you and your fat ass mother. Motherfuckers like you can't have civilized conversations with people" that's the single most stupid statement I have ever heard, but damned funny! Have you ever thought of being a comedian? Just get on stage and try to be serious, you'll have 'em rolling!

  • "All you understand is insults. Fortunately for you I'm good at dishing it out. Fuck you and your fat ass mother." Hahahahahhaha...what a tool you are! Hehehehe...

  • @dabrixtonbomba Again, you lose............

  • Comment removed

  • Despite the fact that the evidence below all points to you getting your ass kicked? Once again, YOU lose. HAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • You can't just say "you lose" when I have been systematically proving you wrong and kicking your sorry ass for the last couple of hours! It just doesn't work that way. Show me where I lost? Oh and I'm still waiting for this vast list of experts. LOLOLOL

  • Clay-Banks---------------why the ref took that oddball action after the 3rd round? And why the fight was stopped? Banks was not in danger at that point--the round had barely started.

    Great upload! Thank you!!

  • @lumpagogo I think it was a good stoppage. What you miss in this footage ( because there's a funny edit where a few seconds are missing) is Ali landed some good shots before the hook landed. The ref was already prepared to stop the fight because of the previous round. Was probably just looking for an excuse to stop it at that point and that left hook was as good as any. Look at Sonny's legs when the ref steps in. His legs were gone and the fight would have ended with Sonny on his back

  • Clay-Ali fans always see things his way. Some of us take a second look--Banks proved he wasn't hurt and the crowd saw the same thing. Ref Ruby Goldstein then reffed another match: Griffith-Paret, III. Clearly, we are citing life-and-death incompetence as well as inconsistency.

  • @lumpagogo OK, actually motherfucker I see it MY way. I don't have to rely on other people's opinions. When I responded I didn't insult you so I don't appreciate your idiotic assumption that just because I'm a fan of Ali I can't make up my own mind. FYI, I've never heard Ali's opinion on the matter. I can see from this clip how hurt Banks was you fucking idiot. And the crowd hardly ever wants a fight stopped. The crowd WANT'S blood you idiot. Now go suck you fat ass mother's dick bitch...

  • Comment removed

  • @lumpagogo lololo. you're an idiot.

  • Comment removed

  • @lumpagogo drop dead..........

  • I agree--he was geting beat but he could have cont'd

  • true dat.

  • Ali truly is the greatest heavyweight ever.....heavyweight boxing sucks now but even after ali very few heavyweights had the slickness and elusiveness that he had.

  • Was that the same elusiveness that saw him decked by Henry Cooper? lol

  • Good point but he still whooped Coopers ass.....twice lol. Elusiveness doesn't always mean you're guaranteed not to get hit.

  • and get up pissed off and dominate the rest of the fight

  • Not through elusiveness though! He dominated the rest of the fight cos he was fortunate he had Henry 'the bum' Cooper as an opponent.

  • Neat.
